Tomb Raider TV Series Has Cast Its Lara Croft

Amazon has chosen Sophie Turner to play the role of Lara Croft in its forthcoming Tomb Raider TV series. The actress known for Game of Thrones and X-Men will bring the character from Tomb Raider to life in the live-action television production, scheduled to start filming in January 2026.

There hasn’t been much good news about Amazon’s as-yet-unnamed Tomb Raider TV show since it was first announced two years ago. In March and April of this year, there were whispers that the Tomb Raider series might be doomed, but those rumors were dismissed in May. Since then, however, there haven’t been many new details revealed.

Sophie Turner Is Lara Croft in Amazon’s Tomb Raider

The series titled “Tomb Raider” now has both a production start date and a main actress, Sophie Turner, who will portray Lara Croft. This was confirmed by Variety, with reports of her involvement dating back to November 2024. Production is slated to begin on January 19, 2026, three years after the initial announcement of the show. Given the time it takes to produce shows like this, viewers might not get a glimpse until 2027 or later. However, having both a cast member and an established production schedule brings some much-needed clarity following years of speculation.

Turner becomes the third actress to portray Lara Croft in live-action films, taking over from Angelina Jolie’s portrayal in the 2001 movie “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and its sequel, “The Cradle of Life” (2003), as well as Alicia Vikander’s performance in the 2018 adaptation of the rebooted “Tomb Raider” video game by Crystal Dynamics. Turner expressed her excitement about playing Lara Croft, stating, “I am ecstatic to be given this opportunity! She’s an iconic character that means so much to many people – and I am giving my all. It’s a daunting task to follow in the footsteps of Angelina and Alicia, who delivered phenomenal performances, but with Phoebe as director, we are in capable hands. I can’t wait to share what we have prepared for you!

Despite featuring in more than two dozen productions over the past 15 years, Charlotte Turner’s breakthrough and best-known character remains Sansa Stark from the popular but controversial series “Game of Thrones.” Fans of Marvel might remember her as Jean Grey in “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” while she has also appeared in two music videos by the Jonas Brothers. Her roles include Heather in “Barely Lethal” and Margaret Ratliff in “The Staircase.

I’m absolutely ecstatic about taking on the role of Lara Croft! She’s a legendary character that holds immense significance for countless people, and I’m pouring every ounce of effort into this project. It’s a daunting task following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, who delivered incredible performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we’re in the best possible hands. I can hardly contain my excitement to share what we have been developing with you all!

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the star and writer of “Fleabag,” continues to lead as the creator of the series, but “Good Behavior” scribe Chad Hodge has joined her as a co-showrunner and executive producer. Additionally, director Jonathan van Tulleken from “Shogun” has come aboard as director and executive producer. Following a challenging production process, it appears that the “Tomb Raider” series is finally taking flight. Whether the show lives up to the anticipation remains to be seen.
