A live-action movie adaptation of Elden Ring, directed by Alex Garland (of Ex Machina fame), is being developed in collaboration with film production company A24 and game publisher Bandai Namco. It’s unclear if the developers from From Software are part of the project, but George R.R. Martin, who co-created Elden Ring’s story and characters alongside Hidetaka Miyazaki (From Software’s boss), is serving as a producer. This information comes from Deadline.
Miyazaki has hinted at the possibility of an Elden Ring movie adaptation in the past, however, he’s made it clear that film-making isn’t something he’s familiar with. He told The Guardian last year, “I don’t see any reason to prevent another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, like a movie for instance. But I don’t think FromSoftware and myself possess the skills or resources to create something in a different medium. Therefore, a powerful collaborator would be necessary. We’d need to establish trust and agreement on our goals, but there is indeed interest.
As of now, there’s no information available about the plot, characters, or release date for the upcoming movie. It’s challenging to visualize a film that embodies the atmosphere of a From Software game, where the magic lies in being the sole force of change in a stationary, ruined world. However, I can suggest a couple of references for the mood board: David Lowery’s cinematic interpretation of The Green Knight and Matteo Garrone’s Tale of Tales trilogy. Maybe they could pay tribute to the soapstone design by inviting viewers to write “is this a dog?” on the movie posters at the box office, mimicking the functionality of the game.
You might not find out more for some time, but feel free to indulge yourself with Limgrave from Elden Ring Nightreign in the interim.
