In Metroid Prime 4, players will discover three different beam attacks, and the Thunder Beam is the final one they’ll unlock. This beam not only destroys specific Thunder Blockers, but also activates various inactive objects throughout the game. Because of this, the Thunder Beam is essential for completing Metroid Prime 4, and this guide will show you how to get it.
If you’re trying to avoid spoilers, just be aware that you can’t get the Thunder Shot until you’ve beaten the final boss in Flare Pool.
Thunder Chip Location in Metroid Prime 4
Pre-Requisites
Like other elemental abilities in Metroid Prime 4, the Thunder Shot becomes available once you find its corresponding chip. To get the Thunder Chip, players first need to complete these steps:
- Unlock Vi-O-La IC Mode in Volt Forge. This is possible after defeating Keratos in the Ice Belt and unlocking Psychic Boost Ball.
- Use Vi-O-La IC Mode to cross the lava pool and enter the Flare Pool facility. Work through this area and defeat Phenoros to earn Psychic Grapple.
Volt Forge
Once you’ve unlocked Psychic Grapple, head back to Volt Forge and go down through Tower 1 until you find the Collapsed Catwalk. You’ll know you’re in the right place because the area beyond it will appear as unexplored on your map. The Collapsed Catwalk itself is also marked on the previous map to help you find it.

After you get to the Collapsed Catwalk, use your Psychic Grapple to swing across the room. Then, just follow the path until you reach a room full of Lamorn power cells. On the west side, you’ll find a damaged power cell. Scan its broken cover and use the Grapple Lasso to remove it. This will reveal the Thunder Chip, which you can then pick up.
Players should be prepared for a boss battle that occurs in the room with the Thunder Chip.
What to Do With Thunder Chip in Metroid Prime 4
Once you have the Thunder Chip, return to Myles in Fury Green. He’ll turn it into Thunder Shot, just like he did with Ice Shot and Fire Shot. Once created, Thunder Shot will automatically be set to your d-pad for easy access.
Shortly after meeting Myles in Metroid Prime 4, you’ll encounter a green elemental lock puzzle. This is a perfect spot to test out the Thunder Shot ability.
