In the preview for Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, Venom Snake said “Kept you waiting, huh?” If Hollow Knight: Silksong had a release date trailer, Hornet could have teased the fans like that, as they have eagerly awaited this gaming experience since the initial trailer launched in 2019.
Following a long period of anticipation, everyone will soon get to experience “Hollow Knight: Silksong”. The fanbase has been vibrant and active all along. As with many sequels, the excitement among fans is such that they inevitably find themselves comparing the new game to its predecessor. Let’s delve into some aspects where “Hollow Knight: Silksong” excels over the original, specifically focusing on gameplay enhancements without revealing any story spoilers.
1. Expanded Exploration: The sequel offers a more expansive world for players to explore, filled with new environments and secrets to uncover.
2. Enhanced Combat System: “Silksong” introduces refined mechanics that allow for more fluid and strategic battles, making combat even more engaging than before.
3. Improved Platforming Mechanics: The platforming elements in the sequel have been optimized to provide a smoother and more responsive experience, making traversal through various terrains more enjoyable.
4. Diverse Enemies and Bosses: A broader range of enemies and bosses adds variety to combat encounters and encourages players to develop new strategies for success.
5. Quality-of-Life Improvements: Minor tweaks to the user interface, navigation, and overall game flow contribute to a more polished and streamlined experience for players.
These enhancements aim to create an even more immersive and captivating adventure in “Hollow Knight: Silksong”, building upon the foundations laid by the original game while introducing fresh elements to keep fans engaged.
Hornet’s Crests
Downward Strike vs Diagonal
One immediate difference fans will spot in Hollow Knight: Silksong is that Hornet’s downward attack differs from the Knight’s in Hollow Knight. While the Knight performs a straightforward downward strike, players often utilized this move to repeatedly bounce off enemies in a manner reminiscent of games such as DuckTakes and Shovel Knight. Conversely, Hornet executes a diagonal attack, requiring players to strategize their moves more carefully due to the swift direction of the assault.
In the game Hollow Knight: Silksong, players have the opportunity to discover and outfit new Crests that allow them to alter attack patterns, such as a downward strike, if desired. Notably, for enthusiasts of the original downward strike system, there are available Crests in Hollow Knight: Silksong that can modify Hornet’s attack patterns. Even though initially, some fans might react negatively, it’s worth noting that Hornet possesses more customizable abilities compared to The Knight, which is a beneficial aspect overall.
Video Footage Is Not Blocked On Switch 2
A Plus For Archivists
As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed an interesting quirk between the Switch versions of Hollow Knight – video recording is off-limits, but you can take screenshots, and they come out at a resolution of 720p, even on the Switch 2. However, in the upcoming Hollow Knight: Silksong, players will have more freedom! They can capture both video and screenshots, with the quality of these media being boosted to a crisp 1080p, whether docked or not.
The game is excellent for those who might want to commemorate their victories with a video, particularly when it comes to close calls. While this isn’t a major concern for most players, it’s worth noting that there seems to be a difference in the video capture feature between the two Switch versions. Regardless of personal opinions on video recording, it’s also important to mention that the upcoming Switch 2 version of “Hollow Knight: Silksong” runs more smoothly than the original launch version of “Hollow Knight.
The Colors And Art
Everything Pops
In contrast to Switch, the game “Hollow Knight: Silksong” demonstrates profound shifts in artistry across various systems. As a hand-drawn title, “Hollow Knight” remains exceptional, yet its visuals lean towards darker and softer tones, even in luminous areas. For instance, when players initially meet Hornet in “Hollow Knight”, her cloak is noticeably less vibrant compared to her appearance in “Hollow Knight: Silksong.
By watching both the announcement trailer and release date trailer for Hollow Knight: Silksong, fans can notice how the art and color palette have evolved and improved over time. The enhanced coloration and refined art style in Hollow Knight: Silksong showcase Team Cherry’s artistic growth, which isn’t limited to just visual upgrades but demonstrates their overall design talent as a small indie studio.
Hornet’s Equipment System
Charms Vs Trinkets
In the realm of my gaming adventures, I’ve noticed that both Hollow Knight and its sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, offer accessories similar to what you find in many role-playing games. In Hollow Knight, these are called Charms, which players can gather to enhance various aspects and grant unique abilities. These Charms can be equipped at designated benches. However, things get a bit more intricate with Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Trinkets. Similar to the Charms, they need to be equipped at benches as well, but there’s a twist. The game features a Crest system, which allows me to equip one blue Trinket, one yellow Trinket, and one Tool simultaneously.
In the game “Hollow Knight: Silksong”, crests can open up new stages via Memory Lockets. This will grant players the opportunity to collect two trinkets of each color. The accessory system in “Hollow Knight: Silksong” is slightly more restrictive compared to “Hollow Knight,” but as previously discussed with the downward strike, crests provide additional customization possibilities. Adapting to this change might take a bit of practice.
There Are More Branching Paths Earlier
Explore To Your Heart’s Content
In the upcoming game “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” the new realm is called Pharloom. Initially, players begin their journey within some ruins, before the game expands to Bone Bottom and later The Marrow. Although there’s a slight linear path through these areas, they are all cohesively connected. The branching paths offer more clarity, enabling players to explore at their leisure, as they wish. While “Hollow Knight” did provide choices, the sequel refines and enhances this aspect of gameplay.
If a particular biome proves challenging for players, they have the option to switch to another part of the game. For instance, Hunter’s March and Deep Docks are two early examples. Hunter’s March can be quite demanding to master, particularly the initial downward slash attack of the Hornet, and its final boss, the Savage Beastfly, is one of the toughest in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Notably, Hunter’s March is largely optional, while Deep Docks offers a more story-focused experience and provides a more balanced play area compared to Hunter’s March.
Hornet’s Movement
From Natural Speed To Abilities
One delightful aspect of playing a Metroidvania game is acquiring new abilities. While fighting skills can be enjoyable, exploration skills are equally beneficial for smoother gameplay. For instance, Hollow Knight offers impressive traversal abilities such as the Mothwing Cloak, enabling The Knight to dash, and the Monarch Wings, providing The Knight with the double jump ability. However, among all these enhancements, none grants The Knight the ability to run.
From the outset, Hornet is slightly faster than The Knight in the sequel, but not by much. But when players gain access to Swift Step in Hollow Knight: Silksong, they can dash on the ground, in mid-air, and even allow Hornet to run at high speed. This upgrade comes early on, along with her new outfit, the Drifter’s Cloak, which lets her float like Princess Peach. These early upgrades enhance gameplay, making it more exciting, and Hornet, as a character, is particularly well-suited for intense combat and thorough exploration due to these abilities.
