As a long-time Marvel fan who’s seen my fair share of comic books and movies, I can’t help but be thrilled about the upcoming Thunderbolts movie. The combination of former villains and new characters like Sentry has me on the edge of my seat!

I can hardly contain my excitement as a fellow gamer and Marvel fan! Next summer, I’m all geared up for the thrilling debut of the new team, the Thunderbolts. This film promises to bring back some of Marvel Studios’ lesser-known baddies, like the Winter Soldier, Ghost, and US Agent. But that’s not all! In addition to reintroducing these villains, the Thunderbolts movie is set to introduce a fresh face to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Sentry, portrayed by Lewis Pullman. As of now, Marvel Studios isn’t spilling the beans about Pullman’s character in the film, only revealing that he goes by the name Bill. I can hardly wait to see how this new addition fits into the Marvel universe!

Although the studio is keeping quiet about Sentry’s appearance, his potential inclusion could offer a significant turn in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Readers familiar with the comics know that Sentry harbors a malevolent alter ego called the Void. Interestingly, the term “Void” is also used for the space between universes, as depicted in shows like Loki and Deadpool & Wolverine. Consequently, Thunderbolts could establish a connection between these realms that might lead to various timelines and versions of Sentry, a classic comic book character.

Breaking Down Sentry in Marvel Comics

In the comic books, Robert Reynolds, also known as Sentry, ranks among the world’s most powerful superheroes. His origins trace back to Project Sentry, initiated in March 1947 in West Virginia, which aimed to replicate the Super Soldier Serum and amplify its effects exponentially. Unfortunately, the project lost leadership and ultimately failed. However, years later, Reynolds managed to steal a vial of the altered serum from one of his high school professors who was associated with the program. Unaware of the drug’s potency, he drank it without hesitation, gaining incredible solar-powered abilities. Yet, there is a drawback: before consuming the serum, Reynolds had schizophrenia and anxiety issues, which resulted in him developing an evil persona known as the Void. Despite finding a way to coexist with this other self, the two personas occasionally split apart and become unaware of each other’s existence. Government officials eventually discover that Reynolds took the serum, leading them to pursue him for further testing at the facility. Many personnel at the facility attempt to kill him, but Reynolds remains oblivious to their intentions.

Sentry, a Marvel superhero, possesses extraordinary physical abilities including immense strength, swiftness, intelligence, invincibility, heightened senses, energy manipulation, and flight. His mental well-being significantly influences his power level – when he is mentally sound, he’s virtually unbeatable; but when unstable, his powers diminish. This narrative element could potentially link Sentry to the void portrayed in both Loki and Deadpool & Wolverine series. In the Thunderbolts movie trailer, Sentry appears to be following a similar origin story, having been confined in a facility alongside other heroes, and seemingly invulnerable to gunfire. However, it remains to be seen how Marvel Studios will depict his mental illness and its effect on his powers in the film.

Thunderbolts*: How the Movie Can Handle the Sentry & Void Twist

In the realm of Marvel Studios, I find myself captivated by the creation of an alternate dimension they call the Void, showcased in films like “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Loki.” This desolate land harbors characters living outside the traditional timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such as Channing Tatum’s Gambit. As for Sentry/Reynolds, I believe Marvel Studios needs to tread carefully when addressing his Void persona. Connecting this malevolent aspect with the void we’ve already encountered on screen could prove insightful.

Although the exact challenges awaiting the team in Thunderbolts remain uncertain, the trailer suggests that “Bob” will play a significant part in the movie, possibly putting his fellow team members in conflict with him. Initially appearing unsure and vulnerable in the trailer, Bob later walks away unscathed after being shot at. Later scenes depict the teams fleeing in a car, and though it seems like Bucky is targeting his comrades, it’s more likely he’s aiming at Bob. It’s possible that the film will explore his Void persona; let’s hope it successfully links the physical manifestation of Void to Sentry’s villainous side.

Thunderbolts* is set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
