So far, I’ve had limited time with Avowed, Obsidian’s RPG/fish-person-friend simulator. However, I’m finding it quite engaging. Unfortunately, I’ve encountered occasional frame rate drops and a certain jitteriness, which Nick pointed out in his performance assessment.
As a gamer, I stumbled upon an easy trick to activate FSR 3 frame generation, which has significantly boosted my frame rate by more than double. Yet, there’s a significant catch: this enhancement comes at the cost of one notable compromise.

After a swift internet search late at night, I stumbled upon a Reddit post by user Hawkiinz who shared a straightforward method for activating FSR 3 frame generation using a basic engine.ini adjustment. To implement this, locate the file in your Windows user folder, open it with Notepad, add a new line, save the changes, and voila! Your game will run with more frames thanks to the activated FSR.
In the discussion above, the initial mention is about the Steam edition; however, as you continue reading, you’ll discover a slightly adjusted approach that also makes this feature compatible with the Microsoft Game Pass version.
On my computer, I’ve found success using this method with the Game Pass edition, and it seems to be working flawlessly for me. However, everyone’s experience might not be identical, so do keep that in mind.
With my RX 7800 XT graphics card, I experience a significant boost in frame rates, jumping from 60-80 FPS at 1440p with High and Epic settings (and ray tracing activated) to an impressive 150-170 FPS, especially in challenging zones.
Additionally, it eliminates the minor issue of frame dips, particularly in high-geometry areas of the map, transforming the game from sporadically choppy to a truly smooth play experience for both Nick and myself.
The issue? Waterfalls may appear unattractive from certain distances. Although regular bodies of water appear pleasant (Avowed’s water appears somewhat generic even in what is otherwise an impressive showcase of Unreal Engine 5’s capabilities), waterfalls can occasionally display a pattern known as checkerboarding when frame generation is enabled. At times, it’s barely perceptible; at others, it’s quite evident, as seen below:
The problem? Waterfalls might seem less appealing from certain vantages. While regular water bodies still look nice (the water in Avowed seems generic even in what is otherwise a stunning demonstration of Unreal Engine 5’s capabilities), waterfalls can occasionally exhibit a pattern called checkerboarding when frame generation is activated. This pattern can sometimes be barely noticeable, while at other times it becomes quite obvious.)
To make things crystal clear, I’ve included an incredibly zoomed-in screenshot that highlights the point I’m trying to convey. After all, who doesn’t appreciate a little extra clarity now and then? So, here’s a small token of appreciation for PC gamers like us!
As a devoted fan, it seems like the grainy visuals might be the very reason why Frame Rate Smoothing (FSR) 3 is turned off initially. Yet, I’m more than willing to accept the occasional roughness in running water for the remarkable boost in frame rate this setting provides, and overall, I find the image quality quite commendable.
As a dedicated admirer, I’ve spotted two significant visual anomalies thus far: a minor instance of ‘ghosting’ when swiftly transitioning between weapons, and some ray tracing-related static on Adra stones. However, these imperfections are trivial and barely noticeable compared to the double the frame rate I’m experiencing. It seems like a fair tradeoff for this enhanced visual experience.
Additionally, you might want to experiment with adjusting the sharpness setting to make your visuals more defined. By default, it’s turned off, but I noticed a significant improvement when I increased it to around 20% at a resolution of upscaled 1440p. This enhancement of foliage appeared without causing any over-sharpened edges.
During my stay, if there’s anyone from Obsidian Entertainment who might be reading, I would like to kindly propose integrating FSR 3.1 into Avowed. This version usually performs significantly better in terms of minimizing ghosting and reducing noise compared to its predecessor. Although it doesn’t quite match DLSS in performance, I believe it could help rectify some issues that FSR might introduce, enhancing the already stunning visuals of this game.
Indeed, off to the Vital Terrains I’m heading. It seems there could be a bear problem of sorts, but now I’ll get to engage them in stunningly smooth combat action.
