Many Pokémon players fondly remember older games like Pokémon Yellow and Crystal, which felt like complete, polished experiences. These games followed Pokémon Red and Green, the very first titles released on the original Game Boy. After the initial success, Game Freak and Nintendo continued to release updated versions, but they mostly focused on minor improvements while keeping the core gameplay the same.
Since the release of the Nintendo Switch, Game Freak has been using downloadable content (DLC) to add new features and stories to Pokémon games while players wait for completely new versions. This started with Pokémon Sword and Shield, and has continued in later games. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet received an expansion in 2023, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A added the Mega Dimension DLC in December 2025.
Where Have the Pokemon “Definitive Editions” Gone?
A recent discussion on Reddit highlighted fans’ disappointment that Nintendo seems to have stopped making enhanced or “definitive” versions of their Pokemon games after the Switch. This practice started with the original Pokemon Red and Green, followed by Pokemon Blue with small improvements, and then Pokemon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition. Many fans consider Pokemon Yellow to be the best version of the first generation, appealing to both longtime players and new ones. It included references to the popular Pokemon anime and allowed players to obtain all three starter Pokemon—Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle—without trading. This approach continued for years, with games like Pokemon Crystal becoming fan favorites and considered among the best in the series.
Starting with Pokemon Black and White, Game Freak and The Pokemon Company began trying new things with versions released during a generation. Instead of a fully updated edition, they made direct sequels set in the same Unova region, but with a new story. Pokemon X and Y hinted at a third version that was ultimately never released. Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon significantly expanded on Sun and Moon with new content and changes, but kept the same core story. These proved to be the last truly definitive editions for any Pokemon generation.
Although many Pokémon fans long for complete, standalone games, offering downloadable content (DLC) actually makes a lot of sense. DLC is much more affordable than buying an entirely new game. Plus, it lets players continue playing with their current Pokémon team instead of having to start a new game from the beginning. For example, if the Episode RR content from Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon had been released as DLC, players wouldn’t have had to replay the original Sun and Moon story to experience it.

It’s unlikely we’ll see complete, definitive versions of Pokémon games like we used to. While longtime fans might miss them, it’s probably good the series is evolving. There’s a rumor that Pokémon Emerald, along with Ruby and Sapphire, could be coming to the Nintendo Switch, which would give new players a chance to experience those older games. While Nintendo hasn’t confirmed anything yet, the success of the FireRed and LeafGreen remakes suggests this is a real possibility.
