As a dedicated fan of Stranger Things, I am beyond excited about the upcoming Season 5, and the potential return of Robert Englund’s character, Victor Creel. His brief but pivotal role in Season 4 has left me eagerly anticipating what his life experience could bring to the table in the final battle against Vecna.

In the upcoming fifth season of “Stranger Things,” it appears that the long-anticipated showdown between Vecna and Eleven is imminent. While it’s been suggested that Eleven might be the key to defeating Vecna, there’s a secondary character whose part in the story could prove crucial for his eventual downfall. Although he had a minor role in Season 4, Robert Englund’s Victor Creel was the only survivor of the grisly Creel family massacre. Given his familial connection to Henry, it wouldn’t be unexpected for the Duffer brothers to reintroduce Victor into the plot more significantly this time, perhaps giving him a more central role.

1959 saw Victor Creel admitting to the murder of his wife Virginia and daughter Alice, while also accepting responsibility for leaving his son Henry in a coma. In the year 1986, during Season 4’s timeline, Victor Creel has spent three decades behind bars, insisting he had no hand in the Creel family murders, instead blaming some supernatural entity. Robin and Nancy disguise themselves as students researching serial killers for a thesis, to gain access to Victor Creel. He reveals to them that listening to music can protect one from Vecna’s curse, which is how Max Mayfield manages to avoid him.

What Happens to Victor Creel in Stranger Things?

Following Victor Creel’s imprisonment and falsely accused for the murders of his wife and daughter in 1959, he spent nearly three decades confined at Pennhurst Mental Hospital. During this time, driven by a desperate desire to reunite with his deceased family, Victor attempted suicide by gouging out his own eyes. This attempt ended in failure, leaving him permanently blind. In Hawkins, where Victor was thought to be the culprit behind these killings, he earned the chilling moniker of ‘the boogeyman’ – a sinister figure that residents like Wayne Munson, Eddie Munson’s uncle, grew as familiar with as Michael Myers became to the citizens of Haddonfield.

Following their meeting with Victor Creel, Nancy and Robin find out that it was the tune “Dream a Little Dream of Me” which saved Victor from a grisly fate in Victor’s case. This was instrumental in understanding how to stop Vecna and save Max, who had progressed deep into Vecna’s curse. However, Victor is absent throughout the storyline, but during an episode where Vecna momentarily takes control of Nancy Wheeler’s consciousness, Vecna reveals this information within his mindscape to Nancy. This is how she learns that Vecna was actually a much older and disfigured version of Henry Creel, which she discovers later on.

Although Robert Englund’s character, Victor Creel, had minimal screentime, he turned out to be incredibly beneficial to the Hawkins group. They managed to save Max from Vecna’s imminent fury by playing Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill.” It was Victor’s understanding of how he survived Henry’s initial assault that effectively postponed Max’s fate, allowing her a few more days before Vecna would reappear to take her life. While Victor Creel’s role in Season 4 could have been merely a way to incorporate horror icon Robert Englund, Victor’s crucial insights into surviving Vecna proved to be advantageous for the Hawkins gang, as they bravely confronted him.

If Max hadn’t made it out alive from her battle against Vecna within his mental lair, the cast of ‘Stranger Things’ wouldn’t have been able to set up a complex trap for Vecna using his intense desire to incorporate Max into his group. By using Max as bait, Steve, Nancy, and Robin managed to infiltrate the old Creel House and confront Vecna’s physical form, while he simultaneously clashed with Eleven and Max within his mental lair. Considering Victor’s direct encounter with Vecna during Season 4 and his survival, it seems reasonable to assume that he will take on a more significant role in the final season when Vecna seeks revenge.

As a seasoned fan of the Stranger Things series and someone who has closely followed the characters’ development over the years, I am confident that Eleven holds a significant advantage against Vecna. Firstly, Victor’s unique bond with Henry as his father gives him an intuitive edge, which could prove crucial in their confrontation. Moreover, what makes Eleven stand out is her role as the only known survivor of Vecna, aside from technically Max, whom she revived.

In future Season 5, Victor Creel could potentially be an ally in the battle against Vecna. Moreover, as Stranger Things has yet to fully address many character deaths, helping to defeat Vecna might offer Victor some solace regarding his late family members. If this were to happen, Victor’s storyline would find resolution, but it’s also possible that Victor Creel’s role in Season 4 was just a brief appearance by Robert Englund.
