Within the past month, the much-anticipated Titan Quest 2 debuted in early access on PC, and as per THQ Nordic, it managed to sell an impressive 300,000 copies during its first three days. Following this announcement, Richard Browne – a former THQ vice president of studio operations – revealed several factors that prevented Titan Quest 2 from being launched nearly two decades ago.
Through LinkedIn, as reported by Game World Observer, Browne stated that in 2006, THQ had given approval for a sequel. Unfortunately, the development team at Iron Lore Entertainment faced rejection from THQ’s marketing department when they submitted their proof-of-concept demo.
According to Browne, [Titan Quest] was a game that continually gained popularity, yet unfortunately, our marketing team failed to recognize its potential. They rejected a superior Xbox 360 demo featuring a lower camera angle and improved controls, citing ‘Emsense’ as evidence that the demo (representing three months of work) didn’t strike a chord with the audience.
EmSense employed sensors to gauge players’ responses to a specific product by tracking heart rate, breathing patterns, and other relevant factors. Since Titan Quest 2 didn’t garner positive feedback via these measurements, this data served as one reason for postponing the project’s development.
Additionally, Brown noted that there was a lack of enthusiasm within the marketing team towards collaborating with the main game designer, Brian Sullivan. They perceived him as less suited for public relations, or in other words, not particularly adept at communicating effectively with the media.
As I reflect back, Brian was an ace, no doubt about it. He had this unique style – always donning khaki shorts, black socks, and loafers – which, let me tell you, added a bit of challenge to our team dynamic.
The development of Titan Quest 2 was taken over by Grimlore Games, under the auspices of THQ Nordic. Initially, the sequel is exclusively available for PC during its early access phase. However, it’s planned to be launched on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in the future as well.
