The Fantastic Four: First Footsteps is one of the upcoming Marvel Studios productions, set to release in three months. This movie is helmed by director Matt Shakman, who gained recognition through “Wandavision.”
The action-packed superhero film boasts an impressive cast led by Pedro Pascal portraying Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm / Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm / Human Torch, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm / The Thing, Ralph Ineson as Galactus, Julia Garner as Silver Surfer, Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne, and Sarah Niles. Recently, they divulged more about their characters, suggesting a potential shift towards villainy.
The cast and director of “The Fantastic Four” recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the eagerly awaited Marvel Cinematic Universe flagship film. During this conversation, the actors provided additional insights into their characters, and Kirby expressed her eagerness to embody Sue, a character who undergoes some of the most intriguing transformations in the comics. Sue has evolved into a mother, leader, and a darker version of herself – Malice. In “The Fantastic Four First Steps,” we will delve into Sue’s pregnancy storyline, but Kirby also emphasized that her portrayal of Invisible Woman will highlight Sue’s complex side. She stated:
One aspect of Sue’s history that particularly captivated me is when she transforms into Malice, revealing her darker side. This transformation was so intriguing that I found myself deeply engrossed in this part of her life. Consequently, I made an effort to incorporate elements of Malice within her character, ensuring she wasn’t just portrayed as a typical, wholesome, or good-natured mother.
Kirby openly expressed her fascination with Sue’s unique persona. She found it intriguing how Sue managed to navigate her life while donning various roles. She acknowledged that Sue embodies a strong, resilient, and powerful figure, yet she is also a mother. Moreover, she admired their characters as they portray “genuine individuals in a dysfunctional family who quarrel, attempt to resolve issues, and occasionally make mistakes.” Introducing an element of Malice into Sue’s character would undoubtedly add depth. Not only does Malice represent Sue’s darker side, but it also symbolizes her hidden fears, hostility, and self-doubt.
It’s logical to incorporate Malice as a part of Sue’s personality, given her extensive history as a woman. Malice is essentially the manifestation of the intricacies and emotional strain Sue experiences in her roles as a superhero, mother, and wife. Malice embodies Sue’s pain and repressed feelings. As the sole female member on the team, she is often perceived as the weakest and most passive. She frequently acts as a peacemaker between Reed, Johnny, and Ben. Sue finds herself at the bottom of the hierarchy in a team dominated by men. This is mirrored in her experiences as a mother, where she must always consider her children’s needs. For much of her life, Sue has had to put others first, leading to accumulated emotions. This vulnerability makes her an appealing target for Psycho-Man, who heightens and manipulates emotions in the comics.
In the upcoming film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” it’s uncertain if Psycho-Man will make an appearance, as Galactus is the main antagonist. However, given Sue Storm’s complex situation in the story, there’s a chance that Kirby might explore her darker side. Everyone has a dark aspect to their personality, but some people can keep it under control while others struggle and eventually lose it. Being a mother is demanding enough, but when you add the responsibility of protecting Earth from alien threats and cosmic beings, it becomes even more challenging. The details that Kirby revealed about Sue Storm’s character in the Fantastic Four series have made her one of the most intriguing characters for fans to watch in the movie.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps will hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
