A fresh update has disclosed details about the progress of BioShock 4, simultaneously announcing that the planned remake of the original BioShock has been shelved. The first BioShock game is often hailed as one of the greatest video games ever produced, and while its sequels garnered a lot of praise, they didn’t quite match the original’s influence.
Regrettably, the BioShock series has not seen new content since its last installment, BioShock Infinite, was released in 2013. Its creator, Ken Levine, moved onto other ventures, and 2K Games essentially shelved the intellectual property beyond re-releasing a compilation of the original three games. This status quo has been disrupted with the formation of Cloud Chamber, a studio entrusted to produce BioShock 4.
BioShock Remake Has Reportedly Been Canceled
Based on Bloomberg’s report, the development of BioShock 4 seems to have encountered some difficulties. These issues apparently led to a review failure that sparked a management reshuffle at Cloud Chamber. Although much attention has been paid to the troubles in creating BioShock 4, the report also hinted at an upcoming BioShock remake being developed, but this project was unfortunately scrapped. With the reported challenges behind the scenes of BioShock 4 and the cancellation of an unannounced BioShock remake, it’s undeniably a tough day for fans of the series. Nevertheless, there remains a glimmer of optimism that the franchise can recover.
It appears that BioShock 4 might benefit from a bit more cooking time if it aspires to meet the high standards established by earlier games in the series. The difficulties encountered during the development of BioShock 4 are indeed worrying, but the recent management reshuffle and apparent commitment to creating an exceptional game rather than just a good one (as stated by 2K to Bloomberg) could eventually lead to a superior product. Though BioShock enthusiasts might be getting restless, at least 2K seems determined to make BioShock 4 as impressive as possible.
It’s unfortunate that the remake of the classic game, BioShock, has been scrapped, but it doesn’t mean we have to lose hope. Fans can still immerse themselves in an enhanced version of the original BioShock thanks to BioShock: The Collection. Plus, a BioShock movie is in production at Netflix, which could serve as a temporary fix until more games in the series are released.
Indeed, it’s been a while since BioShock enthusiasts have received significant new content, with the last major release being BioShock Infinite in 2013. It’s not surprising then that they might be feeling restless or even disappointed following the recent Bloomberg report.
