Toei Reveals Its Highest-Earning Franchises

Over a period of 9 Months

I happen to be observing a notable player within Japan’s animation scene – Toei Animation. This studio stands tall with its impressive portfolio, housing and animating some of the most monumental series in the entire industry’s history.

Recently, the top 4 best performing series, in different categories, were revealed.

Toei revealed sales in domestic licensing, overseas films, and overseas licensing.

Toei’s Biggest Franchise – Dragon Ball

As an avid fan, let me share my excitement: Dragon Ball has undeniably reigned supreme across all categories this round! Toei Animation’s earnings soared to an impressive 19 billion yen. The category that truly showcased its dominance was overseas licensing, where it took the top spot by a landslide! In the other two categories, it secured a well-deserved second place each time.

The Second Biggest Franchise For Toei – One Piece

In terms of popularity and success, One Piece ranks a close second to Dragon Ball in the vast Toei series. Across three different categories, One Piece came out on top twice, falling short only in overseas licensing. Given that One Piece is just beginning to gain traction internationally, it’s no surprise that its achievements can’t quite match those of Dragon Ball, which has had several decades to establish itself. With a sales figure of 18.4 billion yen, One Piece isn’t too far behind its rival.

The Third Biggest Franchise – Pretty Cure

Among all series, only One Piece and Dragon Ball appear to outshine the rest significantly. The magical girl series, Pretty Cure, manages to secure third position, boasting a total revenue of approximately 1.3 billion yen.

It appears that the show has difficulty securing international distribution, given its relatively low ranking in the foreign licensing chart.

The Fourth Franchise – Digimon

The Digimon series has consistently been well-liked, often drawing comparisons to the Pokemon series. The revenue generated from one specific area, namely overseas licensing, amounted to approximately 1.06 Billion Yen.

Other Series

Among various series, I’ve noticed that Slam Dunk, Gegege no Kitaro, and Saint Seiya have found their places within some top 4 lists. However, none of them can compare to the staggering viewership figures that One Piece and Dragon Ball continue to amass for Toei Animation.
