Through the Fringe of Madness Quest Walkthrough – Oblivion Remastered

Following your journey past the Strange Door within Oblivion Remastered and starting the Shivering Isles DLC, you’ll come across a challenge that may leave some players scratching their heads. This obstacle is none other than the Gatekeeper at the Gates of Madness. Upon entering the Shivering Isles, there isn’t much in the way of directions to help you along. If you happen to meet the Gatekeeper solo, you’ll quickly realize it’s invulnerable to your attacks. This guide will walk you through slaying the Gatekeeper in Oblivion Remastered and moving beyond the Gates of Madness.

How to Pass the Gatekeeper in Oblivion Remastered

Visit Passwall:

Upon stepping foot on the Shivering Isles for the first time, you’ll arrive at a place called The Fringe. This area isn’t particularly bustling, but it is inhabited by some folk who have chosen to call it home. They congregate in a quaint village known as Passwall. Despite the allure of the Gates of Madness that many players might rush towards, assuming they can just walk through, there’s no compelling reason to do so initially. Instead, your initial destination should be Passwall.

In Passwall, seek out Shelden, who likes to call himself the Mayor of Passwall. He’s having a chat with a Dark Elf called Felas Sarandas in the town square. Engaging them in conversation will uncover details about the Gatekeeper and a band of adventurers preparing to traverse the Gates of Madness. Once you’ve spoken with them, both Shelden and Felas will head towards the Gates of Madness. Keep tabs on their movements.

Watch the “Battle”:

At the entrance of the Madness Fortress, you’ll encounter a band of heavily armed explorers preparing to confront the Gate Guardian. Engaging in conversation with Shelden will instigate the battle. Regrettably, this entire team of adventurers will meet their demise at the hands of the Gatekeeper.

In simpler terms, if you encounter a recurring problem at the Gates of Madness, consider standing patiently for an hour if you choose not to confront the Gatekeeper directly. This should help progress your quest.

After all the adventurers have met their end, approach Shelden once more. He’ll disclose that it’s Jayred Ice-Veins who intends to take down the Gatekeeper.

Gardens of Flesh and Bone:

To locate Jayred Ice-Veins, trace your way back to Passwall, then search for a shabby building near the pond’s edge. Enter the building and converse with Jayred. He will inform you that your destination is the Gardens of Bone and Flesh.

Accompany Jayred as you both climb the hill towards the garden area. Unlock the fairly simple gate with a lockpick when you reach it. Then, proceed into the central courtyard and engage in conversation with the skeleton guarding the entrance.

At the Gardens of Flesh and Bone, there might be an additional issue. If Jayred Ice-Veins lingers without taking any action upon entering via the gate, simply wait for about an hour, and the quest should progress normally.

Following your encounter with the skeleton, a vast horde of Shambles will assault you next. Individually, they aren’t much of a threat, but their collective strength makes them dangerous. It’s advisable to be well-prepared before engaging. Once the Shambles have been defeated, Jayred will utilize the Gatekeeper Skeleton to craft arrows. After waiting for three hours, return to Jayred at his residence to claim your newly made arrows.

Defeat the Gatekeeper:

With the Gatekeeper Bone Arrows now in your possession, make your way back to the Gatekeeper situated at the Gates of Madness. For a smoother and quicker elimination of the Gatekeeper, consider teaming up with Jayred when he launches an attack.

After he dies, loot his body to get the keys to both Mania and Dementia.

How to Complete Through the Fringe of Madness – Oblivion Remastered

After overcoming the Gatekeeper, Haskill will converse with you automatically. He’ll let you know that Sheogorath is eager to chat in his palace. You may choose to enter either the Gate of Madness or the Gate of Insanity to reach the palace. The Gate of Madness might be the more straightforward route.

Traverse the Shivering Isles towards Bliss, then step inside the royal palace where you’ll find Sheogorath. Converse with him to finish “The Edge of Madness Quest.
