Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4 May Replace Director Jon Watts For 1 Reason

Highlights

  • Spider-Man 4 may have a new director due to Jon Watts’ busy schedule, as confirmed by Kevin Feige.
  • Watts is working on a Disney+ series and comedy film, making him unavailable for the next Spider-Man installment.
  • Rumors suggest Marvel and Sony disagree on the plot direction for Spider-Man 4, hinting at potential multiverse ties.

As a longtime fan of the Spider-Man franchise, I’m excited about the prospect of Tom Holland returning for another installment, but I can’t help feeling a twinge of disappointment upon hearing that Jon Watts might not be directing Spider-Man 4. Watts has been an integral part of the MCU Spider-Man films, bringing a unique energy and vision to the table. His departure leaves me wondering if the franchise will retain its distinctive feel without him.

The upcoming film “Spider-Man 4” by Tom Holland is expected to bring some alterations to the team. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige shared insights on why these backstage adjustments might be necessary.

Holland’s “Spider-Man” trilogy, also known as the “Home Trilogy,” gained rave reviews from both audiences and critics. Two movies, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and “No Way Home,” brought in over $1 billion at the box office, making them among the top 10 highest-grossing MCU films. With Jon Watts directing all Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man films, it seems logical that he would continue for the fourth one. However, Feige explained why a new director is likely to take over for “Spider-Man 4.”

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Feige shared that it’s expected that Spider-Man 4 will progress without Watts as the director due to his current workload. “We hold Jon in high regard,” Feige stated. “He created some of the finest Spider-Man movies for us. However, he has numerous projects underway now. So, we’ll most likely be searching for a new director since he’s occupied.”

Watts’ upcoming projects include Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, a Disney Plus series centered on four children who get lost in the galaxy and embark on an adventure home. Watts wrote all but the fifth and sixth episodes of the series with co-creator Christopher Ford, in addition to directing some of those entries. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is expected to be released in 2024, as will Watts’ upcoming feature film titled Wolfs. The latter is a comedy film starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt that follows two ‘lone wolf’ fixers who are forced to work together after being hired for the same job. The film is Watts’ first non-Marvel feature film since he directed Cop Car in 2015.

At present, Marvel Studios and Sony have kept quiet about who will direct the next installment of the “Spider-Man” series, which some sources call “Spider-Man 4.” Several names have been mentioned as potential candidates, including Drew Goddard and Justin Lin. The latest gossip suggests Sam Raimi is under consideration by Marvel Studios to helm the project. Given his past successes, Raimi’s involvement would be significant, as he previously directed the first three “Spider-Man” films featuring Tobey Maguire in the title role. However, it remains uncertain whether this rumor holds water or if Raimi is even considering rejoining the franchise with a new lead actor.

As an avid fan, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some exciting developments regarding “Spider-Man 4” at Comic-Con. With whispers of discord between Marvel Studios and Sony over the film’s plot, I eagerly await updates on their visions. While Marvel Studios is reportedly aiming for a gritty, street-level narrative, Sony apparently favors a multiverse storyline that could bring back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men. Hoping for some clarity on this anticipated project and more during the upcoming event!
