Times Resident Evil Characters Narrowly Avoided Death

Key Takeaways

  • Jill Valentine’s close encounter with Nemesis in Resident Evil 3 led to her being infected.
  • Claire Redfield’s survival in Resident Evil 2 was credited to Dr. Birkin intercepting Mr. X before he could harm her.
  • Moira Burton from Resident Evil: Revelations 2 survived due to her choice to defeat Neil and save Natalia in the good ending.

As a long-time fan of the Resident Evil series, I must say that the lives of these characters are nothing short of extraordinary! From Parker Luciani’s narrow escape thanks to his old friend Raymond, to Ethan Winters’ multiple brushes with death and subsequent resurrection, it’s clear that survival in this world is not for the faint-hearted.

In the world of Resident Evil, danger lurks in every nook and cranny, yet the characters sometimes act rashly and impulsively. This combination often leads to situations where Resident Evil’s protagonists barely cheat death. Over nearly three decades, the Resident Evil series has seen more narrow escapes than is safe, especially for characters who have dodged bio-organic weapons, explosions, superhumans, and even falls from high, precarious edges.

It’s astounding that certain members of the Resident Evil cast have managed to survive for so long. No matter how many adversaries they face or how precarious their situations, Capcom seems determined not to let them fade away. Here are some instances where Resident Evil characters narrowly escaped death and went on to share their harrowing experiences.

8 Jill Valentine Gets Infected By Nemesis (Resident Evil 3)

Carlos Procures An Antidote Just In Time to Save Jill’s Life

Times Resident Evil Characters Narrowly Avoided Death

Jill Valentine has survived numerous harrowing experiences, including being chased, beaten, explosions, mind control, and the Raccoon City disaster. However, in Resident Evil 3, Jill Valentine encountered her toughest adversary yet – Umbrella’s massive Bio-Organic Weapon, Nemesis, a monstrous, hulking humanoid designed to eliminate all remaining S.T.A.R.S. members in Raccoon City. When Nemesis kills Brad Vickers, one of Alpha Team’s pilots, Jill is the last S.T.A.R.S. member standing, making her the primary target for Nemesis who relentlessly pursues her.

In the heat of a Resident Evil battle, I found myself pinned under a metallic barrier as Nemesis snatched my leg, dragging me closer. With a swift move, I managed to shatter the gate by aiming for and severing the chain with a precise shot, causing Nemesis’ arm to fall away. Unfortunately, it retaliated by piercing me in the shoulder with a spiky projection, infecting me with the T-Virus. But as any diehard Resident Evil fan knows, this was supposed to be my demise – the virus would eventually turn me into one of those mindless zombies. Yet, Carlos bravely carried me to the hospital in search of Dr. Bard. Miraculously, he found an antidote on his own and administered it to me, saving my life.

7 The Spencer Mansion Incident (Resident Evil 5)

Jill Almost Takes Out Herself And Wesker

Times Resident Evil Characters Narrowly Avoided Death

It’s not unexpected that Jill Valentine makes two appearances, given her history of hardship and survival. In Resident Evil 5, after Raccoon City, Jill and Chris break into the Spencer Mansion to interrogate Oswell E. Spencer about Albert Wesker’s location. They find Spencer dead and Wesker gazing out a large window overlooking the cliffside in the study. A battle erupts, leaving Chris and Jill unable to match Wesker’s speed and strength. Jill is knocked unconscious and seemingly out of commission, while Wesker effortlessly lifts Chris off the ground.

In a swift move, Jill dashes towards Wesker with incredible speed, tackling him forcefully. This action causes them both to smash through a window and plunge down the cliffside. As we learn from the main story of Resident Evil 5, Jill managed to survive the fall somehow, possibly using Wesker’s enhanced body as a buffer. Afterward, he transports her to the nearby Tricell facility, where he places her in cryostasis, keeping her on the brink of death. The dormant T-Virus within her bloodstream reacts to the P30 serum during this time, granting her Wesker’s impressive strength and agility but also making her subservient to his control.

6 Claire Redfield Meets Mr. X (Resident Evil 2)

Mr. X Almost Wipes Out Claire And Sherry

Times Resident Evil Characters Narrowly Avoided Death

In the remake of Resident Evil 2, while investigating the Raccoon City Police Station, Claire puts out a fire caused by a helicopter crash. As she moves forward, the T-00 Tyrant, or Mr. X, unexpectedly shifts the wreckage aside. Though its primary mission was to retrieve the G-Virus sample from Sherry Birkin’s pendant, it also targeted Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy as secondary objectives: eliminating any survivors within the Raccoon City Police Station. In Claire’s storyline, Mr. X doesn’t catch up to her until she meets up with Sherry near the underground elevator.

In the depths below, when Claire meets up with Sherry once more, all of a sudden Mr. X breaks through the door and sets off in pursuit of them. Mr. X compels them to enter the nearby elevator. The elevator door grate started to open but was halted by Dr. William Birkin who was transforming into “G.” Birkin thrust his grotesque claws into Mr. X’s body, splitting the Tyrant in two, allowing Claire and Sherry to flee safely. However, it remains uncertain what might have transpired if Birkin hadn’t intervened at the opportune moment.

5 Moira Burton Survives The Good Ending (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Moira Survives The Collapse Of Alex’s Lab If She Kills Neil

Times Resident Evil Characters Narrowly Avoided Death

In the game Resident Evil: Revelations 2, the storylines diverge around Moira Burton, a key character who assists Claire in her mission and is the daughter of another main figure, Barry Burton. A pivotal moment comes when you confront Claire’s former superior, Neil. You have the choice to either have Claire eliminate Neil or switch to Moira, who musters courage to fire the fatal shot if Claire doesn’t.

Following Alex Wesker’s mutation and assault on Barry and Natalia, she manages to subdue Barry at the end of the boss battle and seize Natalia. In the unfavorable outcome, Alex brutally ends Natalia’s life and moves her consciousness into Natalia’s body. Conversely, in a positive turn of events, Moira miraculously survives her near-death experience, quickly firing shots at Alex to prevent her from killing Natalia. With Natalia secure, Moira escapes the island with the others when Claire arrives by helicopter to extract them.

4 Ada Wong Sacrifices Herself (Resident Evil 2)

Ada Miraculously Survives The Fall To Her Alleged Death

  • Resident Evil 2

In the game Resident Evil 2, it isn’t just Claire Redfield who faces difficulties. During Leon Kennedy’s mission, he teams up with Ada Wong to secure a G-Virus sample. However, what Leon doesn’t realize at first is that Ada isn’t an FBI agent as she claims, but rather a freelance operative working for Umbrella’s rivals. Hired to retrieve the sample, her true allegiance is revealed when Leon confronts her in the NEST laboratory. Unfortunately, Annette Birkin, who has been wounded, shoots Ada before succumbing to her injuries. As the lab begins to crumble, a piece of walkway breaks apart and Ada loses her footing. Though Leon catches her, he’s unable to pull her up safely due to a lack of proper support.

In the grim reality I faced, I accepted my fate wouldn’t let me walk away unscathed. Instead, I chose to give Leon a chance at survival by sacrificing myself. The G-Virus sample plunged into the abyss, becoming inaccessible as the NEST lab crumbled around it. To ease Leon’s burden, I let go, seemingly meeting my end. However, as disclosed in Resident Evil 4, I miraculously survived that fall. The specifics of how remain a mystery, but my trusty grappling hook may have played a crucial role in my unlikely escape.

3 Albert Wesker Falls Prey To The Tyrant (Resident Evil)

Wesker Uses An Experimental Virus To Resurrect Himself

In subsequent Resident Evil games, Albert Wesker emerges as the most powerful human adversary throughout the series. After contracting the Uroboros virus, Wesker becomes nearly indestructible (except for a few rocket launchers), causing chaos for characters like Jill, Chris, Sheva, Claire, and many more. However, it’s important to note that Albert Wesker wasn’t always the tyrannical leader depicted in Resident Evil 5 and its remake. Initially, he was a regular soldier, much like Chris and Jill, who chose to defect to Umbrella when they offered him a substantial bribe for betraying his S.T.A.R.S team members.

In the closing scenes of the initial Resident Evil, it’s disclosed that Wesker had deceived S.T.A.R.S. and was secretly working with Umbrella. He gazes in awe at a prototype Tyrant enclosed within a holding cell. Overestimating the Tyrant’s peaceful nature, Wesker suffers a fatal wound when it attacks him. However, Wesker makes a reappearance in Resident Evil – Code: Veronica, managing to cheat death due to an experimental virus that not only revived him and mended his wounds but also bestowed him with extraordinary abilities. These powers are further augmented by the Uroboros Virus in Resident Evil 5.

2 Raymond Saves Parker Luciani (Resident Evil: Revelations)

Parker’s Old Friend Spares Him From An Early Grave

Times Resident Evil Characters Narrowly Avoided Death

In the game Resident Evil: Revelations, Jill Valentine’s companion, Parker Luciani, joins her onboard the Queen Zenobia in a quest to find Chris Redfield and his partner, Jessica Sherawat. As the story unfolds, when the Queen Zenobia starts sinking and filling with water, Parker and Jill learn from Raymond, one of Parker’s former trainees and an FBC agent, that Jessica is actually working for the FBC and aims to sabotage the mission by triggering the ship’s self-destruct mechanism and fleeing. As the Queen Zenobia collapses, Chris and Jill help a wounded Parker escape, but he ends up in a predicament similar to Ada Wong’s in Resident Evil 2.

Chris attempts to rescue Parker by lifting him to safety but falls short, leading Parker to take the final leap. He expresses gratitude towards Jill for the enjoyable moments they shared and releases his grip, seemingly joining the list of victims from the Queen Zenobia. However, against all odds, Parker endures and moves to Malta. It’s later discovered that Raymond feigned his death and rescued Parker from the shipwreck. In a scene after the credits roll, as Raymond hands over a vial labeled T-Abyss to Jessica in a café, she inquires about why he saved Parker. He responds cryptically, “I have my reasons.” The theory is that Raymond acted selflessly to repay a debt they owed each other during their time at the FBC (Future Biotech Corporation).

1 Ethan Winters’ Encounter With The Baker Family (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)

Ethan Died Prematurely At The Hands Of Jack Baker

Times Resident Evil Characters Narrowly Avoided Death

Throughout the games Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village, Ethan Winters encounters numerous life-threatening situations. Instead of being pounded by Jack Baker or slashed by Lady Dimitrescu, it seems like Ethan should have lost more lives than any normal person. Remarkably, he manages to survive each time. Initially, this was believed to be mere coincidence. However, the developers at Capcom later introduced a plot twist (retcon) into Ethan’s storyline, stating that Jack Baker killed Ethan and Mia at the Baker family estate in Resident Evil 7, but his bond with the Mold allowed him to come back to life, similar to how Wesker did in the original Resident Evil.

Essentially, Ethan meets a tragic end at the hands of Jack Baker in Louisiana, only to be miraculously revived by the Mold. This is why he seems invincible, absorbing tremendous damage without succumbing to death, even managing to outlive all of Mother Miranda’s lieutenants before confronting the main antagonist. If not for the Mold, Ethan would have perished at the hands of Jack Baker. It’s quite fortunate that he was infected, leading to the events depicted in The Village. However, Ethan ultimately meets his final demise (for real this time) in Resident Evil Village, passing on his powers to his daughter, Rosemary, who shares a unique bond with the Mold as well.
