Various types of video games exist, each with its unique form and reliability. Some adhere strictly to genres, while others defy categorization and offer a mix of experiences. Threefold Recital, for instance, is challenging to classify by genre standards. It embodies elements of platforming, storytelling, detective work, and light puzzles. This colorful 2D adventure with animal characters delivers more than anticipated. The question isn’t so much about labeling it but rather whether it’s enjoyable, and for the most part, I found it to be; however, it’s quite distinct from other games I’ve experienced.
As a gamer immersed in this captivating world, I find myself thrust into a tale that begins with visuals and text depicting the gathering of three companions, each harboring distinct spiritual convictions. Unbeknownst to them, these deep-rooted debates echoed through the woods, reaching the ears of forest dwellers. Over time, these enlightened thoughts seeped into the minds of these creatures, transforming them into beings reminiscent of humans.
Now, numerous generations have passed, and these evolved entities have constructed their own civilization, replete with districts for various social classes and a familiar strain of inequality – much like our own world. The Threefold Recital chronicles the lives of three friends residing in this society, their independent journeys, and the unavoidable convergence that follows.
Following an initial chapter that introduces all characters, you’ll find yourself starting your journey as Triratna, the wolf monk. Engaging in routine activities, he is unjustly imprisoned by a wealthy individual for a crime he didn’t commit. With help from an unexpected companion and his unique ability to perceive karmic threads (a magical rope connecting objects and people), he must clear his name. This quest will lead him to investigate the captor’s mansion, solve mysteries, and conquer simple puzzles involving ropes.
As a captivated admirer, I’m eagerly anticipating the arrival of Taiqing, the enigmatic fox priest. He’s been roped in by the authorities to scrutinize some questionable health supplements. His abilities are rooted in transmutation, and he has an uncanny knack for slipping between dimensions, much like a piece of origami unfolding itself. It’s an oddball scenario, but mostly, you’ll be engaged in the familiar pursuit of unraveling mysteries by gathering evidence, regardless of the realm you find yourself traversing.
In Threefold Recital, the central character is Transia – an artist who specializes in snakes, serving as a mentor to the daughter of a peculiar wealthy family residing in an enigmatic old theater. As events unravel, it becomes clear that this seemingly ordinary setting hides peril. To navigate these hazards, you’ll need to utilize Transia’s abilities to traverse paintings and camouflage herself using body paint. Initially, each situation appears unrelated; however, they all eventually converge around a crucial figure that requires investigation. This necessitates an alliance among friends and the integration of their powers in a climactic, thrilling part of the game.
Though it may have occasional leaps in its structure, Threefold Recital is essentially a story-driven game disguised as a platformer. It delves into profound subjects such as the essence of life, coping with mortality, and numerous tragic events. At times, the writing and verbosity of the game can be less effective, but it certainly tackles intriguing themes without a doubt.
In addition to exploring Threefold Recital’s main aspects, there are other elements worth delving into. For instance, in each chapter of the game, you’ll receive extra currency for embodying your character or completing additional tasks. This currency can be used across chapters to operate a gacha machine that unlocks items for a fascinating gallery located within the hub area. I found it quite engaging to fill this gallery with various character artwork and audio tracks.
In essence, while Threefold Recital sounds intriguing as a concept for a game in theory, the slow tempo and excessive dialogue somewhat diminish its appeal. The game primarily focuses on mystery-solving, but the solutions to major puzzles are often handed to you rather than requiring active problem-solving or critical thinking. This is disheartening because all the components of an excellent game seem to be present; however, they don’t quite coalesce effectively as one might hope.
Threefold Recital offers a captivating storyline with thought-provoking concepts, yet its flow and certain sections of text may not meet expectations. Regardless, for those seeking a unique gaming experience that delves into profound topics, this is the place to be. You’ll embark on the peculiar journeys of Triratna, Taiqing, and Transia and are likely to enjoy the ride in this unusual tale.
