These 3 Pokemon in FireRed and LeafGreen Are Must-Haves For All The Best Teams

This article was last updated on March 23, 2026, by Andrea Trama, incorporating information about another powerful Pokémon. It was originally published on March 14.

While Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen add the Sevii Islands and a full National Pokédex (up to Generation 3) beyond the original games, they’re still fundamentally based on the Kanto region. Most of your gameplay will focus on catching Pokémon from the Kanto Pokédex, as creatures from later generations are only available after you’ve completed the main story and beaten the Elite Four. Although there’s more to do than just defeat the champions, the heart of the experience remains centered around Kanto and the first few Sevii Islands.

The Kanto region has a lot of strong Pokémon, but it’s important to remember that FireRed and LeafGreen use an older battle system. These games divide moves into purely physical or special damage types, with no exceptions. This means some Pokémon become much more effective – or ineffective – based on their stats and the moves they learn. Because of this, Mr. Mime, Nidoking, and Jynx stand out as exceptionally strong choices for any team, no matter which starter Pokémon you pick.

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen’s Mr. Mime Solos The Elite Four

In Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, the only way to get Mr. Mime is by trading an Abra to a character on Route 2. This character will always trade you a Mr. Mime with a Timid nature, which makes it naturally fast. Since you can’t catch Mr. Mime in the game any other way, getting a guaranteed Timid version is really helpful if you want to build a speedy and powerful Pokemon by training its Effort Values (EVs).

As a big Pokémon fan, I’ve found a really cool way to build up Mr. Mime! If you want to maximize its Speed, battling Pokémon like Pidgey, Pidgeotto, Rattata, and Raticate is a great idea. Then, heading to Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town lets you boost its Special Attack by battling all the Gastly and Haunter. But honestly, Mr. Mime is a beast in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen – it can almost solo the Elite Four! It learns such powerful moves like Magical Leaf, Psychic, Thunderbolt, and Calm Mind, which makes it incredibly strong. Basically…

  • Mr. Mime can one-shot all of Lorelei’s Pokemon with either Magical Leaf or Thunderbolt
  • Mr. Mime can one-shot all of Bruno’s Pokemon with either Magical Leaf or Psychic
  • Mr. Mime can one-shot all of Agatha’s Pokemon with Psychic
  • Mr. Mime can two-shot all of Lance’s Pokemon with Psychic (or one-shot them if you use Calm Mind first), and one-shot Aerodactyl with Thunderbolt
  • Mr. Mime can one-shot the Champion’s Pidgeot with Thunderbolt, Rhydon with Magical Leaf, and Gyarados with Thunderbolt, and it can two-shot Blastoise with Thunderbolt (or one-shot after a Calm Mind) as well as Venusaur with Psychic (or one-shot after a Calm Mind)

You Shouldn’t Sleep on Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen’s Nidoking and Jynx

You might be surprised to see Jynx on a list of top Pokémon, but there are strong reasons why it deserves a spot. Each Pokémon on this list offers unique strengths or performs better than others in key areas. While you don’t have to include them, building a truly competitive team in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen often means utilizing both.

Why Nidoking is One of the Best Pokemon in FireRed and LeafGreen

Nidoking is a top-tier Pokémon in FireRed and LeafGreen. It’s a powerful Poison and Ground-type with a diverse range of moves and solid stats. What makes it even better is how early you can obtain it – you can find a male Nidoran on Route 3, evolve it into Nidorino by level 16 before entering Mt. Moon, and then use a Moon Stone found inside the mountain to evolve it all the way into Nidoking.

Finding Nidoran can be tricky in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. Route 3 mostly has one gender or the other: in FireRed, you’re much more likely to find male Nidoran (14% chance), while LeafGreen favors female Nidoran (1% chance for male).

The best moves for Nidoking include:

  • TM 28, Dig — You get it in Cerulean City, then replace it with Earthquake
  • Thrash — Nidoking learns it at level 22, then replace it with Megahorn
  • Megahorn — Nidoking learns it at level 43
  • Rock Slide – Move Tutor inside Rock Tunnel, can only be learned once
  • TM 26, Earthquake — You get it after beating Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen‘s Viridian City Gym
  • TM 24, Thunderbolt — You can purchase it for 4,000 coins at the Celadon City Game Corner
  • TM 13, Ice Beam — You can purchase it for 4,000 coins at the Celadon City Game Corner
  • HM 03, Surf — Obtain it in the Secret House inside the Safari Zone in FireRed and LeafGreen

If you’re short on PokeDollars and want to buy Coins in Celadon City, there’s a trick in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen that lets you duplicate items from the mail.

Nidoqueen is a solid Pokémon, but it focuses more on durability – having high HP, Defense, and Special Defense – at the expense of strong attacking power and speed. Though it learns different moves, like Superpower instead of Megahorn, Nidoking generally performs better.

Jynx is Secretly a Powerhouse in FireRed and LeafGreen

You can obtain Jynx relatively early in FireRed and LeafGreen, but it takes a bit of work. First, you’ll need to finish the stories at the Game Corner in Celadon City and the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town to get the Poke Flute and wake up Snorlax. Then, obtain the Super Rod and use it on Routes 6, 22, and 25 to catch a Poliwhirl. Finally, trade the Poliwhirl to the old man in the house to the left of the Cerulean City Pokemon Center, and he’ll give you Jynx in return.

It’s not possible to hunt for shiny Pokémon for in-game trades in FireRed and LeafGreen. Getting a shiny Jynx requires breeding, so it can only be done after you finish the main story. This particular Jynx will always have a Mild nature, boosting its Special Attack while lowering its Defense.

Jynx is a powerful Pokémon in the Kanto remakes because its type matchups are excellent against tough opponents, and it learns a wide variety of useful moves. It starts with Lovely Kiss, which has a high chance of putting enemies to sleep. At level 25, it learns Ice Punch, a special-based move that benefits from Jynx’s high Special Attack stat. You can also teach Jynx Psychic before facing the Gym Leaders Sabrina and Koga, and it can learn other strong moves like Ice Beam, Calm Mind, Thief, Water Pulse, Reflect, and Light Screen.

Jynx is a really valuable Pokémon to have, especially if you’re playing a Nuzlocke or trying to build a strong team. Here’s where it really shines in battle:

  • Erika: Jynx having Ice Punch at level 25 means you can power through the Celadon City Gym easily with it.
  • Koga: If you get the Psychic TM in Saffron City before battling Koga, you can easily beat its Poison-type Pokemon.
  • Sabrina: If you teach Jynx Thief and Calm Mind, then Sabrina can be a rather easy fight.
  • Giovanni: Giovanni’s Ground-type Pokemon are all easy to clear with a speedy attacker like Jynx, with Ice being supereffective against Ground.
  • Bruno: Jynx can easily clear Bruno’s entire team with Ice Beam and Psychic.
  • Agatha: Much like with Koga and Bruno, teaching Jynx Psychic can make you easily sweep Agatha’s team.
  • Lance: Lance uses a team made mainly of Dragon-types and Flying-types, and Jynx can typically one-shot three out of five mons (Dragonair and Dragonite), with the main issues coming from Gyarados and Aerodactyl.
  • Champion: Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen‘s Champion uses a different team based on your starter, but Jynx can clear at least three out of six Pokemon (Pidgeot, Rhydon, and Exeggutor/Venusaur).
