For quite a few years now, the series Vikings has been captivating audiences with top-notch television production, accompanied by remarkably deep and nuanced characters that have given rise to some truly impressive performances. Packed with suspense, action, and mystery, this show has kept viewers enthralled since its debut.
Although the show has certainly made creative changes in depicting Ragnar Lothbrok’s life historically, there’s no arguing that it accurately reflects the violence and harshness common during this turbulent era. As Season 6 brings a bloody end, let’s reminisce about the most formidable warriors who fought throughout the series.
14. Jarl Borg
Battle-Tested
In the series Vikings, this resilient and tenacious character named Jarl Borg made an early appearance as one of Ragnar’s formidable adversaries. He constantly posed problems for Lothbrok and King Horik. Despite his brief screen time spanning only two seasons, he left a lasting impression – from his initial introduction to his grim, unforgettable conclusion. From the outset, Jarl Borg displayed his strength, cunning (not to mention his strong-willed nature).
He skillfully leads numerous warriors, cleverly turns Rollo against Ragnar, and remains unyielding in his stance, even as both Ragnar and the Danish king request he surrender his claim over contested territories. He puts up a strong resistance and shows himself to be an experienced, shrewd combatant — however, the choices he made during his short-lived television appearance are likely to have significant consequences for him in the future.
13. Astrid
Has Overcome Many Trials And Hardships
Astrid is a resilient warrior-woman, demonstrating unwavering loyalty and friendship towards Lagertha, while also embodying self-reliance. Her life is marked by numerous hardships, sorrow, and mistreatment that ultimately lead to her sad demise in season 5. She battles valiantly alongside Lagertha, vanquishing Egil “The Bastard” and the earl’s son.
Astrid endures a great deal of physical and emotional hardship. She’s separated from her comrade Lagertha and is compelled to marry King Harald, who also subjects her to brutal rape by his men. Despite the pain and turmoil she experiences, she maintains her resilience and defiance, choosing her own fate. Astrid is a character in this series that is often overlooked despite being rich and complex, and she deserved better treatment.
12. Aethelwulf
A Hardened Wessex King
Despite not possessing the craftiness and might of his late father, King Ecbert of Wessex, Aethelwulf consistently works behind the scenes to establish his own domain of power and virtue. Though he often falls short in comparison to characters like Ragnar, Ivar, Athelstan, or his father who often work against him, Aethelwulf remains steadfast and resolute.
He isn’t shy about rolling up his sleeves and diving headfirst into conflicts, even if it means getting messy. In doing so, he manages to secure some impressive victories against adversaries who appear to be no match for him. This tough, battle-seasoned individual is steadfast in his commitment to being a virtuous man, devoted to his family and community – though at times he justifies questionable actions under the guise of religious belief. Yet, his journey to becoming a king is challenging and intriguing, making for an engaging character study.
11. Halfdan “The Black”
Overshadowed, But Not To Be Overlooked
This younger sibling of Harald, who is known for his aggressive nature, has experienced some lessons in being overshadowed. Despite his active participation in battles and travels, activities he seems to relish, he never attains the same prestige or recognition as his brother, who eventually became a king.
This individual is swift and powerful in battle, boasting numerous victories, fueled by his untamed spirit and passion for combat. He describes engaging his adversaries as something that invigorates him, making him “feel truly alive.” As the story unfolds on Vikings, he undergoes a slight transformation towards introspection, bordering on contemplation. However, he remains authentically Viking; a man who can be unsettlingly brutal, erratic, and unpredictable at times.
10. Hvitserk
Conflicted, Non-Confrontational — But A Survivor
Although Hvitserk didn’t learn his combat skills from Ragnar, he demonstrates himself to be an extremely aggressive and savage warrior, especially in the later seasons of the show. Lacking proficiency in swordplay, he compensates with an intense appetite for violence and a terrifying thirst for blood.
In one-on-one battles, Hvitserk demonstrates exceptional warrior skills, matching the raw strength and unyielding aggression of Athelwulf. Similar to Ivar, there’s a cruel and bloodthirsty side to Hvitserk that often surfaces during battle, propelling him forward through enemy lines.
9. Ubbe
The Viking Diplomat
Undeniably, Ubbe possesses a tender heart, showing immense affection towards his loved ones and displaying sincere care for the well-being of others in his vicinity. Yet, on the battlefield, Ubbe transforms into an entirely distinct entity.
Despite being underestimated following his defeat by Heahmund and the loss of the Great Army to Ivar, Ubbe remains a formidable combatant. Drawing on the warrior training bestowed upon him by the legendary Ragnar, he employs a formidable blend of strength and shrewdness against his adversaries.
8. Heahmund
Loyal, Fierce, And Passionate
Although he was less prominent towards the end of the series, Bishop Heahmund remains an exceptionally skilled fighter. Fueled by his strong Christian beliefs and intense dislike for paganism, Heahmund wields sword and shield with brutal efficiency.
During the initial skirmish of the civil conflict, Heahmund confidently positions himself on the front lines, effortlessly felling adversaries. Impressing even the relentless Ivar with his combat skills, Heahmund further demonstrated his warrior capabilities by besting Ubbe in battle – a feat not often achieved.
7. Floki
Strength Through Sharpness — And Trickery
As a movie enthusiast, let me tell you that although I’m known as a shipwright, Floki is more than just a builder – he’s an exceptional warrior too. With his unique charm, quick wit, and infectious laugh, he’s definitely one of my favorite characters. However, don’t underestimate his prowess in battle; it’s something to be respected.
Despite not having the bulky build of Rollo or Bjorn, Floki’s intelligence and guile enable him to overcome his adversaries. With a characteristic slithering agility, Floki’s axe-wielding skills are remarkably precise, making him a formidable figure on the battlefield. He serves as a powerful testament that strength is not the only factor determining victories.
6. Harald “Finehair”
Charismatic, Unwavering (And Often Stubborn)
Harald shows a multi-layered character development within the “Vikings” TV show, making him an engaging adversary. His strength on the battlefield doesn’t stem from strategic thinking or keen intelligence, but rather from his raw aggression and savagery.
Driven by an intense determination, Harald never gives up on achieving his objectives, and those who obstruct him risk facing his wrath. In combat, he proves to be a fierce and lethal fighter, seemingly enjoying each life he ends. There’s no questioning Harald’s warrior abilities, and his dream of becoming king remains steadfast.
5. Ivar The Boneless
A Wild Warrior Who Overcomes Hardship — Much To The Detriment Of His Enemies
Ivar is a clever and ruthless warrior, overcoming any obstacles, including his physical limitations, to accomplish his objectives. Just like his father, Ivar employs his intellect to great destruction during conflicts, consistently outsmarting and outmaneuvering his adversaries.
Anyone caught by him is promptly dealt with in a ruthless manner, mirroring his ferocity while charging into combat on his chariot. He is an awe-inspiring figure on the battlefield, capable of holding entire armies at bay through the intensity of his fury and the might of his roar.
4. Lagertha
Loyal Companion Of Rangar Turned Powerful, Independent Shield-Maiden
Lagertha, without doubt, is an exceptionally skilled and powerful shield-maiden. Sadly, some of her male peers mistakenly undervalued her abilities, which often led to their tragic end.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but admire Lagertha’s portrayal from start to finish. Her character embodies more than just warrior prowess; she stands tall as a powerful and insightful leader. Fearless in defending her home and loved ones, she wields an intelligence that outsmarts even the physically superior adversaries.
3. Ragnar Lothbrok
A Viking Legend In His Own Time
In the realm of warriors, I stand as a testament to timeless tales – a man like Ragnar, whose valor knows no bounds, both on the battlefield and beyond its edge. A formidable force, I am relentless in combat, leaving no foe unconquered. My deeds reverberate through the annals of time.
Prior to the conflict, his strategic genius was evident. A master tactician, he combined his intellectual acumen with his combat skills to secure numerous impressive triumphs. Moreover, his gaze could send chills down the spines of the most seasoned soldiers.
2. Bjorn
Bearing The Torch Of Ragnar’s Legacy
Despite the challenge of living up to Ragnar’s impressive fatherly reputation, Bjorn didn’t let himself be overshadowed. Instead, he found inspiration in his father’s legacy and strived to create his own distinguished identity. In combat, Bjorn was a formidable force, laying low countless enemy warriors.
Beyond just that, Bjorn braved the frigid wilderness where he faced off against a bear in hand-to-hand combat and came out on top. In one-on-one battles, Bjorn remained unbeaten, displaying martial prowess that surpassed even his father’s. In the end, Bjorn earned the moniker of Ironside by withstanding Ivar’s sword and galloping onto the battlefield, causing Ivar’s troops to flee in fear.
1. Rollo
Capable Viking Turned Duke Of Normandy
Though Rollo may not be everyone’s preferred Viking, he was undeniably formidable in combat. His physical strength and mastery with weapons like swords, axes, and shields were unrivaled, complemented by his valiant and bloodthirsty spirit. In the heat of battle, Rollo would charge into fray clad only in a pair of tough leather pants. Indeed, there’s no mistaking that Rollo embodies the very essence of a Viking warrior.
Amongst all warriors on “Vikings”, it’s Rollo who stands out as the one with the most kills, earning him the title of the deadliest warrior. His ferocity and aggression were unparalleled. While Bjorn was indeed formidable in battle, Rollo was a league above – instilling terror not just on the battlefield, but behind enemy shield walls throughout his life.
