The Top 10 Best Real-Time Tactics (RTT) Games To Play In 2025

What Makes A Great Real-Time Tactics Game in 2025?

Recently, a reader asked me to create a list of the ten best real-time tactics games for 2025. It struck me that, even though I love this type of game, I’d never actually written about it. So, I started by thinking about what exactly defines a real-time tactics (RTT) game and how it differs from a real-time strategy (RTS) game. The key difference, as I see it, is that RTT games downplay or completely remove base-building and resource gathering. This allows players to focus entirely on controlling their units in battle, often with a small number of squads or characters. The best RTT games in 2025 will master the art of small-unit tactics, offer challenging gameplay, and provide plenty of strategic options while keeping the unit count manageable.

I’ve put together a list of 10 real-time tactics (RTT) games that I think are great, based on my experience with the genre. I’ve also chosen games that frequently go on sale, especially on Steam and other online stores. Consider this your guide for finding some good RTT deals during the Steam Winter Sale in 2025.

10 – Partisans 1941

Partisans 1941 is an engaging real-time tactics game set during World War II on the Eastern Front. You take command of a small group of Soviet fighters who are using guerrilla warfare to battle the German occupation. Gameplay is similar to classic ‘Commandos’ games, emphasizing stealth, ambushes, and careful planning. It adds new features, like a pause system that lets you coordinate the special skills of each squad member – whether it’s silent takedowns or sniping from a distance.

What makes Partisans 1941 unique is the base-building aspect between missions. Players need to gather resources, create useful items, and assign tasks to partisans who aren’t currently on missions. This is vital for keeping your resistance group alive and prepared for battle, and it adds a lot of strategic thinking to the already challenging combat.

9 – Broken Arrow

Okay, so Broken Arrow had a rough start, but honestly, as of 2025, it’s the best large-scale modern military tactics game out there, in my opinion. The campaign is seriously good – you get to command both the US and Russian forces in intense battles around the Baltic Sea. It’s a fantastic way to learn the ropes, too, if you want to jump into multiplayer. It definitely takes cues from games like Wargame and WARNO, but what I really like is that there’s no base building during battles or resource collecting. Instead, you spend a lot of time building and tweaking your ‘Battlegroup’ – a deck of over 300 super-detailed land, air, and sea units, and you can customize everything from their loadouts to the type of ammo they use. It’s all about experimenting and finding what works!

Broken Arrow focuses on realistic, combined military tactics. Winning requires carefully positioning your units, using scouts to maintain visibility, and coordinating different types of forces – like tanks, artillery, and aircraft. You’ll also need to strategically spend earned points to call in reinforcements. As a modern combat game, Broken Arrow features more powerful and accurate weapons than older war games set during the Cold War.

8 – Last Train Home

Last Train Home stands out as a strategy game with a truly unique and fascinating setting. It places you in command of the Czechoslovak Legion, soldiers trying to return home after World War I, traveling aboard an armored train through the chaos of the Russian Civil War. The game expertly mixes large-scale strategy with intense, tactical combat. You’ll manage your train – assigning roles to your soldiers, gathering resources, and keeping morale high on a strategic map – and then lead small squads into dangerous missions to find supplies or battle opposing forces. What makes it even better is that the game is based on a true, little-known story, and it’s been a hit with players, earning an 87% rating on Steam.
