  • Season 3 finale shifts power balance, bold storytelling choices impress viewers.

After five weeks and seven installments, the third season of “The Wheel of Time” debuted its last episode on Prime Video, culminating in a deafening collision of destinies, decisions, and treacheries. As the prophetic strands enveloped Rand and his companions, long-standing allegiances were put to the test, while fresh partnerships were forged through trial by fire. The climax didn’t merely close a book—it significantly altered the power dynamics across the world.

In the second-to-last episode of Amazon’s The Wheel of Time series, Perrin and his companions successfully battled Trollocs, the Darkfriend Padan Fain, and demonstrated the harshness that can be found on a battlefield. However, it also emphasized that there remains hope in this world, and characters like Perrin and Loial play crucial roles. The final episode, however, presents surprising plot twists that are worth exploring, so let’s delve into what unfolded in the Season 3 finale of The Wheel of Time.

How was Siuan chosen to sit in the Amyrlin Seat?

The narrative opens with a 10-year-old memory in Tar Valon, where Elaida seeks backing from the White Ajahs for her bid to become Amyrlin Seat. As voting commenced, it appeared Siuan was on the verge of losing the election. Yet, the White Ajahs pledged their allegiance to Siuan, prompting other Ajahs to follow suit, resulting in a victory for Siuan. Fast-forward to the present day, Siuan endorses Dragon Reborn and urges fellow Aes Sedai to back her stance. Meanwhile, Elaida is actively working to gather support, propose a resolution against Siuan, and apprehend Dragon Reborn. Upon learning some Aes Sedai have departed from the tower, which could jeopardize her chances of winning the vote, Siuan instructs certain allies to track them down and return them to the tower.

Rand al’Thor finally knows Lanfear’s true identity and her plans

In the interim, Moiraine interrogates Sammael, a captive they’ve taken, regarding his past deeds. She informs him that he will instruct Rand on military tactics; if he refuses, Moiraine threatens to bury him underground, ensuring his name is lost in the tales of the final battle. Meanwhile, Rand encounters Lanfear in his dreams and discusses the surprise she’d sent for him. She inquires about his choice of location, to which he replies that it was the site where their world collided, and Lanfear had released the Dark One. He also mentions that this was the last moment when she was fully human. Lanfear admits that she’s been strengthening Egwene, and when Rand questions her loyalty to the Dark One, she reveals that at the time, she supported him because she saw no other choice.

In my review as a movie critic, I’d say that in this scene, the Last Dragon Reborn, or Rand, made it clear he was parting ways with Lanfear for the very same reasons he is leaving her now. He had come to understand her true, monstrous nature, and found it unacceptable. As he pushed her away, Egwene appeared in his dream, helping to fully expel Lanfear. Both Rand and Egwene were discovered to have been dreamwalking. Upon returning to reality, they remained vigilant, anticipating Lanfear’s pursuit. However, Moiraine cautioned them not to underestimate her, as she might strike again. True enough, Lanfear did resurface, but rather than confronting Rand and Egwene, she sought out Melindhra to settle an old debt.

Liandrin gets the second bracelet, while Nynaeve and the team look out for the collar

Liandrin’s followers have come to realize that she was responsible for Naomi’s death. Liandrin claims she acted in self-defense, as Naomi had attempted to confront her. Simultaneously, Moghedien encounters Liandrin and returns the bracelet she had taken from Elayne and Nynaeve. What she lacked was a collar, and she promptly set out to acquire it. With swift determination, they sought refuge in a building to find the coveted collar.

Instead, it’s Nynaeve, Min, Mat, and Elayne who find themselves inside a building seeking the collar, arriving after Liandrin and the other Black Ajahs. Inside, Elyane and Thom are on the hunt for the collar when Thom reminds her of their past acquaintance. In the midst of their chat, Elayne inquires if he departed just before Gabriel graced their kingdom. Thom expresses ignorance about Gabriel, stating that he had maintained a vigil over the court for years, and would have been informed if Gabriel entered as a consort. However, their discussion is interrupted by a confrontation with one of the Black Ajahs, at which point Thom warns Elayne about his mother’s safety, revealing that Gabriel is not a trustworthy individual. He emphasizes that whatever memories Elayne recalls are mere suggestions from him. Despite being advised to retreat, Elayne reenters the fray to aid Thom and eliminate the Black Ajah.

Liandrin was persistently searching for the collar, yet it was becoming increasingly frustrating. However, it appears that Nynaeve has managed to secure the collar and kept it in her purse. The two women crossed paths at the entrance of the building, but despite Nynaeve’s attempt to dissuade Liandrin from doing something wicked, Liandrin harnessed her powers to snatch the bag from Nynaeve, shackle her, and toss her into the sea. Yet, with a precise control over her powers, Nynaeve freed herself from the chains and emerged from the water.

In another location, Mat is transported to a different realm upon stepping through a puzzling portal and encounters Eelfinn who inquires about his requirements. Throughout the discussion, Eelfinn persistently queries Mat’s needs. Mat requests that Eelfinn mend him. With an expression of satisfaction on his face, Eelfinn says “achieved” before asking Mat about his final request. His ultimate wish was to depart from this realm and resume his search for the collar in the structure where they had been searching. Before releasing him, Eelfinn informs him about the cost associated with all the favors he had bestowed. Upon returning to the building, a rope was found around Mat’

‘s neck, identical to what Min foresaw. Although it seemed as though Mat had perished, Min successfully revived him. Nevertheless, Mat reveals that his mind is now liberated from any terrifying nightmares or visions, but he remains puzzled about the strange occurrences transpiring around him.

Siuan’s reign is in danger as Elaida proves to be more influential, while Rand gets ready for the trial

In their conversation, Rand queries Moiraine about the recent events he’s experienced over the past few days or weeks. Eventually, Moiraine discloses that she collaborated with Lanfear to establish obstacles, so they could assess if Rand has mastered his powers. She also acknowledges this test serves a beneficial purpose since it allows them to assemble an army for the impending battle. Grateful for her help throughout this period, Rand prepares himself for the upcoming trial.

Concurrently, a search team arrives at the forest and encounters the remaining members of the Red Ajah seated on the ground. Upon being instructed to return to the tower, the Red Ajahs assert that the Amyrlin Seat could prevent them from fulfilling their obligations. When asked about their responsibilities, the Red Ajahs respond, “to bar your entry into the tower,” implying this was orchestrated by Elaida. Meanwhile, it’s time for Rand’s trial, and Moiraine is maintaining a watchful distance to keep Lanfear at bay. If Lanfear appears, she must engage in combat with Moiraine before causing any mischief.

The final episode of “The Wheel of Time” Season 3 was an impressive blend of compelling storytelling, stunning visuals, and thrilling action. While certain scenes could spark debate among viewers, the series’ portrayal of these moments is truly remarkable. From intense character interactions to grand-scale conflicts, the finale managed to maintain its epic scope while delivering emotional depth. Outstanding performances by Rosamund Pike, Sophie Okonedo, and Josha Stradowski added a raw intensity that held everything together amidst the chaos. Although not every plot twist will satisfy die-hard book fans, the show’s brave decisions demonstrate a clear sense of creative direction. It’s a finale that invites viewers to question—and rewards those who stick with it till the end.

The Wheel of Time Season 3 is streaming exclusively on Prime Video.
