Next month’s release of Pokemon Champions marks a new stage for competitive Pokemon battling. It will work with Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on Nintendo Switch. Once Pokemon Home support is added for FireRed and LeafGreen, players will be able to bring their Kanto region Pokemon into Champions. Because Champions is designed for competitive play, there are six Pokemon from FireRed and LeafGreen that players might want to save for transfer.
One of the most anticipated features of Pokemon Champions is the return of Mega Evolution to official competitive battles. Several strong Pokemon from Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen that could Mega Evolve haven’t been very useful in Pokemon VGC since Generation 7. While it’s hard to predict exactly how the game will play with these new Mega Evolutions, six historically powerful Pokemon are likely to be worth bringing over from FireRed and LeafGreen to Champions.
Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Players Will Want to Transfer These Mons for Competitive Battles in Champions

When transferring Pokémon from FireRed and LeafGreen to Champions, players will likely prioritize those with strong Mega Evolutions. Gengar, Kangaskhan, and Mewtwo were top choices in the past, and Mega Dragonite could become just as popular. Even Pokémon that can’t Mega Evolve, like Entei and Porygon2, are worth considering, as they’ve been competitive in recent Pokémon VGC tournaments and could excel in Champions too.

Dragonite is a very powerful Pokémon, considered a ‘Pseudo-Legendary’ with a high overall stat total of 600. What really sets it apart is its combination of useful Abilities and access to strong Dragon-type physical attacks, like Outrage. Its Inner Focus prevents opponents from making it flinch or lowering its Attack, but Multiscale is often considered the better choice. Multiscale cuts the damage Dragonite takes in half as long as it’s at full health.

Mega Evolution boosts Dragonite’s overall strength by 100 points and changes how its stats are distributed. Before Mega Evolving, Dragonite could attack in both physical and special ways, but Mega Dragonite focuses more on special attacks. Whether this is helpful or not depends on its new Ability, but it could ultimately make Dragonite more adaptable in Pokemon Champions.

Porygon2 doesn’t always stand out, especially since it’s an evolution of Porygon. But because it hasn’t fully evolved, it can equip the Eviolite item, significantly boosting its defenses and making it a very durable Pokemon. Its low Speed makes it ideal for setting up Trick Room, a strategy that lets slower Pokemon attack first. This combination of strong defenses, good Special Attack, and the ability to move quickly in Trick Room makes Porygon2 a surprisingly effective and valuable teammate in Pokemon Champions.
Getting Porygon2 in FireRed and LeafGreen is a bit tricky. You first need to win a Porygon at the Game Corner. Then, after you unlock the National Pokédex, you have to trade it while it’s holding the Upgrade item.
Entei: A Fast Physical Attacker with a Fantastic Ability

Entei is another strong Pokémon from Generation 2 that you can catch after beating the main story in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. It’s especially useful if you started with Bulbasaur. Entei is fast, hits hard, and can take a few hits itself. But the biggest reason to add it to your team in Pokémon Champions is its Inner Focus ability. This prevents opponents from lowering Entei’s Attack stat with moves like Intimidate. With that taken care of, Entei can unleash a powerful Sacred Fire attack, which is great against Steel-type Pokémon and helps cover weaknesses for teammates like Dragonite against Fairy types.
Kangaskhan: The Terror of the Gen 6 Meta

Kangaskhan’s base stats total 490, but it’s not particularly strong by itself. While its Normal typing isn’t great for attacking, its Scrappy ability lets it damage Ghost-type Pokémon. But when Kangaskhan Mega Evolves, it becomes incredibly powerful, forming one of the most dominant combinations in the sixth generation of Pokémon games.

Okay, so Mega Kangaskhan is seriously strong because of its ability, Parental Bond. Basically, it lets me use almost any attack twice in a row, but the second hit isn’t as strong – it does 25% less damage. It used to be way better, but it’s still awesome! I love using Power-Up Punch with it. That move boosts Kangaskhan’s Attack, and because of Parental Bond, I get two Attack boosts instead of one! It makes Mega Kangaskhan super powerful, super fast, and a real threat in battle.
Gengar: A Special Attacker and Mega Evolution Dual-Threat

Gengar is a strong competitive Pokémon thanks to its high Special Attack and Speed. Although transferring Gengar from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen to Pokémon Champions means it loses the Levitate ability, its Cursed Body ability can still be useful, giving it a 30% chance to disable an opponent’s physical attack. However, Gengar truly shines in Pokémon Champions with its Mega Evolution, which is considered one of the most consistently powerful Mega Evolutions in the entire series.

When Gengar Mega-Evolves, its Special Attack and Speed increase dramatically, making it even more powerful. It can also use the move Nasty Plot to boost its Special Attack even further. Combined with its Shadow Tag ability, which prevents opponents from switching Pokemon, Mega Gengar can effectively trap and quickly defeat enemies with powerful moves like Shadow Ball and Sludge Wave.
Mewtwo: The Strongest Gen 1 Mega Evolution

As a huge Pokémon fan, I’m so excited about the possibility of transferring Mewtwo from FireRed and LeafGreen to Pokémon Champions! It’s a classic Kanto Legendary, and a really strong Psychic-type. It’s super fast and hits hard with special attacks, and can learn moves that cover a lot of different types. But honestly, the biggest reason I want it in Champions is because of its two different Mega Evolutions – they’re incredible and totally change how you can play!

Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y give players a choice: a Mewtwo focused on physical attacks or one focused on special attacks. Both are strong choices, significantly boosting their attack power while maintaining Mewtwo’s natural speed. However, Mega Mewtwo Y is generally considered better because Mewtwo learns powerful special moves like Psystrike and Aura Sphere, and it’s slightly faster than Mega Mewtwo X.
