Grimlore Games, the developer of Titan Quest 2, is working on a system to prevent players from defeating bosses too quickly during early access. They plan to use scaling technology to ensure challenging encounters as players explore ancient Greece and battle mythological creatures.
As a gamer who loves action RPGs, I’ve definitely used the ‘glass cannon’ strategy – basically, stacking tons of damage and ignoring defense. The idea is to burst down bosses so quickly you skip all their complicated attacks. But I heard that might not work as well in Titan Quest 2, and they’re making it harder to just one-shot everything.
Titan Quest 2 Leans Into Scaling to Stop Players Instantly Killing Bosses
In an interview with YouTuber Darth Microtransaction, Titan Quest II’s Lead Systems Designer, Balint Marczin, explained that the team plans to address players quickly defeating bosses by using a system called “scaling.”
Currently, this isn’t implemented, but the goal is for the boss fight to last around a minute. Highly skilled players who focus on dealing damage quickly – even if it means taking more damage themselves – might be able to finish it in about 40 seconds. The important thing is that players will get to experience everything the boss has to offer, including all of its phases and abilities, he explained.
We need to make sure the game’s difficulty scales appropriately with the boss’s strength. Your character’s damage shouldn’t be so high that it overwhelms the boss; if it is, either you’re too powerful for this part of the game, or we’ve made a mistake in balancing things.
Grimlore Games wants the bosses in Titan Quest II to be genuinely challenging as players advance, but they’re also giving players freedom in how and when they choose to fight them.
Battles can take up to a minute or ninety seconds, especially against tougher enemies. It’s a constant cycle of dodging enemy attacks, avoiding hazards they create across the battlefield, and squeezing in damage whenever you have a safe opening. You’ll be moving around a lot, and sometimes you’ll need to prioritize defense by equipping stronger armor and resistances.
We want the game to be challenging without being overly frustrating, which is a tough balance to strike. Luckily, being an open-world game allows players flexibility. If a challenge is too difficult, you can gain levels elsewhere and return later when you’re stronger, or even temporarily lower the enemy’s level using special rituals. Your character’s stats will help you succeed in those situations. Conversely, if you’re finding things too easy, you can take on enemies below your level and quickly defeat the boss by becoming overleveled.
Titan Quest II aims to be a classic action RPG, avoiding the ongoing content updates common in many modern games. However, the developers aren’t simply recreating the past – they’re also updating the game’s systems to appeal to today’s players while still satisfying longtime fans.
You can also notice this with new features like dodging and the simple ability to change your character’s build.
Titan Quest II recently added a new class called the Forge mastery, which lets players upgrade their weapons and armor during combat and use deployable gadgets to defeat enemies. While a feature to adjust the game’s difficulty (scaling) is still planned for a future update, the Forge mastery is available now.
Titan Quest II will stay in early access for the foreseeable future, according to its Steam page, but Grimlore Games is currently aiming to fully release the game in 2026.
