This surprisingly great Arthurian Elder Scrolls clone just got a huge update that adds new game plus, extra dungeons, and tons more loot

Among the unexpected hits of 2025, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon stands out. This role-playing game developed by Questline offers an Elder Scrolls-style interpretation of Arthurian legend, allowing players to traverse a battered and war-ravaged Avalon under the spectral guidance of King Arthur himself.

In a review for Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, Sam Desatoff noted that despite some minor flaws, the game’s unique setting and captivating storylines were compelling. He praised the characters, many of whom offer intriguing side quests that deepen the main narrative, and added that these characters can be quite humorous, with a variety of amusing scenarios such as helping a nobleman fake his death to escape an unhappy marriage, discovering the hideout of a zombie chef seeking the perfect meal, and assisting a woman who accidentally transformed her husband into a pig.

Questline has updated Tainted Grail sporadically since launch. But the latest patch—v1.1—is by far the biggest yet. Not only does it squash a vast array of bugs nibbling at the RPG’s underbelly, but it also adds several major features and a bunch of new locations for players to explore.

The latest news reveals an exciting feature called “New Game Plus”, where you get another chance to play the game with a twist. You can replay it while exploring various options or, similar to some of us, stick to familiar decisions. In this version, you’ll retain much of the gear from your initial completion, but the enemies will be noticeably harder. Additionally, armor effectiveness decreases with each “New Game Plus” level, encouraging reliance on your own abilities as the game progresses.

Additional innovations include an option for first-person players to mimic head movements, often referred to as nodding, and a feature called “transformation system” that allows you to alter the aesthetic of items by swapping them with visually similar items you’ve encountered previously. Essentially, this means if you admire the statistics of a weapon or armor set but dislike its appearance, you can exchange its visual design with another.

Apart from these enhancements, the latest update introduces three fresh dungeons, six additional quests, and over a dozen extra items such as brand-new weapons and armor sets. Furthermore, it optimizes many existing missions and locations for improved gameplay. Notably, the patch has significantly revamped Tainted Grail’s third act, introducing three new caves to delve into, and distributing substantially more loot to make exploration in this final part of the tale more enticing.

The 1.1 update is available now. As is fashionable with big updates like this, Questline has also put Tainted Grail on sale at a 20% discount for the next few days. This reduces the price to $36 (£30), which ain’t bad for a modern RPG. The discount runs until September 16.

2021 has been an unexpectedly fantastic year for Elder Scrolls enthusiasts, despite The Elder Scrolls 6 still being quite some time from release. Besides the debut of Oblivion Remastered, this year saw Tainted Grail and Avowed deliver substantial doses of RPG gameplay related to Elder Scrolls on PC. Additionally, the modding community has been buzzing with activity. For instance, Tamriel Rebuilt is offering a massive new area in Morrowind for exploration, and fan-created Oblivion remake Skyblivion is preparing for a release later this year; however, there are doubts about its plans as a former developer on the project has expressed skepticism.
