On Thursday, October 16th, fans of the popular game series Pokemon will revisit the France-inspired Kalos region from Pokemon X and Y, but not in the way they’re used to. This time, it’s in the new installment called Pokemon Legends: Z-A. The game is set during a period of urban renewal in Lumiose City, long after the ending of X and Y. In this revitalized city, players will assume the role of a young traveler who starts their adventure in Lumiose. They can choose Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile as their starting Pokemon, which were originally found in games like Pokemon Gold, Silver, Black, and White. Among these three, it’s rumored that Chikorita, the Grass-type starter Pokemon, might face some challenges due to its potential Mega Evolution in Z-A.
Meganium’s Rumored Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
When Pokemon Legends: Z-A was first officially unveiled in early 2024, it was confirmed that the Mega Evolution mechanic from Pokemon X and Y would make a comeback after its absence in Pokemon Sword, Shield, Legends: Arceus, Scarlet, and Violet. In early 2025, during a Pokemon Presents event, fans got a glimpse of Mega Evolutions like Mega Lucario, Mega Absol, Mega Sableye, Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, Mega Altaria, Mega Gardevoir, Mega Ampharos, and Mega Gyarados. Throughout 2025, more pre-existing Mega Evolutions were confirmed for inclusion in Z-A, such as Mega Gengar and Mega Tyranitar. However, whispers and alleged leaks started circulating, hinting at the introduction of 27 new Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, including:
- Mega Clefable
- Mega Starmie
- Mega Victreebell
- Mega Dragonite
- Mega Meganium
- Mega Feraligatr
- Mega Skarmory
- Mega Froslass
- Mega Emboar
- Mega Scolipede
- Mega Excadrill
- Mega Eelektross
- Mega Scrafty
- Mega Chandelure
- Mega Chesnaught
- Mega Delphox
- Mega Greninja
- Mega Pyroar
- Mega Malamar
- Mega Barbaracle
- Mega Dragalge
- Mega Hawlucha
- Mega Eternal Flower Floette
- Mega Zygarde
- Mega Drampa
- Mega Falinks
During the July 2025 Pokemon Presents event, the authenticity of earlier rumored leaks about Mega Dragonite was apparently verified. Since then, more leaked information has emerged detailing the types associated with these new Mega Evolutions. While some Pokemon keep their original typing even after Mega Evolution, such as Mega Emboar remaining both Fire and Fighting type, others will acquire new typings, like Feraligatr gaining a Water/Dragon dual typing upon Mega Evolution. Similarly, it’s rumored that Meganium, the final form of Chikorita, will also change its type with Mega Evolution to Grass/Fairy, making it super effective against Feraligatr’s Water/Dragon type.
Mega Meganium’s Potential Uphill Battle in Z-A
In the anticipated game Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Mega Meganium – rumored to be a Grass/Fairy type – could give Mega Feraligatr a run for its money. However, it might struggle in battles outside of those types due to potential encounters like those with the Steel and Poison-oriented Rust Syndicate. Although not officially confirmed as the main antagonists, the Rust Syndicate’s presentation in the latest trailer hints at a possible confrontation between them, the player, and Team MZ. At minimum, Corbeau, the leader of the Rust Syndicate, will be encountered during the Z-A Royale.
In the game “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”, Corbeau is known for utilizing Poison-type Pokemon like Arbok, making him a challenging opponent for those who rely on Mega Meganium. This is because Poison-type Pokemon are highly effective against both Grass and Fairy-type Pokemon. Adding to the potential struggle against the Rust Syndicate, Mega Evolution in this game remains temporary, leaving Meganium vulnerable to Bug, Fire, Flying, Ice, and Poison-type Pokemon upon returning to its standard form. As a result, even with its new Grass/Fairy Mega Evolution, Chikorita might not be the best choice as a starter, given the presence of powerful Alpha Houndooms and diverse rogue Mega-Evolved Pokemon throughout Lumiose.
