Red Dead Redemption 2 boasts an incredibly detailed open world, but players aren’t actually able to explore much of it. The Mexico area is inaccessible without using mods or exploiting glitches, and the island of Guarma feels limited, offering only a brief experience tied to the main story. Fans are left wanting more from both locations.
A lot of players are eager to spend more time in Guarma, and for good reason – it’s a beautifully designed area in Red Dead Redemption 2. Some believe it may even have been used as a test environment for the tropical settings in GTA 6. Now, players can easily explore Guarma without many limitations, thanks to a surprisingly simple trick that works on both consoles and PCs.
How to Freely Explore Guarma in Red Dead 2
It’s a fairly straightforward trick. Players need to reach Guarma during the main story of Red Dead Redemption 2 and create a separate save file specifically while they’re on the island – they can use other save files for everything else. Once on Guarma, they should progress until the “A Kind and Benevolent Despot” mission (where the gang rescues Javier). During that mission, Dutch asks Arthur to wait outside. Instead of following instructions, players can simply leave the building, jump over a nearby rock, and escape the mission area.
A Reddit user named 22ARuncornAvenue recently found a trick that prevents you from automatically failing the mission in Guarma. After exploiting this glitch, you’re free to explore the entire island without any consequences, including being attacked. There’s even extra content to discover, and you can use the glitch to return to the main map of Red Dead Redemption 2. Enjoy!
Although this seems straightforward, it’s not really meant to work this way. You might experience some unexpected behavior in the game.
Why You Should Return to Red Dead Redemption 2’s Guarma in 2025/2026
While Red Dead 2 remains a beloved game, players are wondering if it’s still worth playing as we approach 2026. The main reason to revisit it now is GTA 6. Although its release in 2026 isn’t guaranteed, GTA 6 promises a lot, including a vibrant setting inspired by Vice City, Leonida, and Florida – a unique tropical and swampy environment. It’s likely that Rockstar used locations like Guarma in Red Dead 2 as a testing ground to perfect the details of this new world.
Fans have long speculated that the Guarma chapter in Red Dead Redemption 2 wasn’t just for the story. Many believe it was a way for Rockstar to test their game engine’s ability to handle tropical environments, even before they started seriously working on GTA 6. Guarma features a lush jungle, realistic water effects, and incredibly detailed plants – too much detail for a short section unless it served a double purpose. While Rockstar has never confirmed this, it’s likely Guarma allowed them to experiment with technology that we now see in the impressive graphics of GTA 6, given their dedication to quality and detail.
Ever since Red Dead 2 came out, everyone’s been obsessed with figuring out the secrets of Guarma. If you haven’t checked it out yet, or just want to see what the game can really do, this is a simple way to push RDR2 to its limits and explore everything it has to offer.
