This Harry Potter Star Nearly Quit Reboot Amid J.K. Rowling Controversy

The upcoming HBO series, a fresh take on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, has generated a lot of excitement in March. We’ve seen cast members revealed, a timeframe for when it will premiere, and even a first look at the show in a trailer. This rollout is happening on a much larger scale than usual, all while the franchise addresses ongoing discussions about the author of the original Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling.

Although J.K. Rowling’s popular Harry Potter books and films continue to be enjoyed by many, her controversial opinions have damaged her reputation and are now affecting the franchise. One of the actors in the new Harry Potter series recently admitted they almost decided not to participate due to the criticism surrounding Rowling’s views.

The New Dumbledore Almost Backed Out Of The Harry Potter Series

John Lithgow, the experienced actor taking on the role of Albus Dumbledore, recently discussed his involvement in the new Harry Potter series. In an interview with The New York Times, he explained that while he hasn’t met J.K. Rowling and doesn’t share her views on gender, he believes the Harry Potter stories are fundamentally positive and stand against prejudice and hatred.

John Lithgow recently starred in Jimpa, a film by Sophie Hyde, where he plays Jim, the grandfather of a transgender teenager named Frances – a role played by the director’s child. His co-star, Aud Mason-Hyde, described Lithgow as a wonderful person to work with. However, Mason-Hyde also voiced concerns about Lithgow’s connection, even if indirect, to J.K. Rowling, and shared his thoughts on the matter.

That was a really tough situation. I don’t think it’s even worth discussing why John did what he did, but it definitely seemed like an odd choice, and honestly, it bothered me quite a bit.

Additionally, director Sophie Hyde shared that she had reached out to Hugo Weaving regarding his involvement in the show, stating:

This is a really tough situation. When I first learned about J.K. Rowling’s views, I immediately reached out to John to share my concerns. It’s not simply that she holds certain opinions, but that she’s using her public platform and financial resources to support legal challenges that are deeply harmful to transgender people, and that’s causing significant damage.

Lithgow Says Dumbledore’s Role Was A Hard Decision

According to Variety, John Lithgow explained his involvement with the Harry Potter films at a screening of Jimpa at the Rotterdam Film Festival, stating:

I deeply respect the importance of this work. She’s built a powerful and influential world for young readers, and it’s really captured the public’s imagination – it explores classic themes of good versus evil and kindness versus cruelty. I find her perspective on it surprisingly contradictory and hard to understand. I haven’t personally met her, and she isn’t directly involved in this particular production, but the people working on it are truly exceptional.

During the interview, the actor also shared that some people advised him to leave the project, but he decided to remain involved. He expressed his frustration with the opposition he’s faced, stating that the Harry Potter stories themselves don’t contain any transphobic views. He emphasized that the author created a story focused on kindness and acceptance, and described Dumbledore as a wonderful character.

Hugh Grant isn’t the only actor to speak out against J.K. Rowling’s views. According to IndieWire, in 2025, Paapa Essiedu, who played Snape, joined other actors and filmmakers—including Nicola Coughlan (known for Derry Girls and Bridgerton) and Bella Ramsey (from Game of Thrones and The Last of Us)—in signing a letter urging the entertainment industry to support transgender rights. This came after a U.K. Supreme Court decision defined legal womanhood based on biological sex, as reported by the BBC.

Lithgow’s analysis of Harry Potter highlights the central conflict between good and evil, and kindness and cruelty, which is a key message throughout the series. The story examines ingrained prejudices, like the belief in pure-blood superiority, and explores characters such as Draco Malfoy, who are influenced by strict ideologies. The books offer a critique of discrimination in many forms – from the mistreatment of creatures like Dobby the house-elf, to prejudice against those born to non-magical parents like Hermione Granger, and even the resistance shown by families like the Dursleys towards the wizarding world.

HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Moves Ahead Amid Controversy

Okay, so even with the connection to J.K. Rowling still being a topic of conversation, the new Harry Potter series on HBO is really starting to feel real! Originally, they were aiming for early 2027, but Casey Bloys at HBO recently announced it’s now scheduled to hit screens Christmas 2026, which is amazing news for us fans. The first season will actually be a faithful adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – that’s the original title used in the UK, which I love! It’ll premiere on HBO that Christmas, and then be available to stream on HBO Max in places like Germany, Italy, and back home in the UK & Ireland. I’m already counting down the days!

You know, my Aunt Petunia always insisted Harry Potter was perfectly ordinary. But then, on his eleventh birthday, he gets this letter… and suddenly everything changes! HBO’s upcoming series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will star Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The supporting cast at Hogwarts includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick, Sirine Saba as Pomona Sprout, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

Rory Wilmot plays Neville Longbottom, and Lox Pratt is Draco Malfoy. Leo Earley plays Seamus Finnigan, with Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, and twins Tristan and Gabriel Harland sharing the roles of Fred and George Weasley. Rounding out the student cast are Ruari Spooner as Percy Weasley, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, Finn Stephens as Vincent Crabbe, and William Nash as Gregory Goyle.

Daniel Rigby will play Harry’s uncle Vernon, alongside Bel Powley as Aunt Petunia and Amos Kitson as cousin Dudley. The cast also includes Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley, Richard Durden as Cuthbert Binns, Louise Brealey as Rolanda Hooch, Bríd Brennan as Poppy Pomfrey, Leigh Gill as Griphook, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.
