This Persona 5 Royal Strategy is Virtually Unbeatable, But That’s Not a Good Thing

In *Persona* games, players usually have a special ability called the Wild Card, which allows them to summon a wide variety of powerful beings called Personas. These can even include Personas from other games in the series, often available as downloadable content. *Persona 5 Royal* includes one DLC Persona that is exceptionally strong, and can make even the hardest boss fights surprisingly easy. While it’s fun to easily defeat challenging enemies like Kamoshida in *Persona 5 Royal*, having such powerful DLC Personas raises concerns about the upcoming *Persona 4* remake and future installments in the series.

Izanagi-no-Okami’s Most Powerful Ability Can Make Persona 5 Royal Feel “Pay-To-Win”

Characters from *Persona 3* and *Persona 4* were added to *Persona 5* as downloadable content (DLC). When *Persona 5 Royal* came out, even more DLC was released, including a powerful Persona from *Persona 4*. Players could buy a bundle of four Personas for $9.99, or purchase all the DLC for $59.99. Later editions of *Royal* included the DLC for free to anyone who already owned the base game on PlayStation 4.

What Izanagi-no-Okami Brings to the Table

All downloadable content (DLC) Personas are quite strong, becoming available early in the game and starting at a high level. However, Izanagi-no-Okami quickly became known as the most powerful Persona among them, boasting impressive skills and traits such as:

  • Myriad Truths — hits all enemies 3x for high Almighty damage
  • Almighty Boost — strengthens Almighty attacks by 25%
  • Victory Cry — fully heals HP and SP after victory
  • Country Maker (trait) — increases attack/defense based on Persona Compendium completion

Myriad Truths is a very strong attack unique to this Persona – it can’t be learned by any other. You can make it even more powerful by fusing Personas and adding skills like Almighty Amp (which boosts its damage by 50%) and Magic Ability (which increases all magic damage by 25%).

As a huge Persona 5 Royal fan, let me tell you, Izanagi-no-Okami is just *broken* in the best way! Seriously, this Persona makes most early fights ridiculously easy, and it stays strong all the way through the game – I even used it against the final boss! The damage type it deals, Almighty, is hardly resisted by anything, so it just cuts through enemies. Joker can collect tons of Personas – over 200! – but honestly, sometimes Izanagi-no-Okami feels like all you *need*. It’s that powerful!

Considering Izanagi-no-Okami is a key god in Japanese mythology, his strength isn’t shocking, but it’s causing balance issues in the game.

Atlus Shouldn’t Repeat This Strategy In Future PersonaGames

Atlus, the game developer, is well-known for releasing a lot of downloadable content, often in large bundles, for their games. Lately, some players feel their DLC has become overly focused on giving advantages to those who pay extra, such as with these examples:

  • Shin Megami Tensei 5 DLC that boosts the appearance of Mitama enemies, allowing players to more easily earn money, EXP, and Glory.
  • Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology DLC that allowed players to earn more in-game money. Paired with the company’s controversial decision to decrease post-battle rewards, this is extra scummy.
  • The decision to release Episode Aigis as highly-priced DLC rather than include it in Persona 3 Reload.

Why DLC Personas Need to Change

Considering Atlus’ history, it’s likely that both the upcoming *Persona 4 Revival* and *Persona 6* will include downloadable content (DLC) Personas. However, Atlus should be careful not to make these DLC Personas overly powerful, like Izanagi-no-Okami. While Personas like Orpheus, Thanatos, and Satanael could be strong, they shouldn’t overshadow the core gameplay. *Persona* is about the freedom to create custom Personas through Fusion and exploit enemy weaknesses, and a single, unbeatable Persona – especially one that costs extra money – would undermine that experience.

It’s enjoyable to see beloved characters from past Persona games return, and it can be done effectively. However, future Persona games should avoid repeating what happened with Izanagi-no-Okami. Myriad Truths, for example, might have been more impactful as the special, unplayable attack from the original game, rather than a readily available ability that makes even the hardest fights too easy in Persona 5 Royal.
