In the world of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, a series of side-quests, known as “The Butterfly Collector”, unfolds. Initially appearing to be an innocent children’s game, it soon reveals itself as a vast city-wide conspiracy that Naoe and Yasuke are tasked with stopping. These quests take place in the setting of Izumi Settsu. In this guide, we’ll help you locate each quest and provide instructions on how to complete them all within “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”.
How to Start The Butterfly Collector in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Head to Katano:
The Butterfly Collector’s Journey” initiates in the town of Katano, positioned west of Katano Castle, within the district of Izumi Settsu. The character essential to this storyline, a youthful woman later identified as the Gamemaker, can be found close by the Ornament Vendor near the castle. This woman offers the quest without any prior requirements. You’re able to interact with her and embark on the quest at any stage of your gameplay.
Initially, the adventure starts off as a straightforward search for ten Origami Butterflies in the western part of Osaka. Upon completion of this initial mission, you’ll find that the gameplay expands significantly, introducing a “Butterfly Collector” wheel to your Objectives panel.
Where to Find All 10 Origami Butterflies – Assassin’s Creed Shadows
As a keen investigator, you’re free to gather the clues about the enigma unfolding in Western Osaka in whatever sequence suits you best. Rest assured, each clue will guide you towards unraveling the bigger conspiracy that lies beneath, piece by intriguing piece.
Origami Butterfly 1:
The very first Origami Butterfly can be spotted in the northeastern part of the Osaka Temple’s grounds, specifically attached to a grand tree, just like its counterparts.
Origmai Butterfly 2:
The second Origami Butterfly can be found in a petite, enclosed courtyard situated diagonally opposite the southwestern edge of Osaka Temple’s grounds. To locate it, search for a Torii gate that opens into a compact, fenced garden with two trees positioned at the back corner. The butterfly is attached to the right-hand tree.
Origami Butterfly 3:
The Origami Butterfly number three can be found along the southern coastline of western Osaka Island. Follow the shoreline eastwards until you reach almost the round, southeastern tip of the island, and there, nestled between two structures, you will discover the butterfly perched on a tree.
Origami Butterfly 4:
The fourth origami butterfly can be found on the eastern coast of western Osaka island. By drawing a straight line eastward from the Osaka Temple, you’ll eventually come across a tree nestled among tall weeds on the riverbank. This particular butterfly carries a hidden message known as the “Origami Letter From Shucho,” which indicates that a child has managed to escape after being kidnapped. For now, keep searching for more of these origami butterflies.
Origami Butterfly 5:
The fifth folded Butterfly is located on the east bank of a river, specifically in the courtyard of a house situated in the initial square district on the eastern side of the waterway. To reach it, you might need to hop over the fence into the backyard, but careful observation will guide you straight to your target. Importantly, this Butterfly holds no message.
Origami Butterfly 6:
The sixth origami butterfly you’re looking for is situated westward, moving towards the river. Along your path, you’ll find a tree standing tall in the grass on the north side of the central bridge. The butterfly, bearing a secret origami letter from Richo, can be found pinned high up on that tree trunk.
Origami Butterfly 7:
The seventh origami butterfly has returned, located on the opposite side of the river from where the sixth one was found. It’s now fastened to a tree that stands in front of a structure situated to the north of the Gear Vendor. Unlike its predecessor, there is no accompanying note with this seventh butterfly.
Origami Butterfly 8:
To locate Origami Butterfly 8, follow a southwesterly course from Butterfly 7 until you reach the water’s edge. There, you’ll discover a butterfly perched on a tree concealed among some shrubbery. Important note: Butterfly 8 holds a hidden origami message from Mucho – the Secret Origami Message.
Origami Butterfly 9:
The ninth origami butterfly has been positioned at the southwestern tip of the western part of Osaka Island, specifically facing the smaller western island across the strait where Kata poi is located. Interestingly, there’s no message accompanying butterfly number nine.
Origami Butterfly 10:
We discovered the last Origami Butterfly perched at the very edge, the easternmost point in our neighborhood, right across Western Osaka Island, divided by a river. No message was left accompanying this final butterfly.
Targets Revealed & Return to Gamemaker:

Once you’ve gathered all ten Origami Butterflies, either Naoe or Yasuke will remark that it’s time to go back to the Creator to claim the reward. However, if you promptly return, you’ll notice that the Creator is no longer there.
The discovery of the Origami Butterflies led to the unveiling of a child abduction network. Each butterfly you discovered, in fact, pointed towards a new target for either Naoe or Yasuke to eliminate, which will lead you to the next stage of the quest.
All Butterfly Collector Targets in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
In “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” there are a total of four targets associated with the Butterfly Collective. To start working on eliminating these targets, simply navigate to the Butterfly Collector section on your Objectives board.
Shucho – One That Got Away:

The initial goal is “Shucho”, and a minor sub-mission linked to them is titled “One That Went Astray“. You’ll locate the wandered child in a stable situated at the southwestern tip of western Osaka island. Engage with the child and help guide them home.
Keep a close eye on them while they flee, for they’re likely to bypass Shucho. As you trail the child, you’ll eventually spot Shucho. If you move swiftly, you can catch up to her and execute a deadly strike. That will eliminate Shucho. She offers these rewards in return:
- Ink Spiller Uncommon Tanto
- Mastery Point x1
- 285 Mon
- 2000 XP
Mucho – Find the Child:

Currently, someone named Mucho is attempting to kidnap a child, and you need to intervene immediately. You can locate her near the bridge connecting the northwestern tip of Western Osaka Island with the northern peninsula beyond it.
First, eliminate Mucho, then verify the child’s safety to advance a side-quest titled “For the Sake of Sake“. Following this conversation with the child, accompany him to his father. Naoe will share her discovered plan, which was obtained from one of the butterflies. This action completes “Home and Dry,” thereby unlocking the “Paper Trail” quest. Your actions against Mucho will yield these rewards:
- Hidden Pleat Rare Tanto
- Mastery Point x1
- 230 Mon
- 2000 XP
Richo – All Will be Well:

To find Richo, follow this two-part mission:
Firstly, decipher the clue hidden in one of the butterflies’ messages. The well is situated at the northern tip of the western Osaka island, surrounded by a vast collection of ruins on the western side. Uncovering this well will mark the end of the “All Will be Well” quest.
Secondly, eavesdrop on a gardener nearby the well who mentions that an enigmatic woman has been frequently visiting a bamboo forest. This revelation will set you on your second task.

In the bamboo forest lying north of Osaka and northeast of Noda Village, you’ll find Richo residing. She can be spotted outside a secluded cabin hidden within the thicket of bamboo. Proceed cautiously to sneak up behind her for an assassination. Upon her demise, enter the cabin and engage in conversation with the child inside. Accompany the child to locate her mother to complete this part of the quest. As reward for aiding the child, you’ll receive a special trinket or amulet meant for Naoe and Yasuke.
- The Dog-Ear Uncommon Tanto
- Trinket/Amulet of Childlike Bravery – reward from child.
- Mastery Point x1
- 290 Mon
- 2000 XP
Kacho – Butterfly Collector Leader:

Once you’ve accomplished your earlier tasks, there are still two smaller missions remaining for you to find Kacho’s whereabouts. These tasks are known as “The Paper Trial” and “Chrysalis.
1st task leads you to a stationer named North Temple of Osaka. The second task sends you to an unoccupied warehouse where clues about Kacho’s location are hidden. Upon deciphering the letters, you’ll find that she resides in Nishinomaru Garden, located west of Osaka Castle. Remember, this area is off-limits, so tread carefully on your way there.
Approaching Kacho will trigger a cutscene, followed by a brief battle. Though she appears defeated, she’ll share intriguing details before you can interact further. After the fight concludes, make sure to return to the Gamemaker.
Should You Spare or Kill the Gamemaker in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Upon revisiting the Gamemaker, you’ll engage in a quick dialogue where it comes to light that she herself was wronged by Kacho, yet she also offered aid. A crucial decision awaits: do you choose forgiveness or retribution (killing her).
From a standpoint of what you’ll gain, it’s definitely wise to show mercy towards her. There’s another Trinket/Amulet up for grabs with an intriguing engraving (we haven’t quite deciphered its meaning yet). Killing the Game Master won’t earn you any extra perks; there are no additional benefits in choosing that path. If you choose to show mercy, these will be your rewards:
This version maintains the original meaning while making it easier for readers to understand and follow the reasoning behind the suggestion.
- Butterfly of Benevolence Rare Trinket/Amulet (only if spare, the rest are earned either way)
- Ebisu’s Gamble Rare Bow
- 225 Mon
- 5000 XP
