As a long-time movie enthusiast who has seen everything from critically acclaimed masterpieces to B-movies that should have been left buried, I must admit my surprise and delight at the resurgence of the Jack Reacher films on Netflix. Having grown up with Tom Cruise’s action flicks dominating the silver screen, it’s heartening to see these often overlooked gems find a new audience.
With whispers growing about action hero Tom Cruise possibly performing a daring stunt for the Paris Olympic Games’ grand finale, it turns out that two of his less-well-received action movies have recently appeared on streaming platforms, causing quite a sensation on Netflix.
Netflix continues to dominate the streaming industry, particularly known for its wealth of original content. Although the company is secretive about specific viewership statistics, it occasionally showcases popular hits and provides a daily top 10 list, giving us some insight into what’s currently popular. This list frequently showcases the platform’s heavily promoted high-profile originals, but the revival of lesser-known B-movies is quite fascinating. These films, often starring well-known actors and having previously underperformed at the box office, are experiencing a surprising renaissance on Netflix, reaching audiences far larger than they initially attracted. This pattern can be seen in two recent additions to Netflix featuring Tom Cruise.
Recently, two movies starring Tom Cruise have created quite a stir on Netflix – the Jack Reacher films, specifically Jack Reacher and its sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Interestingly, these action titles were directed by Christopher McQuarrie, known for his work on the Mission: Impossible series. These films made their way onto Netflix’s collection at the start of August, becoming available to the streaming giant’s subscribers. The reaction was swift, as both movies shot up Netflix’s movie rankings almost instantly. Despite ongoing discussions among fans of Lee Child’s bestselling novels about the accuracy of Cruise’s portrayal of the title character in the two Jack Reacher films, this hasn’t deterred a substantial number of viewers from tuning in. Now, eight years after the second movie’s initial release, it seems that both Jack Reacher films are experiencing a resurgence on Netflix and seem set to achieve even more success, making a strong debut for the franchise on the platform.
Starting August 5th, “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” claimed the number one position on Netflix’s daily Top 10 Movies list, and it has maintained this position since then. The original “Jack Reacher” movie, where Tom Cruise first played the title character, ranks fifth on the same list. Although both movies didn’t quite live up to Lee Child’s mercenary character fans’ expectations when they were initially released, their moderate financial success was due in part to Cruise’s global appeal. In the last two years, the highly-acclaimed “Reacher” series on Amazon Prime Video has been praised for addressing many of the original movies’ shortcomings, leading some to believe that interest in these films would decrease. However, this assumption has proven false as the films have experienced a resurgence on Netflix, much like other previously underestimated movies. While Cruise’s star power likely contributes to their renewed popularity, the success of Amazon Prime Video’s critically-acclaimed “Reacher” TV series may have rekindled interest in the original films. It remains unclear whether fans of the new series are curious about Cruise’s portrayal of the character, but it is clear that the films’ return to prominence is being well-received, regardless of the reasons behind it.
While Tom Cruise’s two Jack Reacher films are making waves on Netflix in the U.S., they haven’t had the same impact internationally. Despite significant viewership stateside, they’ve been overshadowed worldwide by SpongeBob SquarePants in an electric comeback in the eagerly anticipated spin-off, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, which pairs the beloved SpongeBob with Sandy Cheeks. This film has dominated the global Netflix chart since its release, particularly capturing the attention of younger viewers over the summer break. It appears that even for Cruise, some missions are just too difficult. If anything, the streaming triumphs of both SpongeBob’s latest adventure and Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher series on Netflix, much like Madame Web, reaffirm that a film doesn’t have to be critically acclaimed to achieve streaming success. It simply needs to be available to viewers on a service they already subscribe to.
