Red Dead Redemption 2 is widely considered one of the most remarkable games ever created. Its incredible depth is especially noticeable in the realistic behavior of characters and the way the main character, Arthur, evolves throughout the story.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a huge, complex game with lots of hidden features. While many of these secrets have been discovered since the game came out, there are still some things that only the most dedicated fans are aware of.
You Can Avoid Certain Bear Attacks By Standing Still
Don’t Use This Advice In Real Life
Just a warning: don’t actually try this with a real bear! But in the game Red Dead Redemption 2, you can sometimes avoid a bear attack by staying perfectly still. If a bear sees you from far away, look directly at it and don’t move at all.
If a bear approaches you growling and running, staying completely still and unarmed will usually make it back away. However, this tactic only works on bears you encounter naturally – not those involved in quests or special events. Also, be careful if you can’t see the bear but can hear or spot it on your map, as it might still attack.
Instantly Reload Guns By Entering Dead Eye
This Can Come In Clutch In Combat
Okay, so if you’re like me and love getting the most out of everything in Red Dead 2, there’s this trick to instantly reload your weapon. It’s super effective! But honestly, if you’re more into a realistic experience, you might want to skip it – it kinda breaks the immersion. I personally use it when I’m going for a high score or tackling a tough challenge, but sometimes I just prefer to play it cool and reload the normal way.
If you’re down to your last bullet, quickly activate and exit Deadeye to instantly reload your gun, skipping the usual animation and saving valuable time. While you’ll technically lose that final bullet, this trick is incredibly helpful during fast-paced fights. To start Deadeye, aim your weapon and use these controls:
- Xbox: RS
- PlayStation: R3
- PC: Middle Mouse Button
Pick Up & Smoke Cigars That NPCs Drop
Unhygienic, But A Cool Detail
To truly experience how realistic Red Dead Redemption 2 is, players should wander through a town and observe the NPCs. If they look closely, they’ll notice NPCs occasionally discard their cigars on the ground – a small detail that makes the world feel more alive, even though it depicts a less desirable behavior.
What really stands out is that this cigar isn’t just a simple prop. Arthur can actually examine it and the game allows you to hold the button to make him smoke it. He’ll take a single puff, though, and then discard it – leaving it for the next character to find. This behavior is unique to cigars; it doesn’t apply to cigarettes.
Tame Wild Horses Faster By Riding Them Into Water
Particularly Useful For Those Who Struggle With This Mechanic
Breaking wild horses in Red Dead Redemption 2 can be tricky and time-consuming. But, there’s a quick way to do it: if you find a horse near a lake or river, you can immediately ride it into the water to begin the taming process.
If the water is deep enough to cover most of the horse, it will quickly calm down and become easier to tame. However, you won’t find all the best horses in RDR2 near water sources.
Shooting Holes In Boats Fills Them Up & Causes Them To Sink
An Incredible Example Of The Game’s Engine
I love how detailed Red Dead Redemption 2 is! It’s not always about being productive, sometimes I just mess around to see what the game will do. Like, if I shoot a hole in a little wooden boat, it doesn’t just look damaged – an actual hole appears, and the boat starts filling up with water. It’s seriously impressive how realistic the physics are!
Over time, water will fill the boat, causing it to sink. Players might even be able to intentionally use this to their advantage and sink enemy boats.
You Can Survive Great Heights By Landing On Your Horse & Mounting
This Could Come In Handy One Day
If you’re feeling adventurous and trying to pull off some Assassin’s Creedstyle parkour in Red Dead Redemption 2*, especially while evading the law in Saint Denis, there’s a simple trick to prevent injury from falls.
To succeed, players must position their horse directly under their intended jump point. If they aim correctly, they’ll land on the horse and avoid falling to the ground.
Arthur Gains Weight Much Faster By Sleeping After Eating
Use This Knowledge To Move Up The Weight Classes
In Red Dead Redemption 2, most players are aware that Arthur Morgan’s hair grows and his weight fluctuates over time. What many might not know is that, like in real life, Arthur actually needs to sleep to gain weight.
Inside the game, players should try to sleep as soon as they’ve eaten and had enough to drink. They can quickly wake up after a short rest and repeat this cycle. Doing so can help them benefit from the advantages of a higher weight class.
Duplicate Consumables By Climbing At The Right Time
A Glitch That Provides Unlimited Consumables
If you’re constantly running out of items like tonics in Red Dead Redemption 2, this glitch can help. To use it, position Arthur right next to a fence, rock, or anything he can climb over before using an item from the item wheel.
Right after using the item, climb something and you should feel its effects. The good news is, the item won’t disappear from your inventory, so Arthur can use it as many times as he wants! Try it out with an item you have a lot of – it might take a couple of attempts to get the timing right.
Unique Melee Ranged Arrow Kills
A Surprisingly Effective Stealth Tactic
Bows and arrows are effective both from a distance and in close combat, allowing for quick, silent takedowns. There are two ways to do this, both starting with equipping a bow and arrow. The first involves approaching an enemy with your bow drawn and rapidly pressing the fire button twice. Arthur will then kick the enemy before shooting them.
To do this second move, approach the enemy with your bow drawn, but press the button to perform a melee attack instead. Arthur will then punch the enemy before quickly stabbing them in the neck with an arrow.
Your Horse Will Return Immediately When You Make Camp
Use This Trick If Your Horse Ever Ends Up Out Of Whistling Range
If you ever get separated from your horse and don’t want to walk a long distance to find it, there’s a useful trick you can use.
When you’re ready to move camp in the wilderness, just open your item wheel and choose the Crafting Camp. Your horse will instantly return to that location – you don’t need to sleep or wait! Best of all, using the Crafting Camp doesn’t use it up; you can use it as many times as you like. It also serves as a fast travel point in Red Dead Redemption 2.
