As a lifelong Sonic the Hedgehog fanatic who’s been riding this rollercoaster of excitement since the 90’s, I can confidently say that this year has been nothing short of a dream come true! From the cinematic masterpiece of Sonic 2 to the immersive world of Sonic Frontiers, it feels like Sega is pulling out all the stops for us fans.
2024 has been a fantastic year for enthusiasts of Sonic the Hedgehog, as it’s been all about Shadow the Hedgehog! The last three years have been filled with numerous surprises. In 2022, we saw the theater release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the fastest-selling 3D game in the series, Sonic Frontiers. Throughout 2023, fans were kept busy with DLC for Sonic Frontiers and a 2D co-op platformer, Sonic Superstars. Now, this year has been dedicated to Shadow the Hedgehog, even featuring his own game in the title Sonic X Shadow Generations.
It’s astonishing to see the extent Sega has gone in backing Shadow during his “Fearless: Year of Shadow” promotion, including having him promote the upcoming Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds game without any hint of Sonic the Hedgehog appearing in its promotional trailer. The year for Shadow is far from over, as there are still many releases planned before the end of 2024. In fact, this week alone is jam-packed with content that is sure to delight all Sonic fans.
Sonic Fans Have Something New Coming Out Over the Next Few Days
December 18 Marks Shadow’s Arrival in Sonic Dream Team
Initially, Sonic Dream Team seemed like a casual, light-hearted platform game. However, since its release, it has been consistently updated, resulting in a richer, more challenging experience for players. As of December 18th, Shadow, who was previously limited in his appearances, will be playable in Sonic Dream Team. Notably, he will exhibit his signature Chaos Control and Chaos Shift abilities, setting him apart from the other six characters currently available.
In Sonic Dream Team, Shadow will initially only be playable within the daily Tails’ Challenges mode. This mode offers three challenges each day that reward players with experience points, moving them along a progress track. However, Shadow has his own unique rewards associated with him, which include additional music and other bonuses.
IDW Publishing’s Sonic Riders Comic Arc Comes to a Close on December 18
On December 18th, IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog issue number 75 is set to be released, marking the end of the current storyline and coming in a larger-than-usual format. If you’re a fan of the Sonic Riders series and haven’t been following IDW comics yet, now would be an excellent time to get caught up. This story arc is heavily influenced by the series, with distinctive costumes and thrilling races. Each character in this issue has a crucial part to play, as their individual storylines converge towards a climax that could alter the direction of the story moving forward. To avoid missing out on issue 75, devoted fans should make sure they don’t miss it!
December 19 and December 20 Bring Sonic and Shadow to the Silver Screen
As a die-hard Sonic fan, it feels like all the hype and anticipation this year has been leading up to the big screen debut of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”! This third installment in the Sonic series seems to be an adaptation of everyone’s beloved “Sonic Adventure 2,” which is enough to make any fan’s heart race. If you’re eager to catch a glimpse of Sonic on the big screen, mark your calendars for December 19th! Some theaters like AMC and Regal are hosting a special “Fan Event” where tickets go on sale as early as 3 PM that day. However, if you don’t have an AMC or Regal theater nearby, be sure to check with your local cinema – some locations may still offer viewings on the 19th later in the day. If all else fails, you can always catch the movie on December 20th as scheduled. Can’t wait!
The Sonic Series Isn’t Stopping Anytime Soon
For Sonic enthusiasts, the upcoming times promise even more thrills, but exactly when these treats will arrive is still uncertain. The hint is strong that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 might unveil a new character later this month, based on recent teasers. Meanwhile, Sonic Rumble is gearing up for a global launch sooner rather than later. Furthermore, there’s at least one game in store for fans before we enter 2025. Given the flurry of releases in recent years, it’s reasonable to expect that the surprises will keep rolling in beyond next year. So, stay tuned and hang on tight as Sonic Team and Sega prepare to reveal more about the blue blur’s future escapades!
