The term “Eldritch” refers to something eerie or supernaturally unsettling. It’s often found in strange fiction literature, like the Cthulhu mythos, and video games frequently feature Eldritch creatures as their bizarre, otherworldly enemies.

Unfathomable entities, inherently elusive to our senses, reside on the thin line between existence and nonexistence. They defy conventional understanding of what is natural or real. Let me share some of the most terrifying Eldritch beings and Lovecraftian creatures encountered in video games.

7. God From Silent Hill

“Pray For The Day Of The Miraculous Descent”

In the Silent Hill saga, the deity is conjured up and instigates time’s existence so that agony doesn’t persist forever. Eventually, this deity perishes, yet before doing so, she imparts to her believers that she will reappear. The Order interprets this as a form of resurrection, making it their duty to facilitate the return of their god. They strive to discover a human host, a human uterus, to give birth to the deity and usher in an everlasting utopia.

In this series, she’s portrayed as a very potent deity with numerous manifestations, not all of which are malicious by nature. At times, she assumes a grotesque form as an incubus, while at other instances, she seems more enigmatic or even benevolent. The interpretation of her character seems quite personal and open to individual perspectives, much like the overall atmosphere of Silent Hill. However, what makes this god truly chilling is the heinous actions carried out in her name by The Order.

6. Cthylla From The Sinking City

Titled “The Submerged Town,” Oakmont finds itself submerged and tormented by various Eldritch terrors. This town teems with monstrous creatures called Wylde Beasts, fervent cultists, enigmatic disappearances, and madness triggered by supernatural events. The main character, Charles Reed, is lured to Oakmont by visions and sets out to unravel the links between these peculiar occurrences.

It seems that Charles is fated to make a selfless sacrifice to a cosmic entity reminiscent of the Cthulhu folklore, Cthylla – who is both daughter and mother to Cthulhu. Cthylla and the King in Yellow are key figures in a complex web of ancient beings, beyond human comprehension, governing their own mysterious ecology. By choosing to sacrifice himself, Charles Reed has the power to either halt or continue an apocalyptic pattern of life, death, and agony.

5. The Hiss from Control

As a fervent admirer, I must say that in the realm of supernatural occurrences within Control, The Hiss is quite baffling to grasp. In overly simplified terms, it could be likened to a resonance acting somewhat like a virus. It propagates through the chants and incantations of those who are essentially under its control. However, aligning oneself with Polaris, its counteracting resonance, can empower individuals to resist The Hiss.

As a devoted admirer of Remedy Entertainment, I can’t help but spot the striking resemblances between the enigmatic Hiss in Control and the haunting Dark Presence from Alan Wake. This undeniable similarity hints that the Hiss isn’t an isolated phenomenon within the Remedy Universe Expansion. Instead, it suggests a multitude of bewildering entities that challenge our understanding, not to mention our ability to control them.

4. The Old Ones From Bloodborne

“When The Great Ones Descend, A Womb Will Be Blessed With Child”

In the grungy, blood-soaked appearance of Yharnam at the start of Bloodborne, there lies a universe steeped in cosmic dread and ancient deities – the domain of The Great Ones. These enigmatic beings, only visible to those with discernment, tower over the world of Bloodborne, remaining hidden until Rom is conquered.

In contrast to the monstrous, logically structured bosses from the earlier game, the Great Ones in Bloodborne are utterly bizarre and seem to defy anatomical logic. They manifest by possessing women with the intention of spawning another Great One. The Moon Presence, a Great One, is the actual final boss of Bloodborne and can be unlocked by consuming three “third umbilical cords” in one playthrough.

3. The Entity From Dead By Daylight

“You’ll Never Wake Up Again”

Although it may seem outdated, “Dead By Daylight” does carry a cohesive storyline. A mysterious force called The Entity serves as the main antagonist, manipulating events from a state of pure consciousness. This entity feeds on human suffering and negative emotions, using the trial grounds that players navigate as a means to do so.

In the worlds it’s grabbing subjects from, The Entity seems to lack understanding of the cultural nuances, leading to a bizarre blend of traditional horror tropes and distinctive characters. Essentially, it serves as a hunting ground where participants are reborn, their memories erased, to endure fresh torment and supply The Entity with more nourishment.

2. The Shape From Still Wakes The Deep

You Know The Drill

The story Still Wakes the Deep unfolds on a secluded oil platform off the Scottish coastline, providing an ideal backdrop for an otherworldly creature encounter. This ominous setting introduces “The Shape,” a malevolent growth that has infiltrated the rig and is causing chaos among the workers. The exact shape of this entity remains elusive, but it appears as a writhing, tentacled mass resembling a fleshy root.

It seems that the enigmatic Form significantly influences both the physical and mental well-being of the drilling team. Some unfortunate individuals are gradually consumed or incorporated by this Entity. In contrast, others undergo strange transformations, becoming violent and hostile, instantly attacking their fellow crew members upon encounter.

Eveline, who appears to be an ordinary 10-year-old girl, hides a terrifying secret. Her longing for love and acceptance, which is heartbreaking in its innocence, is what breeds the eerie atmosphere of the Baker household.

Eveline’s history traces back to the tragic death of Mother Miranda’s daughter in a remote village, marking the start of a long line of trauma and violence. Despite her fear and emotional fragility, Eveline is undeniably one of the most chilling adversaries in the Resident Evil series.
