This New Overwatch Hero Has Become an Insta-Ban for Me

The recent addition of five new heroes in Overwatch Reign of Talon Season 1 has been a fantastic update, and it’s drawn me back into the game after a short break. I’m really enjoying the new direction Overwatch is taking with its updated interface, the refreshed Stadium mode, and all the new characters. However, one of these heroes is proving to be a real problem – I find them so overpowered that I consistently vote to ban them whenever I can, as dealing with them in-game just isn’t worth the frustration.

I like that the new heroes in the relaunched Season 1 of Overwatch are bringing fresh and interesting abilities to the game. Anran’s burning damage is a great addition for a damage-dealing character, and Jetpack Cat’s Lifeline ability has created some exciting new strategic possibilities. However, I think Domina is currently too strong, with a lot of advantages that make her overpowered – it feels similar to how broken Sigma was when he first came out in 2019.

Overwatch Reign of Talon Season 1 Has Me Banning Domina Every Chance I Get

I had the chance to play Domina before her official release at a preview event hosted by Blizzard. Even then, I knew she’d be a powerful character in the game. Now that she’s available in Overwatch, after playing both with and against her, it’s clear just how strong she is – her abilities seem overpowered.

Domina’s Abilities in Overwatch

  • Photon Magnum (Primary Fire): Medium-range beam that culminates in a high-impact shot.
  • Barrier Array: A segmented hard‑light barrier deployed in front of Domina. Each segment must be individually destroyed, creating dynamic defensive angles.
  • Crystal Charge: Project an explosive crystal and reactivate to detonate it.
  • Sonic Repulsors: Push enemies back, stunning them if they hit a wall.
  • Ultimate — Panopticon: Fire a hard-light projectile that imprisons enemies and detonates on expiration.
  • Passive – Reconstruction: Dealing damage with abilities restores shields.

Domina is best played as a long-range attacker who uses her Barrier Array for protection and damages enemies with her Photon Magnum. She can struggle against opponents who get close, relying mostly on her Sonic Repulsors to create space. When facing Domina, I usually pick a close-combat hero like Reinhardt (if I’m playing tank) or Anran (as a damage dealer). Despite this approach, I often find it difficult to defeat her, which is my biggest concern with her current power level.

While Jetpack Cat is currently the most commonly banned hero in Overwatch, I personally find Domina much more frustrating to play against.

Why Domina is So Frustrating to Deal With

Players familiar with Domina in Overwatch know she’s a difficult opponent to defeat. Her combination of Barrier Array and the Reconstruction ability allows her to withstand a lot of damage, especially from players who aren’t prepared. Barrier Array is a large, semi-circular shield that’s hard to break, even though players can destroy parts of it. What makes her particularly challenging is Reconstruction, which lets Domina constantly regain her shields as long as she’s actively dealing damage.

Domina is especially challenging because of her powerful Photon Magnum. It has a long reach and consistently damages opponents, finishing with a strong burst that can quickly eliminate vulnerable heroes. This allows Domina to focus on taking out weaker enemies while replenishing her shields and minimizing incoming damage, especially with support from healers like Mercy or Baptiste. On top of that, her Barrier Array adds another obstacle for enemies to overcome. It’s frustrating because I’ve often almost defeated Domina only to be killed by another enemy while trying to break through her defenses – she takes too long to eliminate.

How Domina Should Be Reworked to Be More Balanced

Okay, so I really like playing Domina in Overwatch and I want her to still be that character who can poke from a distance and be tough to take down. But honestly, some of her abilities feel a little too strong. I think reducing the damage her Photon Magnum does over time – maybe from 60 to 50 – would be a good first step. Also, because her Reconstruction ability lets her get shields back while dealing damage, I think her starting shields should be lowered a bit. Dropping them from 400 to 350 would make her feel more balanced – she’s strong offensively, but shouldn’t be too hard to take down defensively.

Even After Her Recent Nerf, Domina is Still Overpowered

A recent update to Overwatch on February 13th slightly weakened Domina by making her Barrier Array’s individual panels easier to break. While this does make her a bit more vulnerable, I still think it doesn’t fully address the amount of damage she can deal while also healing herself. I’ll keep banning her until Blizzard releases an update that lowers her overall shield strength and the damage of her Photon Magnum.
