Magic: The Gathering is a game that’s constantly changing, unlike some other collectible card games where the most popular strategies stay consistent. Wizards of the Coast plans to release six major sets in 2026, which will continue to shake up the game. With new cards always being added, and the company actively banning or allowing certain cards, the game never stays the same for long. Currently, the Standard format in Magic is a back-and-forth battle as players try to counter each other’s strategies after one deck held the top spot for months.
The current competitive scene in *Magic: The Gathering* is dominated by a clear hierarchy. One deck is significantly more powerful than the rest, another is specifically built to defeat it and perform well against other common strategies, and a third is adaptable, holding its own against both of those decks while also being able to win against less popular options without relying on specific counter-cards. Interestingly, two of these top three decks heavily feature creature cards that are cats, mice, or rats – making the ‘cat and mouse game’ a very real theme. These decks are:
- Izzet Cauldron
- Mono Red Aggro
- Dimir Midrange
For Dimir Midrange decks, the featured cat cards are Enduring Curiosity and Sunspine Lynx. Mono Red Aggro decks utilize the mouse card, Emberheart Challenger, and Azure Beastbinder represents the rat card.
Magic: The Gathering’s Izzet Cauldron vs. Mono Red Aggro vs. Dimir Midrange Meta Explained
How MTG’s $700 Deck is Dominating The Scene
How MTG’s $700 Deck is Dominating The Scene
After the June 2025 Magic: The Gathering Standard bans-which targeted cards like Cori-Steel Cutter that were dominating the game-many players expected Izzet Prowess to become a top deck. Instead, a new strategy, Izzet Cauldron, emerged. This deck revolves around a powerful combination of Vivi Ornitier and Agatha’s Soul Cauldron, creating a cycle of strong creatures that quickly generate mana and allow the player to draw a large number of cards.

The Izzet Cauldron deck in Magic: The Gathering is performing so well – it’s appearing in a large number of matches – that Wizards of the Coast is addressing it earlier than planned. They’ve acknowledged that the card Vivi is likely too powerful and might be banned. While no ban has been officially announced, this response is due to Izzet Cauldron dominating recent tournaments, both online (Arena Championship, making up 54% of the meta) and in-person (Pro Tours). As a result, players are now focusing on new strategies like Mono Red Aggro, while Dimir Midrange continues to be a strong choice.
How MTG’s Mono Red Aggro Counters Izzet Cauldron

Cards like Razorkin Needlehead are strong additions to Mono Red Aggro decks because they can attack while also punishing opponents who draw too many cards – something Izzet Cauldron often tries to do with cards like Proft’s Eidetic Memory. Similarly, the cheap creatures and Emberheart Challenger in this deck can quickly reduce an opponent’s life total, something Izzet Cauldron struggles with early in the game, lacking strong blockers like Draconautics Engineer or Fear of Missing Out, or removal spells like Torch the Tower or Abrade. If Izzet Cauldron goes first, it can really disrupt Mono Red Aggro’s momentum, but in best-of-three matches, Izzet Cauldron can adjust its strategy with its sideboard.
Why Dimir Midrange is a Great Meta Pick in MTG’s Standard

Dimir Midrange decks have adjusted to face the Izzet Cauldron strategy by including Azure Beastbinder, a card that can effectively stop the Cauldron combo. They also perform well against fast Mono Red Aggro decks thanks to removal spells like Tragic Trajectory and Shoot the Sheriff, along with inexpensive counterspells. However, Izzet Cauldron can often draw more cards than Dimir Midrange, giving it an advantage. Additionally, Razorkin Needlehead presents a challenge because Shoot the Sheriff can’t target it, and it can quickly bypass the protection offered by Enduring Curiosity.

In a Dimir Midrange mirror match, even if you use Azure Beastbinder on Duskmourn’s Kaito, Bane of Nightmares, Kaito will still transform into a creature. This is because of how Magic: The Gathering handles game effects – Kaito’s change into a creature happens *before* Azure Beastbinder removes its abilities.
MTG’s Standard Meta and How It Can Change With The November 2025 Bans

The current Magic: The Gathering meta follows a pattern: Izzet Cauldron is strong until players start using Mono Red Aggro, which it can still overcome. Then, Dimir Midrange appears as a good counter to both, but doesn’t have a clear advantage. Mono Red Aggro is becoming increasingly popular, leading to more mirror matches (which can be frustrating). This keeps Dimir Midrange consistently played, while Izzet Cauldron’s performance fluctuates. Newer decks, like Mono Green, are emerging to challenge this established group and disrupt the cycle, but it takes time for them to become truly dominant.
Vivi Ornitier remains a viable card in Izzet Prowess decks, and a four-color Control strategy recently performed well in tournaments. Currently, Azorius Control makes up 5% of the meta, putting it fourth in popularity. The most played decks are Izzet Cauldron (29%), Mono Red Aggro (19%), and Dimir Midrange (13%), collectively accounting for over 60% of all decks played. Because of this dominance, these three decks are the most important to practice against.
The recent changes to when Magic: The Gathering bans cards, combined with Wizards of the Coast openly discussing potential bans for cards like Vivi and Cauldron, mean the current competitive scene will likely shift significantly in the next two months. While the new Spider-Man-themed set might not have a huge impact on Standard play, it’s too soon to know how strong the upcoming Avatar set will be-and that set releases just eleven days after Wizards announces their next list of banned and restricted cards.
