This Cult Classic Scooby-Doo Video Game Would Make the Perfect Horror Film Adaptation

As a longtime Scooby-Doo fan, I’m getting seriously excited about the new Netflix series! It’s been a while – the last live-action Scooby-Doo project was back in 2010 with Curse of the Lake Monster – and it’s fantastic to see the franchise back in action. Plus, Mckenna Grace as Daphne? Yes, please! She’s a brilliant young actress and a perfect fit. After years of waiting, there’s finally a new Scooby-Doo mystery to sink my teeth into, and I, for one, can’t wait.

The upcoming Netflix series is still some time away, with the main cast just announced. There’s a lot of excitement for Scooby-Doo from people who grew up watching the classic animated movies and live-action films, and they’re eager for more adventures with the lovable talking dog. This suggests the Netflix adaptation could be very successful. However, another classic Scooby-Doo story, the video game Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights, also deserves to be adapted for a wider audience.

Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights is a Horror Movie Waiting to Be Made

Released a few weeks before the first live-action Scooby-Doo movie in May 2002, the PlayStation 2 game Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights (later released on GameCube and Xbox) wasn’t based on the film. Instead, it told an original story inspired by the original 1969 TV series. The game featured the voices of many familiar Scooby-Doo actors, including Frank Welker as Fred, BJ Ward as Velma, Scott Innes as Shaggy and Scooby, and Don Knotts. Tim Curry also starred as The Mastermind, another memorable villain from the Scooby-Doo universe.

Although it seems like a typical Scooby-Doo adventure, Night of 100 Frights perfectly captures the classic gothic horror-comedy vibe that made the original show so popular—perhaps even more so than the later movies. The setting, Mystic Manor, is a fantastic Scooby location. It begins as a standard haunted house, similar to many episodes from the original series, and even resembles the mansion from the show’s iconic intro—which the game faithfully recreates. But Mystic Manor soon evolves into a cleverly designed Metroidvania-style platformer with diverse areas that beautifully celebrate Mystery Inc.’s playfully spooky history.

You’ll explore exciting locations like Smuggler’s Cove and a spooky Hedge Maze, each with its own interesting details that make discovering them a lot of fun, especially if you enjoy the classic Scooby-Doo humor. But what really stands out is that Night of 100 Frights remembers that Scooby-Doo is, at its heart, a horror series. The game creates a genuinely creepy atmosphere, whether you’re in the courtyard of Mystic Manor, on the manor’s wet rooftops, or lost in the tight corridors of the Hedge Maze. It’s the kind of game that will keep kids on the edge of their seats, and even adults might find themselves looking over their shoulder! Night of 100 Frights offers a unique and effective brand of scary.

The game’s fantastic sound design is a major reason for its success. While the graphics effectively capture the look of the original hand-drawn series, they were limited by the technology available, much like the show itself was in 1969. The music, however, wasn’t restricted at all. The soundtrack, created by composers Todd Dennis, Tommy Tallarico, and Howard Ulyate, is incredibly catchy – you’ll often want to pause the game just to dance along! From the main menu music to tracks like “Shock on the Dock Part 1” and “Clamor in the Manor! Part 4,” the music is truly immersive. Even the boss fight songs cleverly recreate and parody the show’s iconic chase music.

As a lifelong movie and game music fan, I have to say the soundtrack to this Scooby game is genuinely incredible – it often feels better than anything they’ve done before! They even brought back Currey, and it all feels like a natural progression from the classic “Monster Mash.” Honestly, the sound design is phenomenal; it keeps you constantly on edge, genuinely scared of what’s lurking around each corner. It’s not just the big stuff, either – even the little details, like Scooby’s running and the impact sounds, add so much atmosphere. And the voice acting? Even smaller roles, like Tress MacNeille, are chilling. If you grew up with this game, certain lines – like that creepy “Hello, is anybody there?” followed by the witch’s laugh – are burned into your memory. They’re the kind of sounds that just stay with you.

A Love Letter to Scooby-Dooby-Doo!

Similar to earlier titles like Cyber Chase and later ones like Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, Night of 100 Frights is a tribute to the entire Scooby-Doo series. Throughout this 6-8 hour mystery, Scooby and the gang encounter many classic villains, including The Creeper, The Witch Doctor, The Black Knight’s Ghost, Ghost of Germino, Charlie the Funland Robot, and the Witch. Red Bread’s Ghost and Captain Cutler’s Ghost also appear. The game features collectible tokens for each ghost and monster, allowing players to learn about Scooby’s history with these enemies in the Mystic Manor museum, located near Smuggler’s Cove.

Although Monsters Unleashed shared a similar premise, that attraction debuted over two decades ago. Plenty of time has passed, making Night of 100 Frights a perfect way to re-introduce audiences to this type of experience. The smaller, contained setting—similar to the 2002 Scooby-Doo movie—could make Mystic Manor and Smuggler’s Cove a huge hit, much like Spooky Island was in the early 2000s. This is especially true if Warner Brothers brings back the original Mystery Inc. gang—Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Linda Cardellini, and Matthew Lillard—to star in it.

Scooby-Doo! Where Are You?

Since David Zaslav and Discovery took over Warner Bros. in the early 2020s, there’s been a noticeable decrease in new Scooby-Doo content. The yearly direct-to-video movies stopped with Scooby-Doo! And Krypto, Too! in 2023, and there hasn’t been a new animated series since Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? ended in 2021. The last Scooby-Doo video game was released in 2010. The franchise experienced a revival in the 2000s thanks to popular films like Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, Witch’s Ghost, and the 2002 Scooby-Doo movie, attracting a new generation of fans. Night of 100 Frights was also a standout success during this period, and its video games were particularly popular. While the studio Heavy Iron is more famous for SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom, Night of 100 Frights is widely considered the superior game, with its immersive atmosphere, creative level design, and enjoyable gameplay. The success of Night of 100 Frights led to other virtual mysteries like Mystery Mayhem, Scooby-Doo! Unmasked, and First Frights, but it remains the definitive Scooby-Doo gaming experience.

With a new Scooby-Doo series heading to Netflix, now would be a great time to revisit the Night of 100 Frights story. This cartoon is a standout in the Scooby-Doo franchise, offering a really fun experience with excellent animation, a respectful adaptation of the original material, and a perfect mix of humor and spooky thrills. Many fans haven’t felt this excited about Scooby-Doo since Monsters Unleashed in 2004. Night of 100 Frights is a true highlight of the series, and you can often find it used for around $20 – it’s sure to satisfy any Scooby-Doo fan!
