Man, RPGs are *everywhere* right now, which is awesome! Whether I’m playing on my console or PC, there’s just so much good stuff coming out. Seriously, if you check out Steam, it’s packed with amazing games – everything from small indie projects to huge AAA titles that everyone’s already talking about.
It can be tough for RPG fans to choose their next game on Steam with so many highly-rated options. A good place to start is by reading reviews on each game’s page. If you’re still unsure, here are some RPGs that consistently receive “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews and are great additions to any game library.
South Park: The Stick Of Truth
A Comedic RPG With Gameplay Similar To Paper Mario
For years, South Park fans had been disappointed by poor video game adaptations. That all changed in 2014 with South Park: The Stick of Truth, which was the first truly well-made game based on the show. Creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker teamed up with Obsidian Entertainment to guarantee the game captured the series’ unique humor and was genuinely fun to play.
The game definitely lived up to expectations. *The Stick of Truth* is a fun and easy-to-pick-up role-playing game with turn-based combat. It’s similar to the *Paper Mario* series, adding timed button presses to keep things interesting. The writing and story are exactly what you’d expect from *South Park* – funny, smart, and often crude, feeling almost like a full-length movie. Its sequel, *The Fractured But Whole*, is also excellent, though it has slightly fewer overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Changed The Gaming Landscape Forever
While technically the third game in the *Witcher* series, *The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt* is the one that truly made the franchise and its developer, CD Projekt Red, famous. Despite being released when interest in western action RPGs was declining, it was a critical and commercial success, earning the Game of the Year award in 2015.
What truly sets *The Witcher 3* apart? It’s hard to say in just a few words! It’s a stunningly well-crafted role-playing game. You play as Geralt of Rivia, a compelling and layered character, battling frightening monsters in a rich world filled with memorable people and engaging side quests. The game is incredibly addictive to play, and the graphics remain impressive even after a decade.
Undertale / Deltarune
Toby Fox’s Bizarre But Charming Pacifist RPGs
Man, I still remember when *Undertale* dropped back in 2015. Toby Fox and his team totally shook up the indie RPG world! It wasn’t like anything I’d played before – a turn-based RPG with these crazy bullet hell fights, but the big thing was you didn’t *have* to kill anyone. You could actually talk your way through everything, which was a really cool idea. Plus, the music was incredible, the story was super emotional, and it was hilarious! And on top of all that, it didn’t cost much. No wonder it became a huge hit so fast – it quickly became a cult classic, and for good reason!
Toby Fox and his team didn’t stop with *Undertale*. Years later, they released the first chapter of *Deltarune*, a game considered a follow-up and a long-held dream project for the developer. *Deltarune* improves on *Undertale* in several ways, featuring more intricate battles, a fantastic soundtrack, enhanced visuals, and a more engaging story. Although only four chapters are currently available, each one is packed with creativity and substance. Both *Undertale* and *Deltarune* have received “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews on Steam, and rightfully so.
Persona 5 Royal
One Of The Best Turn-Based JRPGs Ever Made
The *Persona* series was already well-liked, but *Persona 5* made it incredibly popular around the world, gaining a huge following. Now, for anyone wanting to experience it, the improved version, Persona 5 Royal, became available on Steam in 2022 after being exclusive to PlayStation for several years.
At its core, *Persona 5 Royal* is about the Phantom Thieves, a team of high school students with the ability to reform the hearts of wicked individuals. Beyond its clever premise, charming characters, and captivating story, the game’s popularity stems from its engaging gameplay. It expertly blends fast-paced turn-based battles with relaxing life simulation elements. The game’s distinctive style is further enhanced by its vibrant anime visuals and memorable music.
Hades
An Accessible, Addictive Rogue-Like Action RPG
Okay, so rogue-likes can be super tough, but *Hades* is different – it’s one of the easiest to get into, which is probably why everyone’s been raving about it since it came out in 2020. You play as Zagreus, Hades’ son, and basically you’re trying to escape the Underworld. That means fighting through tons of enemies and exploring a bunch of different dungeons to get out.
As a huge fan, I can tell you the combat in *Hades* is just unbelievably fast and exciting! What really hooked me was how the game encourages you to explore different builds and keep trying, because it really rewards you for it. Plus, getting to know all the gods and monsters from Greek mythology is a blast – they’re beautifully designed and the writing is so clever. Honestly, *Hades* is one of those games you can play again and again – it’s totally addictive. And with *Hades 2* just released in September 2025, now is the *perfect* time to jump into the original and see what all the hype is about!
Yakuza: Like A Dragon
Turned Like A Dragon Into An RPG Franchise
The *Like a Dragon* series, formerly known as *Yakuza*, was always known for its over-the-top action and charming characters. But in 2020, the game took a surprising turn with *Yakuza: Like a Dragon*. This new installment replaced the series’ traditional real-time fighting with a turn-based battle system. Surprisingly, it became a huge hit with both critics and players.
Changing the style of a game within an established series is often risky, but fans of the *Like a Dragon* games loved the switch to turn-based combat. It kept all the things that made the series great – the fun, exciting, and over-the-top action – while adding a ton of enjoyable side quests and silly things to do. If you enjoy this game, you should also check out its sequel, *Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth* (released in 2024), though it’s too highly rated on Steam to be included here.
Baldur’s Gate 3
A Well-Deserved Game Of The Year Win
Steam has several great Dungeons & Dragons video games, but Baldur’s Gate 3 is widely considered the best. It’s become incredibly popular, even drawing in players new to the genre. This award-winning game successfully captures the magic of the classic tabletop RPG and transforms it into a captivating digital experience.
From the start, when you create your character in *Baldur’s Gate 3*, it’s clear the game offers incredible variety, making each experience unique. The combat is complex and changes based on your character’s skills, history, and the companions you choose. With meaningful decisions, memorable characters, and a captivating story full of surprises, it’s no wonder *Baldur’s Gate 3* was named Game of the Year in 2023, even surpassing other fantastic games like *Tears of the Kingdom* and *Alan Wake 2*.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
A Brand-New IP That Captivated Gamers Around The World
As a huge RPG fan, I’m honestly blown away by how quickly Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has become a phenomenon! Usually, the big, established RPG franchises are all anyone talks about, so it’s amazing to see a brand new game get so much love, and so fast – especially outside the indie world. Seriously, it’s already being called the best game of 2025 by a lot of people, and the critical acclaim is totally deserved!
Created by a team of about thirty people, *Clair Obscur* really shines thanks to its exciting combat system. It uses quick-time events during battles to make the action feel new, fast, and immersive. The game’s beautiful visuals, charming characters, and compelling story also helped make it incredibly popular. Ultimately, *Clair Obscur* is such a well-crafted and innovative game that it even won over many people who typically dislike RPGs, turning them into fans.
