As a dedicated fan of The Witcher series, I’m thrilled to hear about Freya Allan’s transformation as Ciri in Season 4. Having followed the character’s development in both the games and books, I can appreciate the balance that Allan and the production team are striving for.

Production for “The Witcher” Season 4 is currently underway, marking a new phase for the series. Notably, Ciri, played by Freya Allan, is set for a major change once again.

In the upcoming fourth season of “The Witcher” on Netflix, fans may be less taken aback by Ciri’s altered appearance as actress Freya Allan has announced the change in advance. Unlike in Season 2 when her drastically different look initially raised speculation about a recast, this time the transformation is expected. Allan revealed that Ciri would sport new hairstyle and makeup for Season 4.

As a gamer, I had the opportunity to chat with Perri Nemiroff from Collider at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The talented actress behind Ciri in “The Witcher” Season 4, who is only 22 years old, shared some exciting insights about her noticeable transformation on set. With rumors swirling regarding her new hair, makeup, and costume, she confirmed these changes and revealed that they align closely with the character’s appearance in the game and books. She explained, “Fans will appreciate how my look in the show now parallels the game more closely. We wanted to strike a balance between staying true to the source material and bringing Ciri’s character to life on screen. I was deeply involved in the costume design process and was determined to create a look that would resonate with fans.”

Allan said:

As soon as I don the costume and the fresh hairstyle and makeup, it’s as if Ciri transforms into an entirely new person. The experience is utterly delightful. People have yet to witness her in this light, and I can hardly contain my excitement to share this new side of Ciri with them. It’s going to be a blast!

In the show’s second season, Ciri’s appearance noticeably varied from her portrayal in the first season, causing quite a stir among viewers. Some even suspected that a new actress had taken over the role due to the significant difference. A major factor contributing to this change was Ciri’s eyebrows – they were bleached in the initial season but left unaltered in Season 2. Allan, who reprised her role as Ciri, openly shared that she made this request herself, expressing concerns over potential damage to her eyebrows if they were bleached daily during filming.

She explained:

I made the comment, “I’m afraid I might be bald-browed if we get to film more seasons of The Witcher, as I’ll have to bleach them daily. Plus, the months spent wandering around with alien-like appearance were quite an experience! People would often stop me and ask where I was from, leaving me feeling like an otherworldly creature. But it was my decision. I concluded that the bleached eyebrows weren’t worth it and opted to go back to my natural look.”

The changes in Ciri’s appearance in The Witcher Season 4 are crucial as they find the balance between the character’s evolution in the books and games. Also, her transformation may be necessary because the third season marked a major shift in her character’s personality. In Season 3, Ciri used the forbidden fire magic to heal the wounded white unicorn she befriended in a barren desert, which only proved that her magical abilities were more advanced than a mortal mage. Also, Ciri made her first kill during a duel with the man who took her hostage before joining the group of young rogues known as the Rats. When she was asked for her name, she told them, “Call me Falka.”

Ciri may have given a false name to hide her true identity, as the entire continent was searching for her. Another explanation could be that she no longer recognized herself after taking a life. With all the hardships she had endured, killing someone might have made her feel like she was indistinguishable from Falka, a notorious Redanian princess and rebel leader infamous as “Bloody Falka.” Ciri’s journey in Season 3 revealed new facets of her character. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich also hinted that Ciri joining the Rats would showcase an unprecedented side of Ciri, offering viewers a fresh perspective.

The Witcher Season 4 is expected to premiere in 2025.
