In an exciting turn of events, the critically acclaimed game The Witcher 3, initially released in May 2015, is set to collaborate with the highly praised indie title from 2024, Balatro. Over the years, The Witcher 3 has maintained its popularity, participating in multiple crossovers with other notable games such as Fortnite, Destiny 2, and Cyberpunk 2077. It stands alongside gaming giants like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Last of Us Part 2 as one of the most award-winning games ever made.
Crossovers have helped maintain the popularity of older games, as they incorporate classic intellectual properties in downloadable content and updates for titles such as Fortnite, Dead by Daylight, and Minecraft. For instance, the character Geralt from The Witcher series appeared as a skin in Fortnite in 2023, alongside Ciri and Yennifer. However, not all crossovers are successful, like the recent collaboration between Fallout and Fortnite that left players craving more immersive cross-game experiences.

At the August 27 Nintendo Indie World Showcase, a teaser unveiled an upcoming collaboration between Witcher 3 and the hit deckbuilding poker game, Balatro. This widely-played card game, having sold over two million copies to date, combines traditional card play with roguelike features. Balatro is one of the most acclaimed games of 2024 thus far, and additional crossovers featuring the poker title were also announced, such as those with Vampire Survivors, Dave the Diver, and Among Us. The upcoming expansion, titled “Friends of Jimbo,” is available free for all players who own the game.

This year at Gamescom, Dave the Diver unveiled its collaboration with Balatro. The indie game created by MINTROCKET received numerous positive reviews when it was released in 2023. In the trailer for their crossover, Balatro showcased some mechanics of the cooperative cards, demonstrating that certain Dave the Diver cards can slice through others. Additionally, cards from Vampire Survivors were hinted at, with Dracula and some in-game heroes making an appearance.
Since its release, players have been creative and have added extraordinary modifications to Balatro. Earlier this year, a Reddit user managed to integrate the classic first-person shooter, Doom, into Balatro, sharing their achievement. The game operates by displaying the traditional FPS behind various cards, all while being fully playable within Balatro. This is possible due to the relatively small size of Doom compared to Balatro. Other fans have humorously inquired if it’s feasible for the Reddit user to make Crysis work within the game as well.
