This Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair Drop is Basically Early Christmas, But You Have to Act Fast

Starting on September 26, Wizards of the Coast began sharing details about what’s coming to Magic: The Gathering in the last few months of 2025 and all throughout 2026, including a total of seven main sets. The announcements included several Secret Lair releases, some as part of a Superdrop on October 13, and others connected to PlayStation game properties launching on October 27. Magic: The Gathering‘s Secret Lair drops are often anticipated because they can give special attention to older cards that haven’t had alternate versions, or even introduce completely new cards, as seen with the new Jaws release. They also frequently offer a more affordable way to obtain reprints of valuable cards.

For instance, the Play-Doh Magic: The Gathering release today offers a great deal for the price, and Wizards of the Coast recently listed two sets (foil and regular) of vibrant artwork for basic lands for only $1 apiece. But October 13th will kick off an early festive period for MTG enthusiasts, thanks to the Artist Series: Kieran Yenner Secret Lair. This collection includes a card – Demonic Tutor – that more than justifies the cost of the purchase on its own.

MTG’s October 13 Secret Lair is Basically Free

The MTG Secret Lair drop of Kieran Yenner’s art includes four cards. These are:

  • Armageddon
  • Demonic Tutor
  • Lord of the Pit
  • Northern Paladin

Generally, these cards aren’t costly; Armageddon usually sells for about $10-$15, Lord of the Pit costs from $0.50 to $1, and Northern Paladin is typically between $0.50 and a few dollars, though it’s harder to find. However, Demonic Tutor is a pricey MTG card, commonly selling for $50 and often reaching $70, based on its condition and edition. Therefore, the Kieran Yenner Secret Lair, priced at $29.99 for the regular version and $39.99 for the foil, offers both fantastic artwork and good value with its reprints.

Magic: The Gathering’s Demonic Tutor Value Explained

Demonic Tutor alone is worth the cost of the purchase, and potentially much more, especially since this is a unique version of the card. It could easily be worth over $100 just a couple of months after the Secret Lair release. When combined with Armageddon – which is already more expensive than typical rare cards – players get at least $80-90 worth of value for only $30. Given that a similar card, a borderless Demonic Tutor from Commander Masters, sells for around $90 without the foil treatment, and knowing this is an essential card for MTG Commander decks, it’s a great deal you shouldn’t pass up.

A similar card to Magic: The Gathering’s Armageddon is found in the Amonkhet Invocations series. A foil copy in almost perfect condition typically costs $60 or more.

Although the foil version of this Secret Lair release costs an extra $10 initially, it’s a great value, especially considering Demonic Tutor alone could sell for over $100, likely around $120, in its limited foil edition. However, there’s a catch: Secret Lair operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is only available while supplies last. This has often caused issues for the game; for example, MTG‘s Marvel Secret Lair from 2024 sold out in minutes for certain characters. The excitement was high, largely due to the popularity of the Marvel collaboration.

Why MTG Players Can’t Miss Out on Secret Lair x Kieran Yenner

Even so, Demonic Tutor is a very attractive card for players looking to add it to their Commander decks. Therefore, if you want to purchase the Secret Lair version quickly, be sure to visit the official website on its release date, October 13. While it might not sell out immediately, it’s unlikely to remain available for more than a couple of days given its excellent value at just $30 or $40. And if your preferred version is unavailable, it’s definitely worth considering the other option, if it’s in stock. With the $1 basic land cycle and this incredibly valuable drop, it feels like an early Christmas, particularly for those who missed out on the new MTG Final Fantasy holiday boxes when they were first released.
