Bringing the very first Animal Crossing game, originally released for GameCube, to Nintendo Switch Online could be tricky because of how the game tracks time internally. The game first came out in Japan on the Nintendo 64 in 2001, near the end of that system’s life. It was quickly brought to the GameCube that same year, and then released in North America in 2002. Though it wasn’t a huge hit right away, Animal Crossing eventually became one of Nintendo’s most popular and successful series.
As a huge Nintendo fan, I was so excited to see the Nintendo Switch 2 launch alongside a new app focused on GameCube games for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members! They’ve added titles like Chibi-Robo and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and it’s amazing because a lot of these games haven’t been available since they first came out. Honestly, the GameCube didn’t sell super well back in the day, so Nintendo Switch Online is letting a whole new generation – and even folks like me who missed out then – finally experience what we were missing!
Why the Original Animal Crossing Might be a Problem on Nintendo Switch 2
Players on Reddit have pointed out a potential issue with bringing the original Animal Crossing to Nintendo Switch Online. The game’s internal calendar is set to December 31, 2030. While the game will still be playable after that date, the in-game dates will no longer be correct. To make it work with future Nintendo systems, like a potential Switch 2, Nintendo would need to either update the game before adding it to the GameCube app, or release it as is. While Nintendo hasn’t typically made significant changes to games on Nintendo Switch Online, they usually strive for accuracy, so a patch seems more likely.
Honestly, I’m not holding my breath about seeing the GameCube version of Animal Crossing on the app. Nintendo doesn’t usually bring older games in the series to new platforms. The first Animal Crossing got a port from the N64 to the GameCube, but that’s been the only time they’ve ever done that. Usually, they just want you to buy the newest game, like New Leaf stayed exclusive to the 3DS. But hey, 2026 is the 25th anniversary of the series, so it would be awesome if they finally broke that pattern and gave us a classic!
Nintendo hasn’t said what’s next for the Animal Crossing series. While a Switch 2 version of Animal Crossing: New Horizons came out earlier this year with a large free update, it’s unclear when a brand new game might be released. Fans are hoping for more content for the current game, but Nintendo hasn’t commented on whether another update is planned.

Currently, only nine games are available through the GameCube app on Nintendo Switch Online. Many more popular titles haven’t been added yet, and fans are hoping Nintendo will expand the selection. Nintendo has surprised players with new game releases in the past, so we might see more GameCube classics appear unexpectedly in the coming months. There’s even a chance the original Animal Crossing could be added without any warning, so fans will have to stay tuned.
