There’s Still One Person Playing Concord on Steam

There's Still One Person Playing Concord on Steam

Key Takeaways

  • One player continues to play Concord on PC, despite the game’s servers being offline.
  • Even though Concord aimed to be the next Overwatch, it faced criticism for poor design and lack of innovation.
  • Despite a mixed reception, PlayStation says it is exploring options for the future of Concord.

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent on various titles under my belt, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of camaraderie for that one die-hard Concord player still clinging to their copy of the game. It’s not every day you come across someone who’s dedicated enough to keep an inoperative game running just because it brings them joy, or perhaps protest, I suppose.

One person is still playing Concord on PC via Steam, despite the controversial first-person hero shooter shutting its servers down on September 6. Even though Concord was a first-party PlayStation title, the game received mixed reviews from critics and only survived two weeks before being shut down.

The shooter game, which was recently removed from the market, was created by Firewalk Studios – a new studio under PlayStation’s wing. Initially intended to be similar to Overwatch, Concord faced numerous challenges, including its controversial release at an unfavorable time. Among other factors, players criticized the game for its unattractive character designs and lack of innovation in a saturated genre, contributing to its short-lived online presence lasting just two weeks before it was taken down.

Even though Concord is officially considered defunct, there seems to be a single user still running the game as indicated by SteamDB. At launch, the game only reached 697 simultaneous players, but according to this unofficial Steam database, there’s one active user with the game installed. Since the servers for the game are no longer functional, it appears that this individual may simply have the game running without actively playing it. It’s puzzling why someone would keep an inactive game running in their system.

Die-Hard Concord Fan Remains Online

Despite some critics being divided in their opinions about “Concord”, the game managed to keep a positive rating badge on Steam. Regrettably, low player numbers led to Sony removing the game from its platform and offering refunds only two weeks following its release. However, for those who were truly enjoying “Concord”, there’s a glimmer of hope as Sony mentioned they would consider possibilities for the game’s continuation. Although nothing is definitive yet, it seems that the studio plans to revisit their ideas for “Concord” before making any decisions about its future.

It seems that since the servers have been officially turned off, it’s possible this single player who is still connected might be expressing their discontent over the sudden closure of the game. This isn’t a unique scenario; even after its shutdown in January 2024, one persistent player from the game “The Day Before” managed to stay online. It took Fntastic just four days to announce “The Day Before” was being shut down, but the game continued to run for about six weeks afterward.

Despite being frequently branded as a “scam” by some gamers, Concord doesn’t fit that description. After spending around eight years in development, according to Firewalk, this shooter has been criticized for not distinguishing itself from popular hero shooters like Apex Legends and Overwatch. Even though the genre is quite crowded, Valve’s upcoming hero shooter Deadlock, with its impressive number of over 100,000 simultaneous players, demonstrates that there’s still a potential for success, as it hasn’t even been officially launched yet.
