Adventuring through the expansive realm of anime genres, I’ve discovered that To Your Eternity is a unique fusion of drama and fantasy. This captivating series will tug at your heartstrings like no other anime you’ve encountered. It masterfully weaves intense conflicts, profound friendships, and, unavoidably, numerous tear-jerking farewells.
In contrast to many other anime series, To Your Eternity stands out with its rich depth that frequently goes unacknowledged in conversations. The narrative centers around a unique character named Fushi, an immortal entity born from The Beholder, who was dispatched to Earth with the mission to safeguard and conserve the planet.
Life inevitably brings conclusions, with the exception of those who are immortal. Let us examine some of the most poignant deaths that significantly shaped Fushi’s path.
6. Parona
Older Sister of March
In the struggle to free Pioran on Jananda Island, Fushi was unexpectedly struck by memories of Parona. At that instant, he transformed into her likeness, feeling the sad weight in his heart as he came to understand she had perished. Engaging in battle while embodying Parona, Fushi emerged victorious, yet the knowledge of her demise left him desolate with grief. Following the conflict, he withdrew, immersed in sorrow for the passing of someone he held in high esteem and affection.
In due course, Fushi ran into Hayase, the one who brought about Parona’s end. During their tense exchange, Hayase disclosed how she managed to survive past skirmishes and goaded Fushi by claiming that Parona’s form was a “present” she had given him. She conceded that Parona fought valiantly but ultimately succumbed when Hayase cruelly sliced her throat open.
Fans found Parona’s demise to be sudden and inadequately developed, leaving them wishing for a more comprehensive portrayal of her last moments. The absence of a substantial backstory about how she was taken captive and killed made her passing seem less poignant, as it happened much too swiftly for a character with such significance.
5. Tonari
The Girl Who Lives on Jananda
At first, Tonari was introduced as a 14-year-old girl who trapped Fushi and Pioran on a ship bound for the notorious island prison of Jananda, accompanied by her group of friends. Initially depicted in a negative light, Tonari’s true personality eventually surfaced. She ultimately assisted Fushi in his escape from the prison, and their shared ordeals led them to form a strong friendship.
After many years had passed, Tonari resurfaced as a grown adult and encountered Fushi once more following a gap of four decades. Notably, her resistance to poison came in handy during the incident where Hisame poisoned everyone, leaving them all unconscious – Tonari was the exception.
Eager to safeguard those she held dear, Tonari faced off against the Nokker embedded within Hisame’s arm – a being inherited from her own mother. Regrettably, the Nokker struck back, causing Tonari to fall severely ill.
Upon waking up, Fushi couldn’t place his childhood friend because she had presented herself as a village physician. With her frail condition, Tonari requested that Fushi display the acquaintances he had encountered and then subsequently parted ways on his adventure.
In response to her request, Fushi started morphing into the deceased individuals, yet he took a moment to speak about a boy and a girl, approximately 14 years old, who were still alive and with whom he had previously associated. This revelation brought happiness to Tonari, as it confirmed that Fushi had not forgotten her, even after four long decades.
In a state of tranquility, Tonari breathed her last. Following her demise, Fushi momentarily assumed her likeness, perusing her diary to expose the secrets hidden within the village’s medical practitioners.
4. Pioran
Boozman’s Lover
In later months, Pioran served as a wise, elderly mentor to Fushi, instructing him in language, etiquette, and nuanced human relationships. A strong bond developed between them, but the lingering terror of Nokkers constantly threatened their tranquil island existence. Fushi feared losing yet another cherished companion.
On the island, Fushi underwent substantial personal growth, whereas Pioran’s condition deteriorated. Over time, she became more and more agitated, often forgetting incidents that had transpired just a few hours earlier.
With passing days, she became so engrossed in their circumstances that she seemingly lost grasp of reality as a whole. To Fushi, this scene was painfully reminiscent, observing someone dear to him gradually fade away. The Pioran he once adored and cherished seemed to vanish right before his very eyes.
As death approached, Pioran clearly expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards Fushi, joyful about their meeting. With tranquil determination, she pleaded to The Beholder for an end to her life and asked for a reincarnation that could serve Fushi again in the future.
3. March
The Girl Who Wanted To Be an Adult
In a small village called Ninannah, there lived a sprightly five-year-old girl named March who enjoyed pretending to be grown-up as she played with her sister Parona. However, fate took a cruel twist when March was selected as an offering for Oniguma, the gigantic bear revered by the villagers. As March was led towards her destiny, brave Parona interjected, risking her own safety to help March escape. In the ensuing commotion, March came across a boorish young boy whom she tenderly dubbed Fushi.
In the course of events, Fushi found himself under the nurturing guidance of March, who showed him how to eat and expressed gratitude by saying “Thank you.” Yet, this tranquility was short-lived as Hayase seized her once more, forcing her into a deep sleep in an attempt to avoid any further chaos.
As March opened her eyes, she discovered that she and her sister were staring at death itself. Then, in an unexpected twist, Fushi underwent a transformation into a wolf and overcame Oniguma, rescuing them from danger.
Despite their hardships not yet being fully resolved, Hayase apprehended all three individuals and confined them. However, with the aid of an elderly woman, they contrived a successful breakout.
Despite their brief freedom, Hayase and her guards quickly caught up with them. An arrow flew towards Parona, but instead of Parona getting hit, it was March who took the blow, heroically sacrificing herself to shield her sister. In the end, she breathed her last in a wagon.
2. The Nameless Boy
The Boy Who Wanted to Go to Paradise
Since the very first episode, it’s clear this anime isn’t for the weak-hearted. I found myself thrust into the story as a nameless boy, left behind in a frozen tundra village to look after my grandparents while everyone else embarked on a journey to find an island rumored to be paradise.
For more than five years, the boy experienced profound loneliness after his grandparents died, leaving just him and his faithful pet wolf, Joaan. Even though he felt the heavy weight of isolation, the boy made up his mind to venture alone towards a place called paradise.
Despite the unyielding rockiness underfoot, his relentless hope propelled him forward. However, a shattering despair overcame him upon finding the remnants of those villagers who had gone before him.
Overwhelmed with sorrow and dejection, the young lad retreated to his solitary dwelling. In the chair that was most comfortable for him, he drew his last breath, it appeared as if his spirit was finally reaching the heavenly peace he had yearned for so long.
1. Gugu
Big Brother
Initially, young Gugu resided in a tent alongside his elder sibling, Shin. Together, they worked diligently, aiming to one day afford a grand estate. Unfortunately, Shin betrayed their trust, pocketing all the money they had amassed and abandoning Gugu, leaving him devastated and alone.
One day, deeply saddened by the riverbank, Gugu observed a floating log about to collide with a girl he had feelings for. Without delay, he sprang into action, shoving the girl clear of danger but taking the impact on his own face instead. Later, Booze Man intervened, rescuing Gugu and providing him with a mask to conceal his scarred visage.
For the initial encounter, Gugu ran into Fushi at Booze Man’s refuge. Taking on a protective role, Gugu showed Fushi the ropes of daily tasks and emerged as both a mentor and a friend. Over the course of four years, they developed a bond similar to that of siblings, growing increasingly close like family members would.
Following a time jump, Gugu and Fushi showed up at Rean’s sixteenth birthday bash. It was here that Rean expressed her feelings for Gugu. However, just as things appeared to be going smoothly, a sudden Nokker assault disrupted the festivities, causing chaos. The two brothers courageously battled against the Nokkers, but unfortunately, during the battle, Gugu and Rean were buried under debris. In an ultimate display of love and valor, Gugu selflessly threw his body over Rean to shield her from harm, making the ultimate sacrifice for her protection.
Later on, Fushi came to understand that Gugu was no more, as he reflexively assumed Gugu’s shape – a bitter realization and confirmation of the loss of his dear friend.
