According to the studio head at Crystal Dynamics, you don’t need to play older Tomb Raider games before enjoying the new one, The Catalyst.
The Game Awards 2025 was great news for Tomb Raider fans, as two new games were announced! First, a remake of the original 1996 Tomb Raider is coming out to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary. Second, a completely new adventure will take Lara Croft to northern India. We’ve just gotten some fresh details about this new game.
Tomb Raider: Catalyst is the ‘Largest Game’ for the Franchise To Date
In a recent online question-and-answer session with GamesRadar+, Crystal Dynamics studio head Scot Amos shared more information about the upcoming game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst. Amos explained that the game takes place at the latest point in Lara Croft’s story – essentially, this is where she is currently, and everything before it is backstory. Despite being the furthest along in her adventures, Amos assured players that newcomers won’t need to have played previous Tomb Raider games to enjoy Catalyst.
Amos says Tomb Raider Catalyst is designed to be accessible for everyone, even those new to the series. You can start playing right away and enjoy the story without needing to have played previous games – there’s no need to ‘do your homework’ first. The game offers a complete and self-contained experience, allowing players to connect with the story and characters immediately, regardless of their familiarity with Lara Croft’s past adventures.
The studio head announced this is their biggest Tomb Raider game yet, and they’re thrilled to share it with players. The game boasts huge and diverse environments that are meant to be discovered.
Okay, so I just heard that one of the original creators of Tomb Raider actually likes where the series is going with new games instead of focusing on a remake – that’s interesting! And get this, Sigourney Weaver, the Alien star, is apparently being considered for a role in the upcoming Tomb Raider show on Prime Video! I’m super excited about that possibility. Also, people are talking about how ‘Tomb Raider: Catalyst’ doesn’t need a ton of pre-knowledge to enjoy, which sounds awesome. What do you all think about all this?
