Toby Fox Comments on Deltarune Development Progress

So, Chapter 5 of Deltarune is still a ways off – Toby Fox just gave us an update saying it’ll be a few more months. It’s good to know things are actually moving forward, though! He wanted to let us all know how development is going and what to expect as it gets closer to being finished. It’s a bit of a wait, but at least we’re getting some info!

Following the huge success of Undertale, Deltarune tells a new story in a completely different world. The first chapter came out on PC in October 2018, with versions for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch arriving shortly after. Players who jumped in at the beginning had to wait nearly three years for Chapter 2, which launched in September 2021. The release of Deltarune Chapters 3 & 4 took even longer, finally appearing on all platforms in June 2025, coinciding with the release of the Nintendo Switch 2. With three more chapters still to come, future releases are expected to come much sooner, though the exact timing remains unknown.

Deltarune Chapter 5’s Progress is ‘Going Excellently’

The latest news about the release of Deltarune Chapter 5 came from Fox in mid-September, suggesting a launch sometime in the first half of 2026. A more recent update, shared in the game’s official winter 2025 newsletter, appears to confirm that timeline, and possibly even suggests it’s achievable. Fox explained that releasing the chapter will take “several months” from their current progress. While that’s a broad estimate, they’ve outlined the significant amount of work still needed before the next chapter is finished.

The project is coming along well! All the rooms for the next chapter are finished except for some minor background adjustments. The game’s scenes are also nearly complete, just needing a final polish. Only a few battles remain, and they’re fully playable from start to finish. However, some of the boss battles in Deltarune Chapter 5 need a bit more work on their bullet patterns and timing before they’re ready to be finalized.

The update shares that work on translating Chapter 5 is already happening. Once translation is finished, the chapter will move into professional testing. In January, the team will start making sure the game runs smoothly on all consoles. Because the first four chapters of Deltarune on Nintendo Switch 2 used a mouse mode, and this feature might be included in Chapter 5, ensuring a bug-free launch across all platforms could be tricky for the developer.

It’s hard to say exactly how long Chapter 5 will be, but the creator, Fox, says it will be packed with content! Chapters in Deltarune have gotten longer over time – finishing Chapter 4 takes about twice as long as finishing Chapter 1. Chapters 2 and 3 are somewhere in between those lengths, so many players are hoping Chapter 5 will offer a really extensive experience, potentially taking over 10 hours to fully complete.
