Be warned! This article reveals key plot details and endings for several games, including Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Metal Gear Solid 2, BioShock, Halo 2, Silent Hill 2, Spec Ops: The Line, and Assassin’s Creed 3.
Despite a good score of 83 on OpenCritic, many consider Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic to be the best Star Wars video game ever created, and one of the greatest Western RPGs of all time. Originally released for the original Xbox in July 2003, this game brought George Lucas’s Star Wars universe to life with more detail and visual appeal than any previous game in the franchise.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I still think about Knights of the Old Republic all the time, even 22 years later! What really made it special was how well-developed and interesting all the characters were, and the story just kept you hooked. It really felt like being in that Star Wars galaxy – exciting, but with a sense of danger. But honestly, everyone remembers that incredible plot twist – it’s easily one of the best I’ve ever experienced on Xbox!
The Story Leading Up To Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s Big Plot Twist
If you haven’t experienced BioWare’s classic 2003 game, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, you play as a character you create, who starts the game with amnesia in the middle of a spaceship battle above the planet Taris. The story takes place 4,000 years before the original Star Wars: A New Hope, during a fierce war between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire, which is commanded by Darth Malak.
In the first half of the game, players gather a team of characters to help them find ancient Star Maps. The Jedi Council believes these maps point to the Star Forge, a powerful weapon. Throughout their journey, the player is troubled by visions of Darth Malak and his former master, Darth Revan, who was presumed dead after being betrayed by Malak.
Why Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s Plot Twist Is The Hardest-Hitting On Xbox
After collecting three Star Maps and while traveling to find the fourth, the player’s group is captured by Darth Malak and taken prisoner on his ship, the Leviathan. Malak then reveals a shocking truth: the player character is actually Darth Revan, who somehow survived an assassination attempt. The Jedi Council secretly erased Revan’s memories, hoping he would unknowingly lead them to the powerful Star Forge. Bastila Shan, a close ally and Jedi Knight, confirms this revelation before bravely sacrificing herself to allow the party to escape.
What makes the plot twist in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic so clever is its complexity. While the reveal that the player character is actually the main villain is a huge surprise, the game subtly hints at it throughout the story. This makes the twist feel earned and satisfying for players who pay attention to the details in the dialogue and background lore.
The plot twist in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is more than just a surprising moment. Once players escape Darth Malak’s ship, the full impact of the twist hits hard. Their companions, who previously trusted them completely, immediately express their fear and worry about having unknowingly served an aggressive Sith Lord. Players are also deeply connected to Revan’s perspective, experiencing the revelation alongside them and having to respond instantly to their companions’ questions and accusations.
The big twist in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic continues to resonate even after players have developed relationships with their companions. It fundamentally changes how players see their own character and the choices they’ve been making. For example, players embracing the Dark Side might interpret the twist as proof they are fulfilling Revan’s true purpose, while those on the Light Side path could see it as a chance for Revan to find redemption. No matter how players react, the Revan reveal is one of the most impactful twists in gaming history, influencing almost everything that happens afterward.
If the troubled remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic actually comes out, people will likely spend a lot of time talking about how it handles the famous plot twist and whether it delivers a satisfying conclusion.
Other Great Plot Twists on Xbox
While Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is famous for its shocking twist, it’s not the only Xbox game with a surprising story reveal focused on the player. Here are a few other Xbox games that feature memorable plot twists centered around your character:
- Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty — Raiden is the main playable character, not Snake
- Halo 2 — The Arbiter is a secondary playable character and the Prophets turn on the Elites, leading to a Covenant civil war
- Silent Hill 2 — The player-character is responsible for the death of his wife, and the monsters of Silent Hill are manifestations of his grief
- BioShock — The player-character has been brainwashed and controlled throughout the game
- Spec Ops: The Line — The main villain was actually a hallucination brought on by the player-character’s PTSD
- Assassin’s Creed 3 — The first playable character is actually a member of the Templar Order
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s Plot Twist Has Set An Incredibly High Bar for Future Games
Over the past forty years, very few Star Wars games have offered truly unique plot twists, and even fewer have executed them well. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a notable exception. The game centers around Cal Kestis’s journey with Bode Akuna, a mercenary who assists him in locating the secret planet of Tanalorr. Once they arrive, Bode unexpectedly betrays Cal, killing Master Cordova and revealing his own history: he’s a former Jedi, a survivor of Order 66, who was compelled to work as an Imperial spy.
The plot twist in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is surprising and creates a dramatic, personal finish to the game. However, it doesn’t quite reach the level of impact set by Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic over two decades ago.
The plot twist in Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) remains the most impactful in Star Wars gaming, and even with the original director of KOTOR involved, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic would struggle to create something as surprising or lasting. While the planned KOTOR Remake and potential future of FOTOR could eventually surpass Revan’s story, KOTOR still stands out as a game worth revisiting time and time again.
