Despite the recent release of *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, many of its features – including Mega Evolutions, the battle system, and story elements – were revealed over the past year. While most details surfaced with early copies of the game or through data mining, some, like the 26 new Mega Evolutions, were known for a while. The first glimpse of Mega Dragonite in July 2025 essentially confirmed these leaks, as its appearance and description perfectly matched what had been reported. Now that *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* is available, players are starting to build their teams, and Starmie is a Pokemon worth considering.
Mega Starmie is a surprisingly powerful Mega Evolution in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, despite its design being quite similar to the original Starmie. While some Mega Evolutions, like Mega Zygarde, boast incredibly high Special Attack, *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* focuses more on Speed. Mega Starmie excels in this area, possessing exceptional Speed and a total base stat of 660 – a number comparable to powerful pseudo-Legendary and even some Legendary Pokemon. This combination makes it the strongest Mega Evolution currently available in the game, and here’s why.
- Mega Starmie has one of the highest BST of new Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, with 660, whereas the next highest are Mega Dragonite’s 700 and Mega Zygarde’s 778.
- While Staryu is not among the Wild Zone 1 Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it’s still fairly early into the game, so players can use Starmie very soon.
- Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s real-time battles favor Speed a lot due to its ability to recharge cooldowns faster and dodge more often, and Mega Starmie has 120 base Speed.
- Unlike most other Pokemon, Mega Starmie has +140 to its BST, whereas the norm is 100.
- Mega Starmie has access to multiple great offensive moves, and it’s a powerful attacker.
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, you can find Alpha Staryu at night in the Wild Zone 2 – it will be level 31. To evolve it into Starmie, head to Lumiose City and purchase a Water Stone at the Stone Emporium for 3,000 Poke Gold. After defeating Rogue Mega Starmie, you’ll be able to obtain Starminite.
The Best New Pokemon Legends: Z-A Mega Evolution is Already Clear
Mega Starmie in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* has a much higher base stat total – 660 compared to the original’s 520 – because it usually possesses the Huge Power Ability. Since *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* removed Abilities, the developers gave all Pokemon that previously had Huge Power a +40 boost to their Attack stat instead. Mega Mawile is another example of a Pokemon that received this change.
Stat Name | Starmie | Mega Starmie |
HP | 60 | 60 |
Attack | 75 | 140 |
Defense | 85 | 105 |
Sp. Attack | 100 | 130 |
Sp. Defense | 85 | 105 |
Speed | 115 | 120 |

With its high Speed, Attack, and Special Attack stats (120, 140, and 130 respectively), Mega Starmie is a flexible attacker capable of using both physical and special moves. It gains access to powerful physical attacks like Aqua Jet, Liquidation, and Zen Headbutt, and can further boost its offensive power with Bulk Up. Mega Starmie also learns excellent moves for its Water and Psychic typing, including Psychic, Surf, Hydro Pump, and Water Pulse, along with a variety of other coverage options.
- Power Gem (Rock – strong against Flying, Bug, Fire, and Ice)
- Ice Beam, Blizzard, Icy Wind (Ice – strong against Flying, Ground, Grass, and Dragon)
- Thunderbolt, Thunder Wave, Thunder (Electric – strong against Flying and Water)
- Flash Cannon (Steel – strong against Rock, Ice, and Fairy)
- Dazzling Gleam (Fairy – strong against Fighting, Dragon, and Dark)
Why Mega Starmie is Officially The Best New Mega in PLZA
In *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, Mega Starmie has the potential to be a very powerful and fast attacker, capable of overcoming Pokemon it normally would be weak against. Both Starmie and its Mega Evolution share weaknesses to Bug, Ghost, Grass, Electric, and Dark types, stemming from their Water/Psychic typing. The one type they consistently struggle against is Ghost.
How Mega Starmie Compares to Other Pokemon Legends: Z-A Mega Evolutions
Mega Starmie is currently the strongest Mega Evolution in the game. It’s easy to obtain, boasts excellent moves and coverage, has incredibly high stats, and recovers from moves quickly. While future updates, like those planned for *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* with Mega Zygarde, might eventually surpass it, it’s likely to remain dominant for quite some time.
Mega Starmie is incredibly powerful, boasting exceptional Attack, Special Attack, and Speed, along with a diverse range of moves it can learn. Its main weaknesses are relatively low HP and a limited number of moves it can equip – only four. This means carefully selecting the right moves is essential to maximize its potential.
