As a follower of global market trends, I recently learned that Tencent Holdings Ltd., a company I’ve long admired, has been added to a blacklist by the United States. This list identifies firms with connections to China’s military. The news was initially shared by Bloomberg, and as it spread online, there was a noticeable dip in Tencent’s share price. Interestingly, another tech giant, CATL, which has ties with Tesla, also found itself on this list.
As a passionate gamer, I’m part of a global gaming community that’s connected by none other than Tencent, China’s leading tech giant. This powerhouse has its fingers on the pulse of some heavyweight game developers like Epic Games, Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, Riot Games, and SuperCell. It’s pretty awesome to think that I could be playing games from these giants, all while being part of Tencent’s ever-expanding gaming universe!
Pentagon Warning
As a gamer, I’ve come across a list, known as the ‘blacklist’, which is supported by the Pentagon. This list flags companies that have close ties to China’s military or its defense industry. According to a recent report by Bloomberg, this list exists and provides such information.
It’s uncertain if either of these companies frequently interact with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). However, U.S. authorities have hinted at regulations in China that may compel businesses to disclose sensitive information related to national security to Beijing.
1. The market value of Tencent’s stocks dropped significantly when the Pentagon’s announcement was made public. This was later confirmed by statements issued by Tencent’s representatives.
2. The price of Tencent’s shares plummeted upon the release of the Pentagon’s statement, and this was subsequently verified by comments from Tencent’s officials.

According to the BBC’s report, it was implied that the Pentagon may have faced pressure to expand its blacklist and include more Chinese businesses, resulting in CATL, a firm contributing to electric vehicle production, being added to the list.
Over the years, numerous companies have contested the Pentagon’s decisions about being included in this infamous blacklist. For example, DJI and Hesai Technologies even took legal action against the intelligence agency, but as of now, they both still appear on the list. However, in 2021, Xiaomi managed to secure a successful appeal to be taken off the blacklist.
The Department of Defense’s list now includes an impressive 134 Chinese firms, with the count continuing to rise.
