Time Cut On Netflix Was A Better Horror Movie Than I Expected

As someone who grew up in the early 2000s and has always had a soft spot for horror films, I must say that Netflix’s “Time Cut” was a delightful surprise! The nostalgic throwback to my teenage years with crop tops, Ugg boots, and catchy tunes like Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. But let’s not forget the real heart of this movie: the charming, endearing, and sweet characters that you can’t help but root for!

The Netflix horror movie “Time Cut” follows science-minded teenager Lucy Field (Madison Bailey), who’s grown up hearing about her sister Lucy’s (Antonia Gentry) grisly death by the Sweetly Slasher in 2003. In an attempt to correct this tragic event, Lucy travels back to 2003 and discovers valuable lessons along the way.

Despite my initial doubts about the time travel concept in this film, I found myself really enjoying “Time Cut”. I believe it’s an excellent pick for anyone who enjoys horror movies, intriguing time travel narratives, or reminiscing about the 2000s. Here’s why Time Cut was a delight to watch: It offers a unique blend of suspense, nostalgia, and innovative storytelling that makes it a must-watch for fans of the horror genre as Halloween comes to an end.

Why I Loved The Netflix Horror Movie Time Cut

Time Cut On Netflix Was A Better Horror Movie Than I Expected

I was delightfully taken aback by the Netflix horror film “Time Cut” as I found Lucy, Summer, and Quinn (played by Griffin Gluck) to be captivating, lovable, and heartwarming personalities. They connect because they all acknowledge their feelings of loneliness, insecurity, and being misunderstood. Lucy has been seeking someone who appreciates her since she’s been overshadowed by her sister’s tragic and unsettling death, while Quinn yearns for Summer and questions if he’ll ever find a true friend. Although a chilling murderer lurks throughout the story, the primary focus is on these three engrossing characters.

Additionally, it was great to see that the film “Time Cut” includes an LGBTQ+ romantic tale within its horror narrative, as it’s crucial for this underrepresented group to have their stories told. In the movie, Summer and Emmy (portrayed by Megan Best) share a deep love, but Summer kept their relationship hidden. The heart-wrenching letter written by Emmy reveals her anguish over this secret. What I loved about “Time Cut” is that it presents a compelling love story alongside its horror elements, and I’m thrilled that Lucy saves Summer in the end, allowing Summer and Emmy to be together.

In addition, the mid-2000s ambiance of Time Cut struck me as delightfully nostalgic. The portrayal of crop tops, Ugg boots, and the catchy tunes like “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne and “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton brought back memories. I found it amusing when Lucy was taken aback by the fashion in her high school in 2003. Moreover, incorporating Hilary Duff’s song “So Yesterday” in that scene seemed fitting, as it encapsulated the essence of this era. Overall, Time Cut beautifully and faithfully captured the spirit of this time period. This movie truly embraces its setting and atmosphere.

Initially, I was hesitant about the way Time Cut approached time travel, as it often veers into the realm of corniness and illogicality. However, I appreciate how Quinn tackles paradoxes in the narrative. Just like the mind-blowing finale of The Butterfly Effect demonstrated, a person can’t change one aspect of their past without causing chaos elsewhere. What struck me was Lucy’s courage and selflessness when she chose to save Summer instead of herself.

In simpler terms, despite the somewhat cheesy conclusion of Time Cut, some may find it hard to believe Lucy can remain in 2003. However, I believe it’s fine to appreciate this harmonious ending and be grateful that Summer and Lucy finally have the sisterly bond they couldn’t before.

What Did Time Cut’s Director Hannah Macpherson Say About The Movie?

In various conversations, Director Hannah Macpherson has discussed the central themes of Time Cut, particularly focusing on the emotional voyage undertaken by characters Lucy and Summer. During an interview with Comingsoon.net, she expressed her fondness for the sibling bond in the script, penned by Michael Kennedy, adding that this was one aspect that stood out to her.

The narrative reminded me of a heart-wrenching tale about two siblings, separated by time and conflict. Watching their reunion and each grappling with the question of what they’d give up for the other was truly heartbreaking.

Macpherson pointed out that the hardships some families unfortunately face rarely form the plot of a slasher movie, which is why they appreciate the series Time Cut so much. Indeed, while there are countless excellent slasher films, they tend to concentrate on more surface-level aspects of the protagonist’s life. Unlike movies like Scream and Halloween, which delve into the trauma of being a final girl, Time Cut explores what happens when someone learns that their entire understanding of their life was false. For instance, although Lucy must have suspected that her parents chose to have her because they were grieving the loss of their daughter, she is stunned to discover that her mom and dad only wanted one child. She has to grapple with the reality that she wouldn’t be here if not for Summer’s tragic and dark demise. That’s definitely a difficult truth to accept.

Having finished “Time Cut” on Netflix, I’m eager to discover more horror films penned by Michael Kennedy and learn about the upcoming ventures of Hannah Macpherson.
