As a longtime fan of Dragon Ball, I must say that the series has always been known for its action-packed battles and over-the-top characters. However, there are some episodes that stand out as truly unique and entertaining in their own right, and these are my top picks for the most memorable filler episodes in both Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super.
Dragon Ball is overflowing with unforgettable scenes that keep its fans captivated. This popular shonen series showcases unforgettable characters, formidable adversaries, breathtaking battles, and jaw-dropping transformations that leave viewers on tenterhooks.
The fact that the filler of Dragon Ball has become iconic in its own right is a testament to the sheer amount of love fans have for Goku and his friends. Some of the weirdest Dragon Ball episodes end up being oddly endearing, even though these episodes contribute nothing to the forward movement of the main plot.
8. Princess Snake
A Massive Snake In Her Human Form Falls For Goku
- Episode Number: 8 (Dragon Ball Z)
- Original Air Date: August 2, 1989
In the anime, the trek Goku takes along Snake Way is so extensive that viewers honestly thought this intricate route took just as long as the series portrayed. During his travels, the Saiyan met numerous distinctive individuals, among them being the legendary Princess Snake.
In a nutshell, this captivating princess has developed an affection for Goku, often overfeeding him, followed by a proposal of marriage. Yet, he is already committed to Chi-Chi and declines, causing Princess Snake’s anger which leads her to transform into a massive snake in an attempt to thwart the Saiyan. In a predicament after consuming so much food, Goku chooses politeness over brute force by tying up the snake instead of using a Kamehameha, eventually departing.
7. Vegeta Disappears?! Menace Of The Duplicate Vegeta!
Copy Vegeta Makes An Appearance
- Episode Number: 45 (Dragon Ball Super)
- Original Air Date: May 29, 2016
The “Copy Vegeta” storyline is quite unusual within the Dragon Ball series. Yet, it offered Brian Drummond an opportunity to recapture the allure of the Ocean dub by exchanging heated dialogue with Christopher Sabat, who voices Vegeta in Funimation’s official production.
In essence, the fight between fake Vegeta and Goku dominates the episode, but ultimately leads to the elimination of the fraudulent character permanently. Quickly afterward, Vegeta recovers his powers and the Z-Warriors promptly shift their focus to new endeavors.
6. Gohan’s Plight! The Preposterous Great Saiyaman Film Adaptation?!
Marks The Return Of The Great Saiyaman
- Episode Number: 73 (Dragon Ball Super)
- Original Air Date: January 8, 2017
In Dragon Ball Z, there was an unusual period known as The Great Saiyaman, which was briefly referenced in Super through a two-episode side story. In this scenario, Gohan and his family discover that their superhero is being portrayed in a film. However, the actor playing him becomes irate when Videl publicly reprimands him in front of everyone.
In the film, the famous actor attempts to embarrass Gohan by casting him as a stuntman, yet this backfires because Gohan effortlessly handles these stunts without much difficulty. As Jaco and his alien captive arrive in the storyline of Dragon Ball Super, events begin to take on a more standard course. However, this peculiar production environment adds an endearing quirkiness that appeals to certain fans.
5. Who’s Who?!
The Heroes Find Out They’re On Fake Namek
- Episode Number: 31 (Dragon Ball Z)
- Original Air Date: September 27, 1997
Many viewers still remember a significant amount of filler content from the Dragon Ball Z series, such as the Fake Namek arc which, despite running longer than expected, was quite enjoyable for most fans. In this storyline, the trio composed of Bulma, Krillin, and Gohan arrive on what they believe to be the planet Namek, where they are warmly greeted by two local Namekians as well.
Here’s what transpires next: A search for counterfeit Dragon Balls ensues as the pair of look-alikes attempt to mislead Earthlings, giving them an opportunity to snatch their spacecraft. Once their trickery is exposed, they metamorphose, revealing their hideous pink shapes and engaging in a short-lived battle.
4. Goz And Mez
A Hilarious And Iconic Episode Where The World Hell Is Censored
- Episode Number: 7 (Dragon Ball Z)
- Original Air Date: July 26, 1989
The iconic series Dragon Ball Z has become so well-known that even something as seemingly minor as censorship has taken on an iconic status within it. For instance, during Goku’s journey across Snake Way, he dozes off and accidentally lands in what is humorously known as the Home for Infinite Losers, or HFIL.
Long-standing viewers are aware that this abbreviation was concocted as a sneaky means to replace “Hell” in a children’s program. In the episode, Goku breaks free from this location and returns to the beginning of Snake Way, managing to outsmart Goz and Mez along the way.
3. Gohan’s First Date
A Misunderstanding Leads To Gohan Being Forced Into Going Out On A Date
- Episode Number: 202 (Dragon Ball Z)
- Original Air Date: September 29, 1993
Whenever Gohan transforms into Great Saiyaman, he takes extraordinary measures to safeguard his hidden persona. However, when a girl insinuates she knows the Saiyan’s clandestine identity, Gohan is reluctantly drawn into an unfortunate date due to this revelation.
In a turn of events, Gohan becomes so engrossed in rescuing lives that he neglects his date, who angrily threatens to expose his hidden truth. However, when the secret is finally revealed, it turns out to be quite unexpected – Gohan’s secret is that he wears childish teddy bear underwear.
2. A Challenge From Champa! This Time, A Baseball Game!
Universe 6 And 7 Take Part In An Entertaining Baseball Match
- Episode Number: 70 (Dragon Ball Super)
- Original Air Date: December 11, 2016
For numerous Dragon Ball Super enthusiasts, the standout filler episode is undeniably the inter-universal baseball game, which turns out to be a thrilling affair. The reason being, everyone seems to enjoy themselves, and the fun multiplies when dramatic moments occur, with characters transforming to deliver spectacular home runs.
In this peculiar scene, Yamcha’s triumph, though accompanied by severe injury, is the most striking moment. His winning stance mirrors the position he was in when the Saibaman killed him earlier. This amusing reference to the past adds humor and reinforces Universe 7’s win in the competition.
1. Goku Vs. Arale! An Off-The-Wall Battle Spells The End Of The Earth?
A Gag Character Who Turns Out To Be Ridiculously Strong
- Episode Number: 69 (Dragon Ball Super)
- Original Air Date: December 4, 2016
Among Toriyama’s lesser-known creations is Arale, who charms viewers by breaking the fourth wall in Dragon Ball Super. Her powers are depicted as boundless due to the typical invincibility associated with comic relief characters.
Observing the scene, it’s quite surreal witnessing Vegeta striking Arale, only for her to spin off and land blows that cause significant harm back to him. It’s intriguing how, despite Goku transforming into a Super Saiyan Blue, he still encounters trouble against this peculiar character in Dragon Ball Super. This unexpected appearance of Arale certainly adds an unusual twist to the series.
