The Xbox 360 Marketplace Is Officially Closed

As someone who grew up with the Xbox 360 as my go-to console during the mid-2000s, the news of the Xbox 360 Marketplace closing is bittersweet. I remember the excitement when the marketplace first launched, allowing us to purchase and download games, DLC, and other content directly from our consoles. It was a game changer back then, and it played a significant role in shaping my gaming experiences.

The Xbox 360 Marketplace is officially closed. It’s shut down. It’s gone for good.

Today is a long-awaited yet surreal day. For quite some time, we’ve known this moment would arrive, but now that it’s actually here, it feels hard to believe. We’re bidding farewell to almost two decades of gaming culture for the players. Saying goodbye to Xbox 360’s online console store, a significant platform during the mid-2000s when this system was the must-have console.

After nearly 19 years, it’s time to say goodbye to the Xbox 360 Marketplace. In just a few hours from now, this service will be coming to an end. I’ve enjoyed bringing you countless marketplace deals and updates throughout the years. Thank you for joining in the fun, playing by the rules, and filing your transactions with us.

But just because the marketplace is gone, that doesn’t mean playing on the 360 is gone with it.

The store for buying new games, DLC, and other content for your system is no longer available. The Microsoft Movies & TV app also no longer functions. However, you can still play any games you already own on the console. Online features like multiplayer will continue to work as well. You’ll be able to download and install any previously purchased content onto your system.

So at least that all still exists. But for how long?

I’ve been an avid gamer for over two decades now, and one console that holds a special place in my heart is the Xbox 360. I remember the excitement when Microsoft announced its release back in November 2005. At that time, it was a cutting-edge piece of technology with impressive graphics and innovative features.

It’s pretty sad to think about.
